Dicebag craziness! :) Posted: 23 Jan 2006 10:19 AM |
Tried to use the dicebag for the first time last night to make a persuade check (trying to convince that little fellow Nush to get out of the rain :P).
I originally went to the wrong category (the bucket that ends with perform), then went back and then tried the persuade check. Instead it gave me a string of di rolls (no particular check and I didn't look to see if the di was d6, d10, or what). But let's just say Bry would have been /really/ persuasive. :D
Just wanted to give a heads up. I'm not sure if it the di rolled that way because I back-tracked first. But I tried closing out of the bag and trying again, and it seemed that all of the links were tied to incorrect rolls. |

Yeah, that has always been a bug with with the dice bag. I did it by mistake once (when my rolls were on local) and I got a nice tell from another player (not from here):

*nod, nod* On that note... ;)
Is there any general policy or Vives ettiquette that relates to the dicebag?
I would probably pull it out from time to time for things like RP'd persuade, bluff, search, lore... Heck, actually I can see using it for many skills (eg: trying to imrpess somebody with a jump and roll from a table - tumble check to see if Bry splats or pulls it off :P).
I definitely try to keep the results on 'private' and just RP the consequences. The only exception would be if it were a result another player needed to see as well (maybe a bluff check because my character was lying about something to their character).
But I also have heard that those rolls can spam the DM channel. Any guidelines on when to use the bag and when to just wing it? |

For the most part, we take it as a personal playstyle thing. Some people like to use dice rolls to highlight that their character has skill in an area, or for an indication of how "lucky" they were if they're doing something they're not skilled at. Others don't use it at all.
Bearing in mind, however, the obvious fact that skills like sense motive arn't in NWN at all, so it's neither fair nor encouraged to try and force rolls on people to provide resolution to any situation, conflict, encounter, or anything else involving other PCs. It can be a useful guide, but not much more.
And please do bear in mind that the DMs see all your rolls, even the private ones. We're pretty well spammed with languages anyway, but just bear in mind that we see if before rolling 10 dice in quick succession. And, for the most part, if you're interacting with a DM, if they want a roll, they'll use their dicebag to make you roll it- don't do it on your own.
Exceptions probably exist to all of that, common sense is most important. Have fun playing around with the dicebags... ~.^

Thanks for that, Barnas. :)
On the bluff/sense motive thing... What I'd likely do is just make a bluff check and just use that as a guide. If the roll seemed low-ish I'd shoot the other player a tell to let them know that their character could be pretty sure the little Hin is lying to them. That seems more equitable than just RP'ing a lie without giving the other character a chance to catch it. (plus, half the fun of RP'ing a lie is the getting caught part :P)
As an alternative to the dicebag though, would the " `d20 " command be a better option when nobody else needs to see the roll (DM or player)?
EDIT: Oh... and that's the last question from me on this... Promise! *crosses fingers, just in case* |

That works too.
What I usually do is do a local roll and just let the player decide how to go from there. Some people will choose to believe it, choose to not believe it or just ignore it all together. Sometimes, people might even ask for a bluff check. |

Just keep a bag of real dice for personal rolling (And a clear space on your desk!) |

I personally dislike making any use of the Dice bag widget, I prefer to accomplish everything with the Spoken Emotes.
You can activate the specific dice bag functions by naming them, in emotes, with capital letters, if you have the emotes enabled (which they are, by default)
You may have to switch your broadcast to local, if you want your opponent to see them... but... meh
Using them this way is WAY faster than searching through this silly menus.

Which is fine, Veran, until you get that method abused.
For example:
*walks up to (player) and shoves him/her into the harbour*
In cases like that I would prefer to see DEX and STR rolls made by aggressor and victim |

No no, you mis understand... I was talking about rolls.. *points at the capitalized words in his emotes*
They are triggers, and the Voices listen for them, and roll the dice for you, broadcasting them if need be, I did the whole "Play chess and Arm Wrestle" at the Asashi Market day this way, it works like a charm.... of course, since I didn't want to say *uses his Strength to beat his oponnent* everytime we made a roll, which was like, 10 times per match... well, I just said /dm *Strength* in the DM channel, which the Voice can hear too...and then show everyone "STRENGTH CHECK: 10+ 12 = 22" etc.
It's part of the whole Language/familiar speak/emote animation system from the DMFI commands. I wasn't talking about pure freelance *beats his check without rolls and rps doing whatever the hell he feels like doing cause he's a bastard abuser*
If you look at my 3 examples, all three of them have a capitalized letter, and all three of them would have gotten ability/skill checks, USING the ranks of the character who used the emote. If your checks are set to local broadcast, then even emoting them will trigger the roll for everyone to see.
YOU might have specifically noticed this system when RPing with say, Willom Wilde, who has the word *Will* in his name... so any sort of emotes that you make like "*sneaks up behind Willom*" would have caused you to throw a will check, upon which, you might have been confused. |
