POLL: Contract Killing
Posted: 15 Nov 2003 02:09 PM
I know this is opening up a whole can of worms, but what are your people's thoughts on the idea of hiring a contract killer/assassin IG (Through PC means of course, not NPC's) on an occasion of slaying another PC? Now, before people jump to any conclusions, I believe that this should not be rampant, and in all honesty there really aren't that many powerful assassin types out there. The problem as well on many servers is it isn't often RP'ed (well) or even has the possiblity to be without completely ruining the effect.

Of course this matter would come into play more as players become more of a political aspect of the game (Both in policitical, ecnonomical, and social settings), but what I believe is an option is a widget of sorts:

1) An Elf comes to a Human assassin, wishing to have a Dwarf enemy killed. The Elf uses a widget upon the Human, which is much like a barter request. The Human must accept the deal, then the Elf must accept it as well. Once this is done, both are given a copy of a contract (A tangible plot item). Only 1-3 of these contracts can exist at any given time within the server. Once the assassination is fulfilled, another widget is used by the Human assassin with the Elf. Both must accept that the job was done, then the contract will dissapear from the inventory and the money/item/favor paid to the assassin.

Perhaps these widgets can be condensed into the player widget, or some other method. I'm not 100% sure if these ideas can be scripted either, as other options do exist (Like only one pair of contracts on the server per week allowed at max). Post your ideas/flames/constructive criticisms on the method and the IDEA of contract killing as well :).

I'll be the first to hire someone to eliminate Fen so he'll no longer make these kinds of posts.

well..
IMO.. I think that this is really too complex... why not using the ol' barter option?
if the 'buyer' wont pay.. he will be beaten up/killed or what ever by the merc and his gang /guild /guys (if he got)

I think these kind of chars (assasins) should Perm-kill chars.. cuz else.. what would be the point ?
(of course they can be asked to only wound or threat someone)
these should be DMs... or CPCs... or authorized PCs..
so there will be monitoring of this 'business' and also, we dont want too many of these assasins.. cuz .. well.. they kill ppl =p

I think there should be a guild (hidden and DM driven) of such chars.. and only chars that will be approved could take contracts..
(this will 'worth it' cuz the guild bribe fot them.. protect.. etc)
from the other side.. these ppl.. will never be allowed in Midor (unlese under cover of some sort)
and if they wont disguise themselves (maybe by a widget) the gaurds will attack them.

Contract killers can actually be pretty neat part of the game..
but -only- if they are RPed well.. that's why we need -authorized- only ppl.. and when they get a job well done, i guess they can also get RP rewards.

when thinking about it..
I dont think ppl should come to us asking us to be contract killers..
at the start.. untill we 'open' it to the public.. we will PM ppl if they might wanna join.. and then have them play PCs and then CPC that will drive the whole system.

I'm for it. Definatly. (Points to the time Hans murdered Telinos for a bit of gold) I also wouldn't mind being a member of this suggested guild

Well, having had a character perma dead after being contract killed on Vives, I have to say this:

"No, never, in any way, shape, or form, unless the things is worked out by the 3 PLAYERS involved beforehand, and all accept it wholeheartedly and willingly"

Oh... and I'm editing this in... if I see this being sanctioned by the staff, I think I'll leave.

Why would it have to be permament? I would think only the NPC's or CPC's would be perma killed... There must be a way to avoid the perma killing

If you have assasins, it has to be permanant, or it defeats the point. That's why I say "No, no way, not now, not ever, thank you" :P

So, DM-sanctioned PK of an unwilling 3rd party with Perma-Death, and the example victim is a Dwarf. Why do I feel that someone would like me not to be playing here? O_o

Dieties preserve us from the evil chaotics named Lag, Crash, and Server Reset.
PCs: Loli Dankirk (Ftr 18/Brd 8.5 @ 1777 hrs) left Vives for Origins; Gnora Gnombody (Sor 5 @ 54 hrs) and Amanda Stark (Wiz 3 @ ~10 hrs) left Vives for Feline Providence.

I share similar thoughts as Barnas on this issue. Sorry but this is a no go for me.

Some nice ideas Fen :D

However, there will NEVER be perma-death in Vives unless told as such by ONLY a DM (in most likelihood as part of a high-level Quest, involving potentially one-off high level rewards.... so you get to make your choice) , and with plenty of warning....... just thought I'd clear it up :D

Cheers

I'd say for plot-use only. So an actual assassination serves a greater goal than the enrichment of a char's ego and his purse ;).

And even when used to support plots, I do not think you can ever force this upon a character, without their direct approval.

Perhaps we could have a few CPC's in the future with a shady background, key elements in the current thieves guilds. And leave it to their imagination how they would use their dodgy abilities to spark some fun roleplay stories for the mod to enjoy.

Why can't I PM myself?

Speaking of Perma-killing... one of you DMs wanna set up something where my character Tasra Amalayax get's perma killed? I'm really very much sick of her.

I think it would be great.

Then you've obviously never had a character you put thought and effort into killed permanantly with no warning.

I don't wish to put words into Fen's mouth, but I hardly imagine he wanted this to work in such a way that you didn't know you were going to be a target. Also, what makes you think the assassination attempts would be successful? You could try to protect yourself or hire some guards... ;)

Just throwing out some ideas.

I always thought we could do this. The idea I had was that killing a PC was just as easy as killing a monster. Anybody can be an assassin. All they need is the skill and desire to do so. However, the perma death thing doesn't make sense in Vives and wouldn't work in the game. What an assassin char would need to do IG would be sneak in and knock unconsious their target, and THEN get out with the body so that nobody can rez the killed person. If the target is a PC, then this act would have to be roleplayed.

In other words to be an effective assassin char in Vives you need to become a kidnapper.

Come to think of it... this has already happened in an RP session to my own character, Cantor Matriel. He spent a week tied to a tree before managing to free himself.

Cantor Matriel - "How much?"

yeah this wont happen....why, because it is not good....killing is bad...we wouldnt want someone to cry cause they lost there character...boo hoo....vives seems to be a place of peace and non killing, except creatures, even if it would be rp...but noooo dont do that its bad *points finger*...oh well ill probably get in trouble for this and I really dont care because personally vives is going to feces...why dont you just put everyone to a certain level and leave them there? Or or take out thieveing skills altogether...wouldnt want to make anyone unhappy by losing an item right? oooh I got a cool idea we could all be priests and paladins and run around being jolly....lalalalalala.....{Removed flames.. dont let it happen again ~Alo}....other then that I have nothing against anyone else.....its was fun while it lasted....kind of...

first,
Barnas...
I had no clue it will be that fast =P
I talked to poke.. and after a moment she comes and tells me Talice is dead =p I wanted to talk to you about it in the IRC before is was suposed to happen.

and well.. about perm death..
I didnt mean killing him.. and he stays there..
for perma killing you need a DM to give you a RIP gem..
what i meant.. is pretty much as Barnas said..
you kill that char (not perma killing)
then that char is being asked by a DM wether the player agrees to be perma killed or not..
not - no RIP gem - but the char 'stays dead' untill the DM ask the player..
so you wont die and just respawn..
also, the idea of kidnapping a char.. IMO is a great idea.. and can work.. will also bring ppl to search for him..

and well.. about Ice's idea..
I dont really see the point.. of taking someones -eyes- out.. then he is being rezed..
now..
the magic is so powerful that it can bring back his soul to his body.. and heal it from all it's wounds.. -but- cant bring the eyes back?
(to remind you.. rez works on chars that were melted by dragons' fire.. or was chewed by a giant.. =P)

Dens: I do just hope that Fri'el never runs into her on the server... could have various consequences involving "Implosion" and "Gate" and "Laughter". Yes. I'm sore. I'm bitter. And oh..oh... so evilTongue outNah, I couldn't do that, since it would be OOC..... Unfortunately......

The problem with the proposed system would be this;

In order for the assasination to work, the character who would be assasinated couldn't know in advance. Thus, to be realistic, the player couldn't. That's not fair.

In order for there to be any point to an assasination, the target must stay dead. Otherwise, there simply isn't any point to it. I suppose staying dead until you can be raised would work... but then there should be NO "Dumping body into sea" :P

Kidnapping is a much better idea.

All IMHO,

-Barnas
