A Report on the kobolds and an offer of service
Posted: 04 Mar 2005 03:16 PM
*After recovering in the infirmary, Edrik pens a letter detailing what he learned of the Kobold forces that build near the city of Midor. He hands the letter to the Captain of the Guard, for delivery through the ranks.*

High Captain Johanas Uvanle -

Exploring just beyond the borders of our Lord’s city, I came upon a caravan that had been raided and razed by a force of kobolds. Many of the fiends guarded the area loosely – by ones and twos, rather than in any organized fashion – and I managed clear the area immediately surrounding the caravan of them.

However, following their trail, I came upon a much more organized resistance. It seems the barking lizards have fortified their position, taking cover behind walls of wood. Within these fortifications was a building with a door stout enough to resist the edge of my blade, and a bit further on, it seems they have raised a temple to some false and foul god. Perhaps more troublesome, they also seem to have some among their number that are very well-trained, with several stalking in the shadows, and others that seem to wield some form of the arcane.

In my attempt to withdraw and return to Midor with this news, I was struck down by a carefully laid ambush, and was fortunate to survive – having been left for dead, and then eventually discovered and carried to the infirmary by a passing patrol of Midoran regulars.

I understand your forces are spread thin during these times, but it seems that this is a threat we should not allow to gather in strength. If you cannot spare the men, I ask for your blessing in allowing me to gather a few others to chase these fiends from their position, and learn what we can of their intended purpose.

I have nothing to offer these volunteers, save the honor of service to Midoran and Midor, but that should be sufficient to gather the handful of stout lads the task requires. In my estimation, a single Heart, if well-disciplined in their approach, should suffice to crumble the threat before it can fully gather.

If such an action would not jeopardize any of your plans, or place our city at undo risk of a retalliatory action, you can send word to me at the Unicorn, and I will begin gathering the handful needed to carry out the strike.

I will await your permission before proceeding further.

Edrik Tate

Edrik looks at Leon for a moment and then smiles in recognition. "Ahh... Leon, is it not. I did not see you sitting there, else I would have bought you an ale. Thank you again for your aid in my return to Midor," Edrik shakes his head and smiles wryly, "There was a day when I could have managed that trip on my own, but I would not have made the journey without your help."

"Can I assume that you have little or nothing to pay for my services," Edrik heard Leon ask.

Edrik hesitates before answering, glancing instead at his half-eaten dinner. "That depends on where you place value, I suppose," Edrik says. "You are correct that I have no coin to offer, but you can take with you the knowledge that you have helped the city of Midor, and perhaps prevented its citizens from coming to harm. Aside from that, I am afraid I have little else to offer."

"But with your blade alongside," Edrik shakes his head and smiles broadly as he claps Leon on the shoulder, "those barking lizards would not stand long against us. I would be glad to have you join the effort."

In the corner, a young girl, not even eighteen yet, was sharpening her sword. She followed the conversation, her brown eyes shining in the candlelight. After some minutes, she walked up to the two men.

"I've been out there before. I know what awaits behind their walls, and I offer you my aid if you desire it"

She gave them an iressistably cute gaze from behind her long, red hair.

Edrik looks up as the young woman speaks...

"I've been out there before. I know what awaits behind their walls, and I offer you my aid if you desire it," she says.

Edrik studies her appraisingly as he thinks.

She's young; perhaps too young for what we'll be seeing on our way.

His glance goes to the hilt of her blade, and to her hand, the back of which is dusted by metal shavings that shimmer under the candlelight.

But she cares for her weapon like a veteran, as though she knows its maintenance may one day make the difference. She's young... but it seems she has seen much already; including what lay beyond the kobolds' walls.

"You've been behind their walls, have you?" Edrik nods. "Then pull up a seat, lass. It will be good to have you join us."

As he watches the girl pull a chair up to their table, Edrik vows to bring extra healing supplies along. I'll not have harm come to such a young one on my watch. I swear to Midoran, I won't.

Without overting his gaze from the fine form that had entered the conversation, Leon pronounced.
"Well old man, seldom do offers of assistance come so freely and so splendidly packaged"
And after gesturing for her to sit and join them at the table.
"I'm sure the Old man would be glad to have you along, girl."
Then turning back to the veteren as he rose from his chair.
"I, however, have paid work to see to this day. I wish you both the best of luck"

From one side of the room another woman can be seen, a large scyth like weapon can be seen at their shoulder. Flashes a grin as she listens to the conversations, setting down their ale and approaches the table.
"Looking for an extra arm or two huh? For a fare share I may be of service eh?" speaks with a grin, folding her armored arms infront of herself.

*Shilandra's nose pulls back from the shadows at the stairwell leading up to the rooms of the unicorn, her gaze watching as Leon exits. Cathryn emerges from her room and places a hand on Shila's large head whispering into her ear "Wait in the room, I will see if he still needs our help." Soft padding barely audible lead back into the room which Cathryn had just emerged. Continuing down the stairs she moves to where Leon had just left from*

"Edrik, *smiles gently* it is good to see you are doing well. I overheard your talk with Leon. It's unfortunate that some are interested in only business."

*glances back over her shoulder to the door*

"I would offer my hand to your aid though, with no payment required. The kobolds in the field have upset the balance of things. They need to be placed back into natures harmony. Now when will we be leaving?"

((were you hoping to have a set time to do this thing? Just let me know and i'll see what I can do. Starting a new trimester at school though, so time may be tight))

Bedtime story...
Posted: 06 Mar 2005 12:19 PM
*Sitting nearby, Salt sips from a clay bowl, a mixture of sour milk and spirits that helps him to sleep. A raven is perched on the back of his seat, black claws scratching and black eyes watching.*

He overhears talk of the kobolds and tuts to himself, kind but disapproving.

“No, no my friends, I would not go to that place,” he interjects. Bones creak as he leans forward, parting thin white hair at the back of his skull. “You see this scar?” A livid half-moon where a flap of skin once came up. “I went there, with a fierce warrior-woman named Melinne. Kobold came up, and smacked me from behind with a mace! Trephination was necessary, to relieve the pressure on my brains and put my skull-bones back together at the Midor infirmary.”

“No, I should not go back to that place. Let those kobolds be, lest they should… but, you already know this. You were sapped by one of those sneaky ones too, weren’t you?”

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about dying."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means lying in the ground with dirt on your face and holding your breath forever."

The young girl with the red hair looked up, revealing her face in the low light.

"A fierce warrior woman, is that how you'd describe me, Salt?"

Why there she is now!
Posted: 06 Mar 2005 12:57 PM
*Startled, and then struggling to focus on her face...*

"These peepers..." Setting down the posset pot, he follows, "It is you! Melinne, why-oh-why would you go back to that place. Haven't you had your fill of battle with kobolds? Nastly little things will swarm you if you aren't cautious. And I know for a fact that you are not cautious."

The raven perched on the back of Salt Sower's chair spreads its wings, flapping them to straighten out his feathers. He then continues to look at the room, first through one eye, then through the other.

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about dying."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means lying in the ground with dirt on your face and holding your breath forever."

May I interject?
Posted: 06 Mar 2005 01:23 PM
*glances between the two as they converse finally resting her gaze on Salt and his raven*

"If I may say though. You and the lady here went as two, no? As of now we have three, Master Edrik, the lady and myself. As I don't believe we've ever met you are basing your thoughts on the observation of the Lady's performance, and master Edriks tale, but you know little or nothing about myself I would presume."

*sits up straight in her chair so as to give more strength behind her words*

"I am quite confident that if prepared for the battle ahead the three of us would be able to do well enough against the kobolds. Even better if we could garner some more support. So long as a group will support one another and not flee or turn against one another there is strength in numbers.."

*leans back once more lowering a hand to the floor where a stray cat has come to rest by her feet. Smiling gently she rubs the small creatures soft fur and closes her eyes listening to its soft melodious purring.*

As a matter of fact, we were three.
Posted: 06 Mar 2005 01:56 PM
Salt considers as his eyes refocus. "As a matter of fact, we were three. Melinne and I were accompanied by a..." He continues in hushed tones "...by a sorceress."

"And you are correct, I know nothing of your capabilities. And, to be perfectly honest, my companions fared reasonably well and emerged without life-threatening injuries. It was only I who suffered so at the paws of those curious doglike things. And to think, just a month ago I listened to the song of a kobold named Bunt, by a fire in the halfling settlement called Brandibuck Vale."

Hand probing the old injury, Salt goes on. "That talented little fellow has nothing in common with the kobolds we encountered. My curiosity is sated. I only suggest that you consider carefully your reason for making this expedition. If you believe yourselves equal to the challenge and of adequate numbers for the task, then nothing should stand between the three of you and a measure of victory. And if there was some way that I could help...without directly entering into this battle, I would happily offer my services for your protection or in forecasting what lay in your path..."

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about dying."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means lying in the ground with dirt on your face and holding your breath forever."

Re: Enough tales of woe... We will succeed.

Edrik raises an eyebrow at the discussion, and then nods to Cathryn, “And do not forget the scythe-toting warrior here. If she wields that blade as effortlessly as she seems to bear her armor, she’ll be written into kobold lore as the reaper that comes for them,” he says.

He then turns to address the man with the scar, “The venture is certainly not without risk, and as you have said, both you and I have evidence of that. But yet we sit here, when there are merchants and citizens that weren’t so fortunate,” Edrik raps the table with his knuckles in resolve. “And I’ll not stand by while those barking lizards prey on the good folk of Midor.”

“You are free to choose your own path,” Edrik says, “but if you have nothing save tales of horror and woe, best that you take them elsewhere.” Edrik nods and his expression softens a bit. “But if you would help us take the fight back to them, then pull up a chair, we would welcome whatever aid you could offer, even if you do not make the journey alongside us.”

Edrik turns his attention back to the table and the three women gathered there and speaks with confidence, “We have the number. Together, with the proper preparation as Cathryn says, we will not fail.”

“Now,” Edrik says as he begins to arrange the plates and silverware into some semblance of the kobold fort as he remembers it, “let’s get down to the business of planning our approach. Lass,” he nods to the youngest of the group, “you said you had been there…”

Those gathered at the table discuss the details of the expedition, shuffling forks and potatoes as they create their map and plan for roles, supplies and the taking of defensible positions.

Bogie!
Posted: 07 Mar 2005 09:24 AM
“KAW!” sounds the raven in rather earsplitting tones. The great bird leaps onto Salt’s shoulder and lets a stream of white droppings down the back of his robe.

With the bird flapping at his head, Salt shouts “Enough, Bogie!” and seizes the bird firmly as one would take a rooster in hand. The raven calms. “He just figured out what we’re talking about, you see,” Salt says by way of explanation.

The old man seems to have a near-photographic memory, and contributes details as to the numbers and placement of kobold defenders. “There,” he indicates, somewhat drunk on posset. Taking a large green pea from a bowl of water resting on an adjacent table, he marks a location some distance from the gateway of the kobold fortification. “That is where I met mine.” His finger presses down gently upon the legume until it pops audibly, and Salt laughs and laughs...

“…I might have some help for you, in the way of avoiding the traps that these ankle-biters leave all around the place. They’re everywhere in there, you know.”

"What are you talking about?"

Edrik nods as Melinne suggests ranged weapons, "To keep their magics at bay. It would not serve us well to have us each stand dumb from the effects of that colored dust they toss about."

He turns to Salt, "And you can help with the traps?" Edrik glances down at his right calf briefly. "I still have a scar from the stinging water those threw up. Help with the traps would be very useful, indeed."

"Now as for getting past that infernally stout door..." The group continues to fine tune their plans, though now ravished after much discussion, pieces of map slowly dissappear into the mouths of the hungry adventurers.

"Traps?"
Posted: 11 Mar 2005 08:44 AM
Salt had fallen asleep with his eyes open. The raven called Bogie, free of his grasp, hopped away and flew into the beams supporting the Unicorn's second floor. Perched there he kept watch over his master with a black beady eye flecked with amber.

"...well, yes, I hope I can do some good in that department." He looks around suspiciously, leans in and continues confidentially, "I shall prepare a series of incantations, penned onto parchment and containing a spell that will make their nasty little contraptions glow with a crimson light. Some may even be neutralized, if the divination is strong enough. With others, it will simply be a matter of stepping around them."

*Cathryn suddenly glances to the east and closes her eyes briefly. After a few moments she slowly opens her eyes*

"Apologies Edrik, it would seem this adventure may not in fact be for me. There is something more pressing at hand for myself and Shilandra, however I wish you all the best of luck, and should things change I will make every attempt to return in time to aid you."

*having said that she stands gracefully gives a soft whistle and Shila (the black panther that often travels alongside of her) comes quietly stalking out from up the stairs that lead to the rooms. Kneeling down and whispering a few things into Shila's ear she then stands and regards the fellow adventurers.*

"May the mother see you all to safety and the completion of this task."

*She places a hand onto Shila's back and the duo walk swiftly from the inn. *

A letter to the High Captain Summarizing the effort
Posted: 15 Mar 2005 05:43 PM
*The following sheet of parchment - with a note on one side, and a rough sketch on the back - is handed to the Captain of the guard for delivery to the High Captain's office*

High Captain Johanas Uvanle –

Five set out from the Unicorn with the intention to put down the threat of the kobold’s. We reached the fortress without too great a distress, though the numbers of the little fiends seemed to have grown since my last visit.

However, once we had breached the walls, the fate of our group changed for the worse. One of our number fell just within the gates, for reasons we have yet to ascertain. Our best assumption is that he fell to the blades of one of the many stealthy kobolds that reside there.

As a few of us tended to our fallen comrade, others made their way deeper into the fortress and faced strong resistance. In the fighting that ensued, another of our number fell with grievous wounds from their blades and magics. Seeing the losses we had taken, and the strength of the force we faced, we gathered the bodies of the fallen and managed an organized retreat to the infirmary. Midoran be praised, the lives of both the noble-hearted souls were saved by the talents of Gias.

Turned back as we were, we sought to replenish and strengthen our number. Salt Sower proved invaluable in this effort, as he traveled to Paws and Brandibuck to find others willing to join our group. And then Midoran smiled on us as Tagius, a Knight of the Order, took up his sword and led us back to the walls of the barking lizards.

On this second effort, we met with far greater success. Under Tagius’ leadership we managed to drive the kobolds from their positions, routing them from the fortress. We drove them all the way to the foul temple they have built there. They made a concerted stand at the foot of this evil place, but ultimately fell before us.

I have provided a sketch of this temple’s design on the opposite face to this letter. I thought this structure may be of interest to the Church, and that perhaps this sketch may provide insight into which false god it has been raised to.

It is my hope, that through the strength and courage of those that ventured into that foul place, that the people of Midor may suffer less at the hands of the kobolds.

Yours in service to Midoran and Midor,
Edrik Tate
