The End of Us Posted: 24 Nov 2003 05:41 AM |
We all play Neverwinter Nights. We're all hideously addicted. We all love Vives to death. What happens when newer, better RPG's come out? Eventually, we'll all end up getting over Neverwinter Nights. What then? We can hardly expect our scripters and toolseters to make a new Vives on another game. It'll just be too much work.
So what then? What will we do then? We'll all miss one another, we'll all think about happy thoughts we had with one another, good jokes, good times.
But the community will eventually disband. Time goes on. People move on. Kids goto college, adults get families, seniors die. So what then? We will all feel the pain of loss. Whenever we lose even one old player, we all have our thoughts. We ask "I wonder what he's doing now?" or sometimes we're lucky enough for them to stay in IRC with us.
But the community will eventually disband. It will have to. It's the nature of the beast. So what then? What then? |

| You will die one day... Whats then? |
Why search around when the answer is within you...?

Then?
Then we move on and work with the choices we made for ourselves. I was on a community before this one, I didn't like it. So based on personal reasons I left there. As long as you can justify a choice for yourself when making a decision, you should not wonder: What next?
As for this community to disband, I know Baldurs Gate communities which still exist, Diablo I. They are not disbanding and those games are even older. If a concept works for you that might be enough to keep you interested for a long time. Yet, I guess indeed eventually someone's interest wanes for this mod or NWN in general. That's their right and privilige, and we are to respect that.
Of course it is unfortunate people might leave, so you might just as well enjoy yourself while you are 'here'. And personally I'd be worried more over my direct RL than a gaming community ;). For most this is a game to enjoy themselves, to wonder what they will do in the future... you could say: Who cares, as long as they are happy?
And if this community actually will disband, I rather not think about that and let it ruin my current enjoyment of the mod.

We tried so hard and go so far, but in the end....
nevermind...
anyway, you've already stated that people will move onto newer things, and if they do they'll probably find that others have moved to there as well. So really the cycle just repeats itself. |
Eh? |

I had to stop and think back on previous experiances. So I could post on this topic (so bare with Poor Alenuska)
Parting, is bitter sweet for some. Others less so,I've been in my share of guilds and online communities. Some would disband and later for sentimental or nostalgic purposes attempt rebuild only to be swept away with the sands of time. But one thing I've learned is this, and yes time in a sense is a preditor and time is also a companion who goes with us on our journey, and reminds us to cherish the moments of our lives and adventures because they will never come again. And to be quite frank and honest with all of you I think bilbo said it best here " I don't know half of you half as well as I should like and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve! " (which is true) And in saything this I know ill only probly keep in touch with maybe one or two of you but that's life Hell my old icq list was two hundred now its down to ten and its become quite less over the years but who cares the people I do keep in touch with (from various guilds and servers ) I enjoy my online experiance with (even formed a small group of online associates to game with its sort of a guild ) None the less nothing lasts forever and when the red curtain is to be drawn. I'll take a bow blow a kiss and see where my next online gameing experiance takes me.
As for your comments in Irc if vives were to be a family it would be a very disfunctional one at that id probly be estranged :)
though if the end comes and whoever wants to keep in touch feel free to ether way its your choice whatever happens, happens I wont shed any tears..
Also Ive always been a fond believer in the sense that to make life important you have to die. |

| I think NWN has atleast a few years left in it. There are plenty of D&D games being made but none of them even have a multiplayer mode (none that i have heard of). Its a good game and heck, i still know people that play starctaft. |

I always get a warm feeling when I meet someone several years later, in another community, that I knew from another community that had died.
Grah! Run Hand! |
Dieties preserve us from the evil chaotics named Lag, Crash, and Server Reset. PCs: Loli Dankirk (Ftr 18/Brd 8.5 @ 1777 hrs) left Vives for Origins; Gnora Gnombody (Sor 5 @ 54 hrs) and Amanda Stark (Wiz 3 @ ~10 hrs) left Vives for Feline Providence. |

In all honesty I see NWN as being around for quite a long while.
Why is that you may ask?
Because it gives the closeness of a PnP group and classic fun of D&D, with the graphical flavor and large player base of a small MMORPG. THese two combined are not in any game thus far (Except for what may be in a NWN 2 if it ever comes along), plus expansions are always coming out of Bioware for the PW's to constantly fix :P. And unlike MMORPG's, you actually get to CHANGE things in a PERSISTENT world :).
The player base is great, the staff is great, and at the time being (and for awhile) there really is no other game with such rich creativity, design, and replayablity that you can get off a NWN PW, let alone Vives :).

I'm as new as a mucous covered baby in this community (if my application is approved- yes- that new) but have just departed another online community as a very senior person and player who others looked up to. I know people miss me there, but these things cycle.
You shouldn't by any means start to worry when old people leave, only when new people stop joining.

This reminds me of a familar scene...
~ Nascentes mourir: from the moment you're born, you die ~
But that doesn't - never - prevent people from upholding their high and noble cause. Bitter-sweet is always nicer than just-sweet... thanks for working on this very cool world!
