Area Transitions Posted: 13 Jan 2004 05:19 AM |
Since HOTU-1.61 and Version 1-12, I've noticed a few problems with area transtitions. The first, and most immediately obvious, is that the pretty little picture in the area transitions is almost always -wrong-. It is a picture from another tileset than the one you're going into (Icy Vale seems to have a tendancy to use Beholder Tunnels pictures). About 1/10th of the time, the picture is absent entirely. This is not very serious, but can be kind of annoying. It also led me to wonder if Vives could have its own area transition pictures. Much like the one which can be seen at the top of the site. It would add an original touch to the server, and at the same time get rid of that annoying little glitch (Which could be fixed in other ways, but this seemed like a logical place to stick that little idea which has been floating around in my head for a while now...)
The more serious problem is that I've noticed, and experienced a -lot- of crashes when people go through area transitions. Sunday I think I crashed out 3 or 4 times since the area didn't load. I also noticed a fair few people in my party crashing out when the party bar showed them as being "between areas". I don't have a clue what the problem is here, but it is most certainly annoying and inconvenient- especially if you're in an area where it would be real useful for your party to have their cleric/rogue/fighter ETC. If half the party crashes out across an area transition, I can see some serious problems which could arise. I'm sure others can too.
Anyway, there's my little post on area transitions.

| Hmm, we need to verify if this is vives specific or HoTU specific. Could be something in the haks the mod uses conflicting with HoTU content? |

| the pictures where never 'correct' in vives, at least certainly not for all area's. But indeed with HoTU it seems everything got mixed up or something. Also resulting in showing no pic at all. |

Re: Area Transitions Posted: 13 Jan 2004 06:43 AM |
I'm actually having serious problems with crashing since HotU.
Changing area is the worst one. It 'stall's' in loading, at either the last quarter or in the last 6th of the loading. Ferein is a prime culprit for this, as is Midor. And, of all the annoying area to not load because you can't avoid it - the OOC Introduction area.
Sometimes, I'll crash simply because people around me have entered the area, or I've opened my inventory, or I've opened the Creator. You know, insert random stupid reason here.
So, if you know it's me DMing, and a character 'disappears' - he hasn't disappeared. The DM is merely swearing and cursing at her NWN again :P |

Re: Area Transitions Posted: 13 Jan 2004 07:14 AM |
I just had my first crash on an area transition.
[edit] Hmm, seems the entire game either crashed or reset on its own. I had a 5 minute warning shortly before the area transition/crash. Who knows what really happened. [edit] no, was able to log back on. odd. some tron just got mad at me i suppose. |

Re: Area Transitions Posted: 13 Jan 2004 08:05 AM |
Rul: I -think- the area-load-crash problem would somehow be Vives specific. Of course, I cannot be sure of this, but I have played a lot of local games with HOTU and exactly the same settings, and not experienced this crash once. Of course, this does not factor in that it could be an online NWN HOTU issue rather than a Vives specific one.
The thing which makes me believe that it is likely to be somehow Vives specific is that after 1.61/HOTU came, I never had this problem, and don't recall seeing anyone else affected by this issue- though I think normal crashes did increase.
After the new haks and the new naming convention started (1-x as opposed to .99ags or whatever), I started to notice these transition crashes happening.

[Edit: And if you quit NWN, restart it, and log back onto Vives, the area seems to load normally the second time. Which is just weird.] |

Re: Area Transitions Posted: 13 Jan 2004 08:19 AM |
I used to experience crashes like that also before HoTU. I think it might have to do with one of the haks *cough*crappy*cough*Horn*cough*of*cough*the*cough*fox*cough*
A reinstall of haks used to help. But sometimes with new content killing a certain monster made NWN explode. And I always had trouble logging in my DM, as if my game fails sometimes to connect with the OOC transition area where we start. Always need two attempts to get my DM char in.
I think Ara or Q (or both) are looking into some of the haks to remove unnecessary or crappy stuff. Not sure though. |

Re: Area Transitions Posted: 13 Jan 2004 11:14 AM |
| The faulty loadscreens will be a consequence of the new tilesets conflicting with custom loadscreens from the 3rd-party ones. That will be defined in loadscreens.2da. AFAIK the only way to correct it is to edit the properties of each area that had a custom loadscreen, and reset the screen. This is what I had to do on my own module when SOU came out. |

Well for what it is worth, there is a log message associated with these events.
Unknown Update sub-message
Does this ring a bell with any system guru? |

Hmm, nope. And I don't see that message in any of my logs. Where did you discover that message? Anyway, this all seems like some sort of broken hakpack issue to me, but I can not be certain.

Re: Area Transitions Posted: 13 Jan 2004 02:12 PM |
Now THIS one I have noticed. There are times when a door is a transition or shows an actual door in the doorway for others, but not for me, resulting in me being unable to even go there. What's worse is this also effects me (About 5% - 10% of the time) as a DM! Meaning I can't specially lock, unlock, or trap doors either. A nasty bug to say the least, I guess all we can do is wait for Bioware to get off their lazy butts and do their job (I'm personally a real hard a$ towards computer game companies because any other job with high delays and poor product without being patched pronto = firings. If anyone here works at such a company, do your dang job).

Re: Area Transitions Posted: 13 Jan 2004 02:53 PM |
Missing transitions were happening to me before the upgrade. It seems to happen when complete information is no longer being passed to me from the server. Monsters and other players are also sometimes invisible, and the party list is not synced. As Ice says, relog fixes it.
As I mentioned in IRC:
http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=298002&forum=47&highlight=will+save
And Q, the log is the users window log. I always got that submessage thing at the end of a file when the program crashed, even before the upgrade. Last Sunday when the server was going nuts lagging, that message was in my log several times. And when I finallly logged out, my machine did bluescreen. |
