Not astrological...MUD!
I skimmed the article Henesua linked in his XP wishlist thread. It describes four kinds of players: Achievers, Explorers, Socializers, and Killers. How would you describe your playstyle?
I'd say I'm an Explorer. |

Definitely an Achiever with Socializer tendencies. I used to play MUDs for one reason - to dominate them. On my favorite MUD, I could take a character from level 1 to 300 (max level) in only a few days, and I knew all the locations of all the best gear, could kill anything (even things you shouldn't have been able to kill) and had things scripted for maximum effectiveness. But it was also a nice place to chat.
Yes, I readily admit that I strive to "beat" the game I'm playing. I role-play because I enjoy it, though, and sometimes it's nice to stop killing. |

All things being equal, I guess I"m a socializer.
Though I'd argue for a fifth category of storyteller, which is definitely the key reason why I play. I want to participate, in some way, in a cool, interesting, and hopefully long-lasting story. |

And a sixth category for me, story enjoyer.
I'm a little bit of all and don't like extremes. I like achieving something, but I'm not looking for power or high levels.
I love exploring (maybe that part gets a few percent more, there's no real extreme of that).
I like killing things as long as it's a challenge and not mindless H&S.
Roleplay is the key to an immersive world with a great atmosphere, the game doesn't work without it.
Socializing is what multiplayer is for unless you play in a simple PvP world - meeting other people. I enjoy that, of course.
All those things just need a good balance and I'm fine. |

| Actually the point of my posting that link was to consider what types of play defined Vivsers. The four types listed in the article are for MUDs. Given the much greater depth of Vives other categories suggest themselves such as some of you have already alluded to. |

Truly, I think any taxonomy of gameplayers along these lines is as useful as the astrological set...it's interesting, fun, and kind of cute, but hard to set stakes in to create a plan or direct policy...which is why I started it in off topics. You're right about the depth involved but I think it's in the players.
I stated yesterday (quickly because I was dodging cranky business execs buzzing around) that I was an explorer, but like the others who replied it's more of a trend. I've leveled via grinding a couple of times, sometimes I just like to go lay waste to the hobgoblins wearing a trenchcoat and wielding a sling, and many of you have shared extensive conversations with me at the Black Pearl. But what I enjoy most is slowly exploring a new area, seeing what it's about, and generally absorbing it. I have my own maps. If you gave me maps I wouldn't use them because I like gathering the experience myself. I have my own (incomplete) crafting logs though Kalannar has been good enough to post them; I use his to verify my results. I loathe racing through a new area. This makes me kind of an antisocial adventurer because I don't want to charge through dungeons or keep up a steady dialogue while exploring and it's easier to travel alone than try to mesh play styles. But when not in "explorer mode" I enjoy playing along as events require. |

Me too. I had mapped everywhere I had been in Vives too.
Now it is just in my head. |

Achiever/Explorer/Killer
Not necessarily in that order as I love discovering new things (areas/abilities/anything really...), but then I do get a lot of pleasure from killing critters as well (IG only, in real life... not so much ). |

Killer/Achiever/Socializer. Without a doubt. I may not care for traveling to exotic locations, but I do love killing some exotic creatures. Or players. The potential challenge in the next opponent is what keeps the game interesting for me.
And few things are quite as satisfying as getting to the next level. Except maybe chatting for hours on end. IC or OOC. Both are fine by me. |

Socializer.
There's nothing I enjoy more than getting wrapped up in someone else's character through my own. Supporting roles are my niche. |

| Achiever, Socializer, Explorer. In between grabbing that next level, and conversations with great, interesting, and smart (sometimes not so smart, not so great, and not so interesting, but you have to find out someway or another) people I sometimes stop to take in the view. I've seen hidden pictographs on cave walls, faces on rocks and trees, lewd art, and other "easter egg" comical things. Let's not forget all those gorgeous outdoor areas. |

| Socializer first, explorer 2nd. I play for the story. Combat and Leveling is highly rewarding, but as i seem to not be great at either, ive learned to enjoy hours upon hours of chatting IC and getting mixed up in the intrigue. |

I like to explore in order to find things, and or people, to socialise with. That having been done I like to kill those I have socialised with in order to achieve greatness... As you can see i've laid it all out for you to follow.
1. Explore 2. Socialise 3. Kill 4. Achieve
With these four easy steps you to can become a mighty lord of these lands... Or something like that. |
