Happy Halloween! Horror Flicks Posted: 31 Oct 2007 08:49 AM |
My favorite holiday! And I'm home alone this year!
How long can I resist the short stack of horror movies I rented last night in preparation?
High point of the evening is going to be The Descent, which I've seen before but am totally excited to watch again.
What are your favorite horror movies? At the video store I got the familiar feeling that I've seen everything. And some really great maverick horror from the 70s and the 80s is only out on VHS. Throw me a bone here - what's the scariest, ickiest, ghastliest thing you wish you'd never watched? |
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about dying."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means lying in the ground with dirt on your face and holding your breath forever."

Although scary movies terrified me as a kid - even the totally awful ones like slasher movies - nothing really gets me today. My wife loves to watch scary movies during Halloween also. So far, we've watched Suspiria (lame! although stylish in a low budget 70's way), The Mothman Prophecies (boring, but almost an xfiles episode), and 1408 (which I liked because it made me tense in a few spots).
Past horror movies that I have really liked because they seem to have a lingering affet on me are Ghost Story, and Alien. Although it isn't scary, The Village was an interesting film. My wife loves Stephen King and so "It" is usually on the menu. |

I'm not one for copious amounts of blood & gore (not that it bothers me, but many times it's a case of using it to hide a poor screenplay/script)...... usually I prefer the more psychologically based horror.
Recent ones I liked:
The Descent (Check out Dog soldiers too if you haven't seen it, it's by the same director). Wolf Creek. Ringu (Japanese, NOT the vastly inferior American remakes). 28 Days Later. May. High Tension/Switchblade Romance (differing titles according to location).
then the slightly older ones would be:
The Shining. The Exorcist. Romero's Dead movies (especially Dawn)... Martin also gets a nod here. Evil Dead (of course!). Jacob's Ladder.
Some of these aren't pure horror of course ;)
The one that scares the crap out of me still though is The Wizard of Oz! But If I had to recommened a good movie for people tonight, it would be Pan's Labyrinth....... yeah, I know.... it's not really horror at all, more an adult fable/fairy tale.... but it is beautiful and one of my favourite movies! (also check out The Devil's Backbone).

| I'm not much for horror films, but the one a couple of my friends talk about as being absolutely disturbing is Audition (Japanese film, I think). |

Bambi.
That poor, poor deer.
If they only shot an elf instead. Would have made a comedy out of the whole thing. |

Hehe....... yeah it's pretty disturbing all right Much of the movie is a slooow build-up to something truly terrifying at the end. Good movie :) |

Hell yeah.
Really liked Pan's Labrynth, and have not seen The Devil's Backbone (except... at the video store - thanks!).
Haven't seen Dog Soldiers or May either. Good tips! I'm a big fan of George Romero. They do zombie walks around Pittsburgh this time of year. I haven't ever been home for one, but they do one at the Monroeville Mall where he shot Dawn of the Dead, and on Pittsburgh's South Side, which is more of a street parade.
Stuart Gordon's Reanimator movies and From Beyond are also spectacular.
Audition is supposed to be quite severe, saw another movie by the same director w/o knowing it, called Graveyard of Honor. There's this amazing scene in the end where the main character brings a small paper box of his cremated wife's bones to negotiate w/ a Yakuza boss, and he sits there eating his wife's bones. He won't stop crunching up his wife's bones and go away until they give him what he wants. Its nuts!
Couple other movies I also saw on the shelf, Black Christmas and last year's remake, both on DVD. Can I possibly stoop that low? |

Dog Soldiers isn't as straight-laced as The Descent is....... it's got it's comedic moments. It's kind of erm.... Soldiers vs Werewolves? Hard to explain really ;)
May is a smallish indie horror flick, more psychological, but scarily believeable. It'll creep you out more than shock, if you can find it to rent.
Audition really is psychological too...... it'll hit a lot harder for the males What (for me at least) is more disturbing is the long build up to the much talked-about climax, rather than the end result. It does take some work though, it's most certainly not a popcorn movie (which Dog Soldiers pretty much is).
Wolf Creek is another smallish indie I would recommend....... it's beautifully shot (Australian outback) and well-acted..... it is quite nasty though, one of the more "disturbing" films I've seen for some while.... but then that needn't be a bad thing, as long as it's not gratuitous, which it isn't (people alsways seem to think Texas Chainsaw Massacre is vicious and downright nasty, but if you look very closely, there's hardly any gore or graphic violence at all..... it does an excellent job of making you think you're seeing things which you aren't, at least not on-screen, much like Wolf Creek).

Happy Haloween every one. My daughter is going trick-or-treating for the first time tonite...with a group of neighborhood kids and Mom.
As for horror I've never much been into horror. My short list:
The Shining -pretty much classic and far better in book version.
Jaws- I -would- not go out over 3 feet deep for a decade. Especially after seeing pictures of them schooling near people on a sandbar and them unaware. Photo was by helicoptor.
Red Dragon- didn't turn out well in the first movie version...haven't seen the second but one excellent book.
Wifey says The Shining, What lies beneath, she also liked Gothika and Stir of Echoes. I'll refrain from comment and just relay them. |

Renter, Devil's Backbone is a good movie. So consider this a double endorsement.
He did Blade 2 shortly after. Which is not as good of course, but still visually interesting. You can tell by the color of the Blade 2 that it was made after Devil's Backbone. Very similar art style.
You can never go wrong with those Mexican directors in my book. I think they call themselves The Three Amigos. |

| Make that a triple endorsement. It's very creepy and has a well crafted story. And if you know Pan's Labyrinth you will see a similar theme. |

It's a good film, but isn't really as horror-inspiring as the critics make it out to be. Same with the other Hannibal Lector movies. Ditto the books (though they're much more satisfying; and violence isn't quite graphic enough when Hollywood does it; my own imagination is very fulfilling in that area).
They're worth watching, but probably not on Halloween. |
