1.Lore: The Midoran Defence Force
Posted by Vaedryan on 2/25/2005 11:26:18 PM
Hey all :)

First off, a hearty "hello!" I just began playing a character on Vives, and wow... having a lot of fun just walking around the world... Great stuff!

I was hoping that some of you who have been around for a bit, might be able to give me a hand fleshing out some of the background for my character.

I'm playing a retired soldier of the Midoran army. He's been retired for a while now, and is not a big fan of the direction Vidus is taking Midor. ...

Thanks, DB! Great information. :)

So if my math is right, the standing army is 16,800 strong? (three divisions of 5400, plus one additional batallion)?
3.Coins Wanted! *a note posted on the Buckshire board*

*pinned low on the bulletin board at Buckshire Trading post is a note written in a hurried hand*

Coins wanted!

Hiya… if you need somebody ta carry things for ya or maybe go an’ fetch somethin’, I’m good at that. *added in the margin and underlined* and honest too!

You can find me in the basement of the stay-place not far from here – the one with the gnome fella who's name sounds like watcha say when you see somethin' bad - Ewie! Or ya can jus’ tell Dram ...

The Hin, Brymbilyn, blinked to clear the sleep from his eyes. He found himself atop a limb over-looking the Buckshire fairgrounds, a perch he had taken the night before, hoping to steal a view of the skybooms he had heard about. He slapped his knee, “Ingrown foot furs!” he cursed, “Missed ‘em again!”

He grabbed hold of the limb and swung to the ground. “Betcha they use magic dusts so I can’t peak without payin’” he grumbled as he made his way back toward the gnome’s stay-place, ...
5.Re: Rumours and Portents
Posted by Vaedryan on 1/27/2006 12:00:15 PM
An elderly, bearded man had taken up residence at the Broken Mask and seemed content to do nothing more than live out his days. He would have been beyond notice save for the invariability of his routine.

Each morning, he would arrive with a noticeable limp from his room and sit alone at a corner table. Each morning, he would order his bowl of gruel and an egg, boiled hard. And each morning he would slice the egg, mixing it with his gruel, and then eat without so much as a word to ...
6.Re: The Justification of Midor - Portents of an Execution
Posted by Vaedryan on 3/19/2005 4:20:32 PM
Edrik approached Midor from the north and stopped cold in his tracks as the city gates came into view.

More of them?

Edrik shook his head in horror and disbelief. Where there had stood four crosses there were now eight, and a fresh body had been nailed across each of those that had been newly raised.

Edrik’s strength seemed to ebb at the sight. He shifted his pack and struggled under its weight, still unaccustomed to the feel and heft of his armor after ...

I was pretty skeptical about how well this thing could work, so I did a quick (and definitely not entirely rigorous) test.

I went to entertainment weekly, and grabbed the pics of Reese Witherspoon and George Clooney from the Golden Globes. Then I uploaded those photos to see if the software could pick them correctly.

It blew it on Reese, picking: Virginia Mayo, Penelope Cruz, Hillary Swank, Deborah Kerr, Maria Callas, Christina Ricci, Mira Sorvino, Julia Roberts, Naomi ...
8.Dicebag craziness! :)
Posted by Vaedryan on 1/23/2006 10:19:07 AM
Tried to use the dicebag for the first time last night to make a persuade check (trying to convince that little fellow Nush to get out of the rain :P).

I originally went to the wrong category (the bucket that ends with perform), then went back and then tried the persuade check. Instead it gave me a string of di rolls (no particular check and I didn't look to see if the di was d6, d10, or what). But let's just say Bry would have been /really/ persuasive. :D

Just wanted to ...

*nod, nod* On that note... ;)

Is there any general policy or Vives ettiquette that relates to the dicebag?

I would probably pull it out from time to time for things like RP'd persuade, bluff, search, lore... Heck, actually I can see using it for many skills (eg: trying to imrpess somebody with a jump and roll from a table - tumble check to see if Bry splats or pulls it off :P).

I definitely try to keep the results on 'private' and just RP the consequences. The ...

Thanks for that, Barnas. :)

On the bluff/sense motive thing... What I'd likely do is just make a bluff check and just use that as a guide. If the roll seemed low-ish I'd shoot the other player a tell to let them know that their character could be pretty sure the little Hin is lying to them. That seems more equitable than just RP'ing a lie without giving the other character a chance to catch it. (plus, half the fun of RP'ing a lie is the getting caught part :P)

As an ...
11.Re: A Hin's Tale
Posted by Vaedryan on 1/23/2006 2:52:32 PM
The Stranger and the Coin

The Hin had not realized he had dropped the star fruit until he heard it strike the cobbles at his feet, his attention fixed instead on the unkempt, glaring figure pointing at him. He took a few stumbling steps back as the other men, equally covered in a layer of sweaty grime, stopped their whispering and looked toward him.

Then the Hin ran.

He ran for his life, and he ran to find help for the poor noble and his ...
12.A Hin's Tale
Posted by Vaedryan on 1/21/2006 9:56:34 PM
The Narrator Begins A Telling

Once, not so long ago, there lived a youthful Hin who ran errands all throughout Port Royale - sometimes delivering orders from the butcher out to estates, sometimes running nets to the docks, collecting tips to pay for his room at the inn, for which Margaret, the keeper of the inn, offered him a generous price. He was a likeable, wide-eyed Hin, as many Hin are – friendly, and most serious when it came to the pursuit of wonder.

Edrik raised an eyebrow as a well-groomed Salt took a seat across from him at their regular table. The change was so dramatic from the unshaven and surly breakfast partner he was used to that he could not help but bark a laugh.

“Salt!” Edrik said through his chuckle, “is there some lass in your life you have kept a secret of?”

“They’re expecting me bright and early at the Library, La Sapeinza,” Salt had said by way of explanation, and Edrik listened as his friend ...

I second Shanara's comments. The ranger event was great fun.SmileyWho knew purple badgers ran so fast!

And I noticed quite a few changes from the last time I poked my head in Vives as well. Wow. Lots to see! :D
15.Re: Setting out for the Depths of Lynaeum
Posted by Vaedryan on 3/15/2005 8:39:07 PM
Edrik woke and walked from his room in the Unicorn, heading for a warm bowl of oats in the common room, as is his habit in the morning. But on his way to the table that he frequents, he noticed Cletus' letter. He read it through, struggling at times to make out Cletus' meaning.

When finished, Edrik put his hand to the letter and smiled with some combination of relief and comraderie, muttering under his breath, "Cletus, old lad, it is good to see you recovered your health. I owe ...
16.Crafty kobolds must have seen us coming! ;)
Posted by Vaedryan on 3/15/2005 2:16:13 PM
Just wanted to give some kudos to the DM that brought in all the kobold reinforcements while we were trying (and failing) to clear their fort.

I'm not sure what all is involved in making those spawns happen, but I'm sure it can't be super quick or easy. And the DM did a great job of keeping it lively and very well-balanced. We got our arses kicked (a couple deaths and an organized retreat to the infirmary) - but I think we could have survived it and succeeded if we had been a bit ...

Nothing better than being surronded on all sides... .

That's what the staying together thing is all about.. a side a friend is on, is a side one of those nasty commando's can't be on. :)
18.A letter to the High Captain Summarizing the effort
Posted by Vaedryan on 3/15/2005 5:43:25 PM
*The following sheet of parchment - with a note on one side, and a rough sketch on the back - is handed to the Captain of the guard for delivery to the High Captain's office*

High Captain Johanas Uvanle –

Five set out from the Unicorn with the intention to put down the threat of the kobold’s. We reached the fortress without too great a distress, though the numbers of the little fiends seemed to have grown since my last visit.

However, once we had breached the ...
19.A Report on the kobolds and an offer of service
Posted by Vaedryan on 3/4/2005 3:16:46 PM
*After recovering in the infirmary, Edrik pens a letter detailing what he learned of the Kobold forces that build near the city of Midor. He hands the letter to the Captain of the Guard, for delivery through the ranks.*

High Captain Johanas Uvanle -

Exploring just beyond the borders of our Lord’s city, I came upon a caravan that had been raided and razed by a force of kobolds. Many of the fiends guarded the area loosely – by ones and twos, rather than in any organized ...

Posted by Vaedryan on 3/5/2005 5:04:44 PM
Edrik looks at Leon for a moment and then smiles in recognition. "Ahh... Leon, is it not. I did not see you sitting there, else I would have bought you an ale. Thank you again for your aid in my return to Midor," Edrik shakes his head and smiles wryly, "There was a day when I could have managed that trip on my own, but I would not have made the journey without your help."

"Can I assume that you have little or nothing to pay for my services," Edrik heard ...

Edrik looks up as the young woman speaks...

"I've been out there before. I know what awaits behind their walls, and I offer you my aid if you desire it," she says.

Edrik studies her appraisingly as he thinks.

She's young; perhaps too young for what we'll be seeing on our way.

His glance goes to the hilt of her blade, and to her hand, the back of which is dusted by metal shavings that shimmer under the candlelight.

But ...

Edrik raises an eyebrow at the discussion, and then nods to Cathryn, “And do not forget the scythe-toting warrior here. If she wields that blade as effortlessly as she seems to bear her armor, she’ll be written into kobold lore as the reaper that comes for them,” he says.

He then turns to address the man with the scar, “The venture is certainly not without risk, and as you have said, both you and I have evidence of that. But yet we sit here, when there are merchants and citizens ...

Edrik nods as Melinne suggests ranged weapons, "To keep their magics at bay. It would not serve us well to have us each stand dumb from the effects of that colored dust they toss about."

He turns to Salt, "And you can help with the traps?" Edrik glances down at his right calf briefly. "I still have a scar from the stinging water those threw up. Help with the traps would be very useful, indeed."

"Now as for getting past that infernally ...
24.Re: NPC Shops vs. PC Crafters
Posted by Vaedryan on 3/8/2005 10:07:36 AM
I haven't really travelled around enough to know what is selling in most stores, but Sirac's point above makes sense to me. The best crafters would likely be dedicated exclusively to their craft, and therefore most likely NPC's (be they elven, dwarven, fire giant (? wow) etc.)

And Edrik's interest in crafting isn't to become a merchant. Being retired, he would no longer have access to the regimental smith's that would have done repairs for him (and all the other soldiers) in the ...
25.Re: Smithing Knowledge Sought
Posted by Vaedryan on 3/6/2005 5:50:04 PM
Without word arriving from any smiths during his stay at the Unicorn, Edrik decides to make certain his notes are still in place.

When he reaches Buckshire, he notices his post is covered. He frowns, thinking that no one would have a chance to read his request, but then he reads the content of the poster that has covered it.

Hmmm... Port Royale, is it? Edrik nods to himself. And the lad is talented if he can do half of what he claims. I will pay him a ...
