| 1. | The Annals of Mhoraethian, Part 1 Posted by Mhoraethian on 2/18/2004 2:52:57 PM It was a miserable day. Dark clouds swirled overhead as Pope the Bard looked out and surveyed the landscape outside the Four Winds. Inside the sounds of merrymaking went on, oblivious to the renewed rainfall. "Gods, it has been raining for days" thought Pope. "And why am I standing out here in the rain, when the fire is burning, and the Ale flows freely inside?" Some spark of intuition had prompted him to step outside, and he wondered at it as he scanned the distance, ... |
| 2. | The Annals of Mhoraethian, Part 2 Posted by Mhoraethian on 8/24/2005 4:08:40 PM First came a faint and murky sound. Slowly though, it became recognisable. Music, and voices raised in mirth. He opened is eyes, sitting up slowly. A room, an Inn... the Four Winds.. he recognised it. A staff leaned against the wall, he strode to it, taking it up reflexively, then looked at it. Questions.
The man closed his eyes, the fog in his mind slowly began to clear. Mhoraethian, that is I. How had he come to be here, and from whence? His memory gave no reply to his ... |
| 3. | Re: new ?, hostile NPC at very start Posted by Mhoraethian on 3/10/2004 2:35:15 PM I had something similar happen to me once; imagine my horror when my summoned spider started slaughtering the children playing in the fountain at Port Royale. Everything was back to normal after the next server reset. I just chalk it up to a bad nightmare. |
| 4. | Re: The XP Catch-22 Posted by Mhoraethian on 3/9/2004 11:51:55 AM I highly recommend going after DM event and RP XP. Not too long ago I had a "bad level" as you describe it, and that is how I was able to put it behind me (and I had a lot of fun in the process). If you are getting killed solo then dont solo.. it will only make the situation worse. Another thing you could try is crafting. I understand it gives XP, though i havent tried it yet (cant seem to find all the ingredients). |
| 5. | Re: Vives #1 problem Posted by Mhoraethian on 3/2/2004 11:51:58 AM I agree on both counts. Vives is a fabulous world, and the lag is the #1 problem here. If dropping CNR will get rid of the lag, then I am all for it, but as you say, we would need to find an equitable solution for the folks who have invested time in trade skills.
All I can say is that Vives would be a much better experience without the lag. |
| 6. | Re: Other options Posted by Mhoraethian on 3/3/2004 4:51:36 PM My experience is that around 15 +/- folks are in game I generally start getting the yo-yo effect in movement, which tends to get worse as more people come on line. This always seems to get worse when I enter combat. The result is I now only take on dangerous foes when there are few people on line. When the lag starts up but i still want a little action, my Wizard sticks to stuff he cant beat to death with his staff and stays away from party combat situations where things tend to get even ... |
| 7. | Re: Other options Posted by Mhoraethian on 3/3/2004 4:57:23 PM One more comment. While My last post is focused on how lag effects combat, it is equally a problem for role playing. Conversations are already less than real time, and with lag added, it gets very hard to have a conversation with 3 or more folks. Too often there is a long pause, followed by everyone saying somthing at the same time.
Anyway, I'm sure I'm just stating the obvious. While lag during role play is annoying. Lag during combat is far more frustrating. |
| 8. | Re: Immunity items: Out of control? Posted by Mhoraethian on 3/3/2004 12:17:32 PM While we are on the subject of loot drops...
My character has now found 5 +3 Scarabs of protection from random drops. It could just be random chance, but this particular item seems way too common to me. Mind you, I have not found any of +1 or +2 enchantment. Perhaps we can tone down the occurance of this item? |
| 9. | Re: Immunity items: Out of control? Posted by Mhoraethian on 3/3/2004 12:44:49 PM Was this recently that you found all three of these, or from a few weeks ago?
I think this question was directed at me? I found my 5th Scarab of Protection +3 last night. At least one other was in the last 2 weeks. I do believe that they were found in 5 different locations and that all were random drops. |
| 10. | Re: Immunity items: Out of control? Posted by Mhoraethian on 3/1/2004 8:10:17 PM I agree with the "Completely remove it or leave it be" sentiment. Otherwise you are putting late comers at a disadvantage. Its better to keep a level playing field for everyone. |
| 11. | Re: Immunity items: Out of control? Posted by Mhoraethian on 2/29/2004 12:50:47 AM I agree that the game is better without immunity or constant spell items. Not for the sake of PVP, but for the following reasons:
1. Constant spells in items make the actual spells less useful 2. Constant spells in items make the class that has the actual spell less useful 3. The item is overpowerd because the spell can be dispelled, while the item cannot
You promote party play by not allowing such items. The fighter is going to need a caster to buff him ... |
| 12. | Re: Lag Deaths Posted by Mhoraethian on 2/29/2004 8:23:40 PM I took a 1600 xp lag nap today as well. My solution is henceforth, Im going into dangerous situations only when there are few people on the server... those lag deaths are very frustrating. |
| 13. | Re: Lag Deaths Posted by Mhoraethian on 3/1/2004 8:02:17 PM In my exprerience, there is no lag if you log in in the off hours, when there are around 10 or less people on. When the server is fuller, you might want to stick to RP and less dangerous areas. Thats my new strategy anyway. |
| 14. | Re: Law, Chaos and Alignment Posted by Mhoraethian on 2/20/2004 4:12:13 PM I agree with your view of a typical Paladins self righteousness and short sightedness. But your description of them seems to point to an extreme LN alighnment as opposed to LG. The means being more important than the end, means strict adhereance to the law, regardless of the outcome.
In the face of an overwhealming imbalance such as the scenario I portrayed, where the Paladin does not have to harm one to save many (which I agree he would never do), but merely has to go against one of ... |
| 15. | Re: Law, Chaos and Alignment Posted by Mhoraethian on 2/20/2004 4:28:16 PM This has been an interesting thread.
My view of the D&D alignment system is, its a role playing aid, not the end all on how your character acts. You decide what the character will do, not his alignment. I don't like to play alignment restricted classes because I don't want to be bound to someones inerpritation of that alignment. Let your character grow through RP, not alignment interpretations. |
| 16. | Re: Law, Chaos and Alignment Posted by Mhoraethian on 2/25/2004 12:18:47 PM So, if a character is Lawful (behavior dictated by externally imposed rules), he follows an Ethically-based system of Good and Evil, but if he is Chaotic (behavior dictated by an internally devised set of rules) he follows a Morally-based one?
Actually, if you subscribe to Diomed's definitions of ethics and morals, its more likely to be the other way around (though this is not a 1 to 1 correlation). The lawful character is most often lawful beause he ... |
| 17. | Re: Law, Chaos and Alignment Posted by Mhoraethian on 2/19/2004 12:09:12 PM I think Lawful characters rely on what they feel is right as well. The difference is that Chaotic characters will do what their feelings dictate, while Lawful characters, if they feel strongly enough about it, will try to change the system. |
| 18. | Re: Law, Chaos and Alignment Posted by Mhoraethian on 2/20/2004 2:05:30 PM I can think up reasons why a Paladin might travel with an evil character...
A Paladin and a LE character make an uneasy alliance of sorts to battle what, in the eyes of the Paladin, is a much greater threat. This would only happen if the Paladin could come up with no alternative, and the LE character is willing (ie has too much at stake and finds himself at least temporarily, with similar goals as the Paladin).
Why only LE? The Paladin would only do this with someone ... |
| 19. | Re: Law, Chaos and Alignment Posted by Mhoraethian on 2/20/2004 2:46:06 PM By the rules you are correct, but IMO, its rigid thinking like that that can cause a Paladin to fall. I think there could be a credible argument made that a Paladin would lose his status if he didnt work with the LE character, if say, his failure to do so brought about terrible consequences, and his continuing to refuse continued to result in death and suffering to the innocent...
Somthing to think about. |
| 20. | Spellcasting XP and Wizard Vs Sorcerer Posted by Mhoraethian on 2/27/2004 3:38:48 PM My character recently acquired a large number of new spell scrolls, and this led to a realization that there is an inequality in XP awards between the Wizard and Sorcerer.
As one continues to use the same spell repeatedly over time, the XP award for the spell goes down to some minimum. Since Sorcerers only have a few spells, they will end up getting the minimum XP award on each and every one of their spells relatively quickly. The Wizard however, has lots of spells he can cast ... |
| 21. | Re: Spellcasting XP and Wizard Vs Sorcerer Posted by Mhoraethian on 2/27/2004 4:32:44 PM sorcs have a higher magic modifier and exploration mod i believe than a wizard has.
In that case, it sounds like this has already been considered. Guess I'm still getting up to speed on how well thought out things are here. |
| 22. | Re: Giving the DM's a break Posted by Mhoraethian on 2/25/2004 4:16:13 PM I agree, DM's should have fun too! Shouldn't problems with other players be dealt with in game anyway? (unless its extreme) I know Mhoraethian wouldnt hesitate to nail some sucker if it was truely warranted and in character for him to do so. He has already blacklisted a couple characters (meaning he will have nothing to do with them... nothing friendly anyway). DM's are there to add content and solve game engine mishaps, not deal with player interpersonal issues. |
| 23. | Re: Feedback from a Newbie Posted by Mhoraethian on 2/23/2004 7:03:30 PM Actually, I have found soloing with a low lv Wizard to be fairly easy (and in many ways safer than partying). It dosent take much to get any character to Lv 3, and then you have invisibility and a semi-decent summons. From there you can go almost anywhere, and can start completing the quests. By Lv 7 (where I am now, after about 10 days of mostly solo play) you're turning into a little powerhouse that can solo many places.
The fact that Sorcerers need to be lv 4 to cast 2nd ... |
| 24. | Re: Feedback from a Newbie Posted by Mhoraethian on 2/24/2004 11:05:30 AM However it is certain that Fighters and Magic Users are much closer to being on par in 3rd Edition and especially NWN, than they ever were in the old days. Fighters have picked up insta-death and fast kill feats, while in NWN Casters dont get any of their most powerful epic abilities (improved spell capacity anyone?). It seems obvious that Bioware is really trying to make the classes more equal. |
| 25. | Re: Feedback from a Newbie Posted by Mhoraethian on 2/24/2004 4:19:48 PM Yes, dont get me started on Dev Crit... what was Bioware thinking? |
