Bioware merchants...
Posted: 05 Jan 2004 09:41 AM
There's a slight problem with the switchover to Bioware merchants.

The prive for everything has gone up by a factor of 10, and the ammount they buy for has stayed the same.

Essentially, this means that the playerbase won't be able to afford items in a very short time.

Examples:

From the poor peddler (Vives merchant) a Mahogany X-Bow is 3400 GP

From Rador (Bioware), same X-Bow is 34000 GP.

And the most any merchant will buy an item for is 600 GP.

A change in price, especially making things more expensive and making it less easier and more logical where you sell your stuff for what price, was planned.

By what factor I don't know. So this might be intentional, who knows.

Why can't I PM myself?

Don't iron out the Irony.

I dont know if it is supost or not BUT if you want to buy something and it costs, 30000, and if you sell the same thing you get 600g. How is it possible for us to get the money to buy anything really.... Not to mention loot is still the same... Its prety unbalanced this way.

A change in price is very well and good, Rul. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that it's a very good idea, you could get some items far too cheaply. *cough* Midoran Tower Shields.

Problem which I'm pointing out, and some other players have noticed as well, is that no-one with the ammount of money people have on Vives will be able to afford anything with the merchants like this.

Items cost that much on Knightsbridge. That was absolutely fine.......

However , on Knightsbridge, it wasn't unusual to earn 40000 gold a day as a PC, and my PCs there always had 2/3/400000 gold.

On Vives, that simply doesn't happen. That's -great-, since there -is- too much money on many servers. I just think that the current prices overshot the mark by quite some distance.

I know that the PC I'm playing at the moment would have to bankrupt herself to buy -anything- from one of the Bioware merchants IG. Might as well not have them, when that's the case.

Well, going through another iteration of merchant implementations will require this sort of feedback and subsequent tweaking. It's just the cost of doing business, so to speak.

Hmmm...tooled around a bit to some of the merchants.

I liked it on the old merchants where they would only pay 1gp for stuff they didn't really specualize in, and only sell stuff that made sense for them (Such as a shield merchant selling only shields, and not paying hardly as much for bows as a bowshop would). However, the general stocks and items need to be tweaked a bit. One example I can think of is Billybob, who sells prctically all armor, weapons, etc.

Could elf characters not use detect mode to see the price in the old merchants? Never really played an elf in Vives myself...

Fen,

Elfs are given the keen feat automatically at the beginning which puts them in a permanent detect mode(may not be keen, but something gives them permanent detect mode). So, they are also given an amulet to put on to see what prices are...it kinda gets to be a pain though switching your amulets out everytime you want to look at a price. I'm glad that part is changing cause half the time i would forget to put the price checking amulet on and i would buy things on accident. sttuuuuuupid

The new HOTU merchants and scripting etc gives us the option of many many things whilst using their interface. Such as:

(1) Persistent inventories (as is the case now).
(2) We can decide whether they will identify items, and if so how much they will charge.
(3) We can make them have a spending limit (as is the case now but less "buggy").
(4) We can enable them to use the appraise, persuade etc skills, which we are doing.
(5) We can make them only trade in certain items (which is sort of the case now)... so they will flat out refuse to buy items they are simply not interested in.
(6) Loads of other cool stuff...

Basically, these will have all of the advantages of the "old" ones..... plus extra cool stuff, and none of the bugs (like disappearing healing kits and arrows etc)....

It'll take us a little while to get them switched over though, and there might be a few teething troubles, like the ones descibed in this thread..... but we'll get there, and hopefully it'll be better for everyone ;)

Cheers

Ara

One thing I'd like to see is what Morrowind did. Merchants will NOT buy illegal items since they won't be caught with them (Like poison, addictive substances, etc)

That's easy. Stick the "stolen" tag on illegal items, then set merchants not to buy stolen goods.

.... And then have a black market.

Stolen Goods..... How in Hell Names does a Merchant know that an Item Was stolen ....
I am pretty sure they dont have bar code saying this belongs to ( insert name ) and has been stolen. If I steal something in paws and sell it in Ferein the Ferein Merchant should not know that this is stolen good. Well IMO.
I know thief could abuse it and sell-steal-sell-steal .... expensive items for unlimited gold if that thing wasnt there but aside from that abusive conduct ....

Well theoretically the merchant it was stolen from could recognize it. There was a flaw in the way it was done in Morrowind, however, because a record on the character said "stole Item-Such-And-Such from Merchant-Such-And-Such". Thereafter, -any- Item-Such-And-Such that the character tried to sell to Merchant-Such-And-Such would be confiscated as the stolen one. Also, I don't think the record was ever cleared, so that merchant would go on claiming that type of item from the character forever.

That's why they make character editors. *evil laughter*

Dieties preserve us from the evil chaotics named Lag, Crash, and Server Reset.
PCs: Loli Dankirk (Ftr 18/Brd 8.5 @ 1777 hrs) left Vives for Origins; Gnora Gnombody (Sor 5 @ 54 hrs) and Amanda Stark (Wiz 3 @ ~10 hrs) left Vives for Feline Providence.

Current Characters - Worik the Wanderer, Joda Zod, and Kango.

If it was one of the older merchants, they had issues with stackable items

a little more away from the topic, is there any marchand that is specializing in helmet? Since Paws has (in my believe) only Mennuir as a shopkeeper, it would be great to see an helmet dealer in this area or whereverSmileyI cant wait to find an helmet to protect my poor willed fighter( that is even if he have a good score in wis )

Check the midor blacksmith, he might have something you may want. As an aside though, all merchants are getting tweaked a bit this weekend, a few others added as well, so we'll take it from there tooSmiley.

Is the pricing still being looked at? For I only found one merchant who actually sells higher than 600 gp (well not that much higher), but all others pay a maximum of 600 gp. And when you look again at the object you just sold, some cost 10000+ gp.

I find it reasonable to pay around 7000-10000 gp for a high level scroll, but if that same scroll fetches only 600gp there's a slight problem imhoTongue outSame goes for things people craft.

IMHO I think it's best to lower the price the merchants are selling things for. As was previously stated a lot of the items suddenly cost 10x more than what they used to cost.

Something else which I found strange: I sold jewelry to the gnome merchant in Midor and the 2nd time I go there, it says: This merchant doesn't buy items of that type. When I check all the other things he usually accepts it's the same. I think that's mostly the case after one of those Server Error Messages appears. Has anyone else had that? Not being able to sell materials of the same kind to a same merchant I mean, not the error.

We have not yet spent the time to rethink the econ as we'd like. I left all the new merchants fairly impotent in what they'd pay out, since I'd rather not open this window of gross payouts due to the change that's occuring. Please give us some time.
