FYI! Carfax alert! Posted: 08 Aug 2006 01:54 AM |
| I don't know when this will be fixed but tonight, (8-7-2006) the Shadows in Carfax manor are ignoring AC, doing strength drain on EVERY hit and are nigh impossible to hit. |

This has been an ongoing issue in Carfax Marlena
I think Henesua mentioned it before and I myself have experienced the outrageous misfortune the shadows of Carfax deliver upon leaving the area. It seems intentional with how devastating the attacks are.
But I think it's just the way Vives is |

It happens in Gorlath, too. Much more often in Gorlath, in fact, because the Shadows there are higher-leveled.
No one noticed Carfax before?

I thought the carfax shadows were bog standard.
Is it possible they start that way upon the module loading, but the ones that spawn in after they are killed might be beefed up a bit?
have noticed killing them easily in the past, when no one had been through, but having a harder time of it other times, when it was obvious others had been there already (empty chests and such) |

Luck of the rolls I guess. The respawned creature is identitical to the creature that was spawned in on initial module load.

Re: FYI! Carfax alert! Posted: 08 Aug 2006 10:59 AM |
| I was in another area when it happened last night and they called for help. When I arrived the shadows killed Marlena's character, and then they started attacking me, doing incredible damage per hit. I changed my weapon and then the game froze. I waited for a while for it to kick back in but it didn't, so I checked my other computer and saw that despite their bodies lying on the floor in my game Helena and Allan were no longer in Carfax. I logged off and logged back in with two shadows to kill. They were easily dispatched and they didn't hit me once when I returned. |

Re: FYI! Carfax alert! Posted: 08 Aug 2006 12:31 PM |
THat was because Mykal came in when I PMed the DM team to ask which DM thought it was suddenly necessary that Allan and I die and wanted to know why. I was all sorts of upset because the first time we went through there, the Shadows were nicely cooperative and fought fairly and died appropriately. The sudden constant criticals ignoring AC and the persistant STR drain was not the behavior they had exhibited the last time fighting them, so I thought that a DM had decided to try to teach us a lesson in not adventuring.
Please don't look at me that way; it's happened to me before. There are real and legitimate reasons I don't usually make characters that, as a basis of their personality, go out and hunt things.
Anyway, Mykal was gloriously god-like and took pity on the sobbing mortals, and let us redo while he checked for bugs. The Shadows continued to do very unfair things like ignore AC and not do any actual damage other than to beat down our STR stat, which is how it killed us. |

Re: FYI! Carfax alert! Posted: 08 Aug 2006 12:44 PM |
Very odd, because I was in Carfax last night too with a new character, and I had probably the smoothest sailing with the shadows I ever had...In fact, I don't recall them hitting me once, which I thought was highly peculiar at the time...(even with a fighter and a reasonably good AC, I can usually count on them hitting me once at least)
This is not in anyway to doubt what you said happened, Marlina...just another log to throw on the mysterious fire that is Carfax.....
Personally, I think Vives has in fact gained some sort of consciousness and autonomy...it's now doing whatever it wants, developers and programmers be damned...I know it controls most of my life....it's probabaly identified players who have PCS that are Naruthians, Vilvayians, Helkrissians, etc. and will start killing them first...no doubt PCs with paladins will be spared.... |

That's the way it seemed to me... first run through, they were not ignoring AC, and I got a save when they hit. But once they respawned, they were evil little demons of pain, and I went from 17 to 0 strength in about 6 sec.

Re: FYI! Carfax alert! Posted: 08 Aug 2006 01:06 PM |
| It happens on the respawn. Since the shadows are usually the first encounter when you enter you usually kill them once no problem then continue through Carfax. As you are leaving, if you left the door to the shadow room open, they will come charging out of the room and proceed to tear you to shreds. Like I said before, it seems really intentional, like you are being punished by a DM for looting Carfax, it's so direct and happens so quickly. |

I cannot get at the toolset at the moment to check.
For now..just be warned that carfax is dangerous, the more you aggravate the current residents.

First off, it means you're nutters! The human mind simply cannot handle the stress of playing those two characters.
Second, it clearly means that Cecil will choose you as the first to go....Sorry about that...have a nice day...good luck and all! ;) |

Re: FYI! Carfax alert! Posted: 08 Aug 2006 02:01 PM |
| The first time I encountered this was actually in Gorlath Keep quite some time ago.. Fighter type went from 21 strength to 0 in less than ten seconds.. Since then though I've never had it happen, but I've always treated the shadows alot more carefully. Not sure what causes it. |
