Cloaks! love em or hate em? Posted: 18 Sep 2006 03:38 PM |
Alright...
first I just have to say, I pretty much hate the new visible cloaks. And after having played this game for... how many years has it been out now?.. and not seeing the cloaks. I have very much become accustomed to not seeing them.
Now, there are items in the game that give you bonus' to skills/attributes/feats/and so on...
Some of these items are cloaks... some of these bonuses are only -available- on a cloak.. (at least in Vives) thus, some of the cloaks are indespensible.
But -several- of my characters would not want to wear a cloak. (either for reasons of ease/fluidity of movement, or because its a fasion eyesore, or whatever) these are the same characters who recieve a benefit from equipping a particular cloak to their inventory, and I would rather not loose that bonus... but as there is not a suitable replacement item to be equipped elsewhere... I have to if I want to stay true to the character.
So on the one hand, the option is to just not wear one, and deal with the loss of that equipment slot for items that give a bonus... to whatever.
Or there are supposedly ways to remove the visible cloaks... I think one fix might be client side, so only the person who overrides it would no longer see the cloaks, and everyone else would still see their PC with this hideous monstrosity on... (not really a helpful fix unless you only ever plan to play SP) And there (hopefuly) is annother fix that will remove it for everyone (serverwide) though I'm not sure if that is true or not, but I know I have seen some stuff in the vault about removing the cloaks.
But before something like that is looked into, I figgured it would be a good idea to pose this question to everyone on the server... a poll if you like. because it would be silly to look into ways of removing the cloaks if all but a few players love the way they look.
So... Visible cloaks! do you:
A. Love them?

In the begining, I logged on, I thought it looked ridiculous. I mean, I was prepared for Brown shagginess, but I was like "That's huge! Why would any of my characters wear something that size!"
After that, I was annoyed.... mostly at the difference... I kept feeling stupid because everytime I tried to dye the cloak, I would use the dye on my armor, because I'm used to neck model cloaks... etc. And then I'd have different colored armor, and still a big brown shaggy cloak... and, yeah, I got a little impatient.
I did some looking around in the tileset, some color matching, and so far, I've managed to match many of my characters looks with the cloaks that they wear. My only problem with it now, is that some of my characters change through many different cloaks during one adventure, you know, because I'm a powergamer, and now the whole world is going to know. Also, my other complaint is that different cloaks are different sizes, some -remove- the shoulder models, like robes remove torsos, belts, pelvises and legs, while others leave them intact, and there are some shoulder models out there I really like. (You know, like those big squares)
So... They are growing on me. However, with this much of a drastic change to the system that's been in use for.... 5 years... well... I am -almost- positive that we are going to see invisible cloak appearances on the Vault in a matter of days. |

Come on... if your character wouldn't wear a cloak, then don't wear a cloak. If you are wearing a cloak, then you are wearing a cloak... I don't see this as anything more than a better visual representation of that which is already understood to be happening. Quickslot them - problem solved. It's like removing your coat in polite company, you know?
I wouldn't go so far as to say that I love 'em, but I don't see how we can really complain. Except about the overlap between built-in cloaks on noncraftable armor and our new cloaks. That looks silly. |

We've added a load more through haks, and next reset will see a few in-game, be interesting to see how people feel about'em then ;)
Personally I didn't like the idea at first......... but now that I'm looking at the different varieties etc in-game/toolset I'd have to vote Love'em ;)
there might also be something on the Vault or somesuch soon, which hopefully enable people to choose whether they want them showing....... or whether they don't....... that to me would be the best assuming it's workable ;)
Cheers

| I Agree with Rosen, if its on your character it should be on your character - And I think they look good - better then the original cloaks. You can change their look, into all sorts of pretty colours if you want and it gives the people who want to wear them more options. Already people change what they're wearing when going into town/heading into a dungeon so just add or remove your cloak to, yeah quickslot if you want. And yeah the only problem is it over lapping on the old cloaks, if only those could be removed somehow. |

Its a hate love thing for me. If I stand still.. Or run.. They look good to me. But if I walk, I HATE how they look. So, uh right. Vote: Hate em cause we dont get options to see em, or not. |

The new cloaks are good by me so far, though there are some things that I don't think I'll get used to. The "off the shoulder" cloak that pulls to the right side of the model should pull to the left, leaving the sword-arm free of the cloak. And another cloak just looks like a flotation device... Some of the cloaks look really good, and even the brown shaggy ones have their place.
These cloaks remind me of the periodic discussion of hoods, in that we end up shuttling back and forth between complaints that "everyone will have/wear one!" and the realization that "yeah, everyone would have one!", especially if they were standing around in Port Royale or on the Northern Highway... I don't think its odd to see half a dozen people standing around in their cloaks. We all wear cloaks!! I'm very glad that a graphical representation for wearing a cloak isn't so exclusive as it was before 1.68.
You can't modify plate armor to make it look like a silk shirt; if you want the benefit you have to wear the sorry representation of plate armor that Bioware came up with for NWN. I think its OK if the same is also true of cloaks. If a character needs the benefits, I think the player needs to get used to the look. I do wish you could tailor cloaks the way you can tailor armor. Tinting is a nice start and the dyes are cheap.
My only problem with it now, is that some of my characters change through many different cloaks during one adventure... and now the whole world is going to know.
This comment was funny as heck to me. I don't think its necessarily unseemly to swap out cloaks on an adventure. |

i just don't like how the cloaks look on robes...
It seems the color of the dye on a cloak - even when it is the same color used on a robe - does not represent the same. Looks a little odd.
Actually I think the cloaks look more like Capes, and now we are all super heroes. Especially if we slap 'em on on our way to the dungeon!
I can just hear the proclamations as we charge off on adventure: "Here I come to save the day!" "For justice!" "Freedom!" |

I would like to be able to turn the cloaks off and on. Ophelia's cloak gets in the way on her back swing. Which by the way caused me to roll a 1 on a saving throw for petrafication that also resulted in being eaten by some dust wraiths..or whatever the hell they are called.

I actually like the new cloaks.
They just look really snazzy to me; even though it's overlapping with the cape that comes with the robes (just as unequipable, and twice as ugly).
And, I may just be a little colorblind, but the colors I use for both robe and armor match pretty well; a very slight difference, but a good mix nonetheless.

I started immediately with disliking the cloaks for a single reason: They have a clipping issue with the shoulders of wizard robes. Some/most of them do anyway. And I love my wizard robes.
Then I started playing around with the wardrobe-in-a-sack my characters seem to magically have occasionally... and they started not looking bad. I mean, you change your character's look a little, play with the dyes, and the cloaks start to look great - except when you're walking, like Glor said. So, I'll give the cloaks a two out of three, and can't wait to see what's being put in to make 'em better from the haks and whatnot. |

| It depends on the timing I suppose. I think they look pretty good, the clipping is annoying at times but over all I prefer them to not. |

| Overall I'm in favour of the things, having spent much time seeking out good neck nodel cloaks for many of my suits of armour, also it aleviates my annoyance at some of my characters wearing cloaks but not being able to see them.... I mean who'd brave PR without a cloak to shield them from the constant rain, or venture into the Kobai in a suit of platemail without something to screen out the sun. |

Hate them, and very glad to see I'm not alone.
This is one thing I will never understand about the NWN community. The desire to implement things that only half-way work some of the time just because people whine for it on the bioware forums.
If they had been part of the game from the start and folks had been able to build around them, fine. But putting them in this late seems to me like a big screw you we'll do what we want to all the people who've made decent custom content without them. |

B. Hate 'em Fashioable reasons only. I don't agree with BKatt on the point of some characters not wanting to wear a cloak for this reason and that, but still has one in an inventory. Cloak's a cloak, even if you don't see it. I just don't really the look they give to some of my characters, namely Alton. I mostly imagined Alton wearing the cloak tied around his waist like some people tie their jackets when it's too warm to wear them already. It's more fitting for his character than to wear a cloak like a knight, and it justifies not having a visible cloak on him, the lack of which looking better. Now that he does have one... bleh... doesn't look so well. |

as was stated...they look like capes to me. my next request...tights and dyeable underoos.
oh...so that is a love 'em, I guess...even though they look hideous, and have issues with beards and some alternative fighting styles.
i do think, though, if you want the benefits, suck it up and accept the bad with the good. sure it is late in the game to implement them, but better to fix it late than not at all. I am less inclined to care about 'style' in RL and IG than some others, though...my next character, however...might change all that. |

I love em... after I got them all custom tailored tot he colors I wanted... now if only the Dyes were the colors they say they were, and were consistent on all cloaks. Apparently some cloaks are made with different fibres and take to colors differently. It was a lot of work getting them fixed how they'll serve my uses, but I think it'll be a nice change.

Just to throw grease on the fire... (but first, a sincere thanks to everyone who has posted, and keep em comming)
to all who have stated, if you want the bennefits, than you just have to accept the look of it and get on with life.
Yes, thats all fine and good, but then how come we don't have different boots show up when we put on boots?
or how about bracers and/or gloves?
or, hey.. what about those belts we put on?
yeah... nothing happens when we put any of THAT stuff on... so why should we be burdened with the cloaks.. after we spent such a long time trying to craft a decent look for our character... suddenly we get these visible cloaks thrown in and we either have to 'not wear it' or deal with how stupid and out of place it looks on our character if we want the benefits it gives.
so what if next they added boots. so every time you put on a set of boots, it changed THAT also.. and.. oh, I dunno.. someone out there plays a character who goes barefoot.. so now THEY either have to go against their character idea and keep those boots that are quite beneficial/helpful/expensive... OR.. not wear them..
and next they add visible bracers.. so now all the mages who wear bracers of armor to supliment their AC now have these big hideous 'barbarian looking' bracers sticking out of their robes.. or over them.. or whatever.. yeah.. and probably totaly looks stupid.. but hey... just deal with it, because if you have bracers on, then it should look like it.
and on and on..
My point being, that these items we find or buy as we grow in levels and experience.. is part of improving your character.. but up untill now, they have not been visible, except for armor, and I personaly have gotten used to the idea of crafting a look for my characters without these other inventory items showing up. and now, with the cloak, I either have to give up on that look I crafted or envisioned and wear the stupid thing and deal with the way it looks, so I can get the benefits from it... or not wear it at all... and give up on the enhancements that are part of growing your character.
If they had been there from the very start... I'm sure I would have been fine with it.. it would have been how things worked, and I never would have known any different.
but throwing it in, this late in the game, so I have to change my whole way of imagining my characters... I'm just not happy about it.
and then... yeah, why not all the other inventory items..? and pretty soon all we will be able to wear is armor/clothes because anything else you put on will look hideous/stupid/gawdy/not fitting for the character... OR perhaps a combination of everything would look really cool... and you would know what kind of items different people were wearing just by looking at them.. *shrugs*
yep. just fanning the flames. I'm totally fine with whatever the DM team wants to go with.. but I just felt the need to say my piece. and wanted to hear (and still want to hear from those who havent posted yet) what all of you think.
