Lore: The Midoran Defence Force 2/25/2005 11:26:18 PM (Total replies: 2)
Hey all :) First off, a hearty "hello!" I just began playing a character on Vives, and wow... having a lot of fun just walking around the world... Great stuff! I was hoping that some of you who have been around for a bit, might be able to give me a hand fleshing out some of the background for my character. I'm playing a retired soldier of the Midoran army. He's been retired for a while now, and is not a big fan of the direction Vidus is taking Midor. He and "the boys" (other retired ...

Thanks, DB! Great information. :) So if my math is right, the standing army is 16,800 strong? (three divisions of 5400, plus one additional batallion)?

Coins Wanted! *a note posted on the Buckshire board* 1/29/2006 11:59:06 AM (Total replies: 1)
*pinned low on the bulletin board at Buckshire Trading post is a note written in a hurried hand* Coins wanted! Hiya… if you need somebody ta carry things for ya or maybe go an’ fetch somethin’, I’m good at that. *added in the margin and underlined* and honest too! You can find me in the basement of the stay-place not far from here – the one with the gnome fella who's name sounds like watcha say when you see somethin' bad - Ewie! Or ya can jus’ tell Dram inside the sell-place. I talk ...

The Hin, Brymbilyn, blinked to clear the sleep from his eyes. He found himself atop a limb over-looking the Buckshire fairgrounds, a perch he had taken the night before, hoping to steal a view of the skybooms he had heard about. He slapped his knee, “Ingrown foot furs!” he cursed, “Missed ‘em again!” He grabbed hold of the limb and swung to the ground. “Betcha they use magic dusts so I can’t peak without payin’” he grumbled as he made his way back toward the gnome’s stay-place, hoping a few ...

An elderly, bearded man had taken up residence at the Broken Mask and seemed content to do nothing more than live out his days. He would have been beyond notice save for the invariability of his routine. Each morning, he would arrive with a noticeable limp from his room and sit alone at a corner table. Each morning, he would order his bowl of gruel and an egg, boiled hard. And each morning he would slice the egg, mixing it with his gruel, and then eat without so much as a word to another – ...

Edrik approached Midor from the north and stopped cold in his tracks as the city gates came into view. More of them? Edrik shook his head in horror and disbelief. Where there had stood four crosses there were now eight, and a fresh body had been nailed across each of those that had been newly raised. Edrik’s strength seemed to ebb at the sight. He shifted his pack and struggled under its weight, still unaccustomed to the feel and heft of his armor after so many years. But he ...

I was pretty skeptical about how well this thing could work, so I did a quick (and definitely not entirely rigorous) test. I went to entertainment weekly, and grabbed the pics of Reese Witherspoon and George Clooney from the Golden Globes. Then I uploaded those photos to see if the software could pick them correctly. It blew it on Reese, picking: Virginia Mayo, Penelope Cruz, Hillary Swank, Deborah Kerr, Maria Callas, Christina Ricci, Mira Sorvino, Julia Roberts, Naomi Watts, and Romy ...

Dicebag craziness! :) 1/23/2006 10:19:07 AM (Total replies: 1)
Tried to use the dicebag for the first time last night to make a persuade check (trying to convince that little fellow Nush to get out of the rain :P). I originally went to the wrong category (the bucket that ends with perform), then went back and then tried the persuade check. Instead it gave me a string of di rolls (no particular check and I didn't look to see if the di was d6, d10, or what). But let's just say Bry would have been /really/ persuasive. :D Just wanted to give a heads up. ...

*nod, nod* On that note... ;) Is there any general policy or Vives ettiquette that relates to the dicebag? I would probably pull it out from time to time for things like RP'd persuade, bluff, search, lore... Heck, actually I can see using it for many skills (eg: trying to imrpess somebody with a jump and roll from a table - tumble check to see if Bry splats or pulls it off :P). I definitely try to keep the results on 'private' and just RP the consequences. The only exception would be ...

Thanks for that, Barnas. :) On the bluff/sense motive thing... What I'd likely do is just make a bluff check and just use that as a guide. If the roll seemed low-ish I'd shoot the other player a tell to let them know that their character could be pretty sure the little Hin is lying to them. That seems more equitable than just RP'ing a lie without giving the other character a chance to catch it. (plus, half the fun of RP'ing a lie is the getting caught part :P) As an alternative to the ...
