Event: A Gathering of (Wannabe) Heroes
Posted: 27 Sep 2007 06:45 AM
((Posted on behalf of Imperious. The original thread is here: New Occasional Adventuring Party. This is also posted at Neverwinter Connections.))

All legends must begin with a single step. Even the great heroes of lore were once unknown, still learning and honing their skills. With the land still in chaos and confusion, perhaps it is time for a new generation of heroes to emerge, men and women of all races, with the necessary skills and abilities to make their mark on the world and take their place among the pantheon of legends. Or perhaps not….

But regardless of their final destiny, fate has brought some individuals together to the Four Winds Inn, ready to test their mettle, in the fiery crucible that is…Vives! *cue ominous music*

What: Remember the old Pen n’ Paper days of D&D, when you met at the same time every week with the same group of players and formed the greatest adventuring group the world had ever known? Maybe you do, maybe you don't, but this is an attempt to try to do just that online for NWN. We’ll meet up once (or even twice or more a week depending on schedules) and develop our PCs together in the world of Vives.

This is for new characters, levels 1 through 3 (at most please), so we can all feel useful.

This group is a great opportunity for new players to step right into a new world and have immediate roleplay opportunities with other characters. And for veterans of Vives, it’s a chance to take a break from your more experienced and powerful characters and start over with a new perspective.

Most importantly, this is meant to be a fun, laid-back experience. Don’t worry if you don’t have an elaborate PC background; you can develop him/her as we go along and play off the other personalities. If you can’t make it one week, you can always join in the next. Hopefully we can develop a core group of players who can meet at the same time every week.

When: Tuesday, Oct. 2, beginning at 7:00 Pacific Time, 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time, or 3:00 a.m. GMT. We may go through 3-4 hours depending. Currently, we’re shooting for Tuesday evenings. We may change the day or add additional ones as people join and schedules change.

Where: Common Room of the Four Winds Inn (where new PCs start).

This sounds like a great idea. Tuesday 10 PM EST is typically a good time for me and I will try to make it as often as I can.

((bump))

About 24 hours from now...come one, come all with your new PCs and get ready for some Warp 10 excitement!!!!!

...or....ummm....ehh....something like that....

I have no idea exactly what we'll end up doing (I guess the act of just meeting might take a little bit), but given all the brainpower assembled (read that however you like), I"m sure we'll come up with something interesting...and foolhardy...DEFINITELY foolhardy.

Psh, we'll probably just spend most the time introducing our characters all around and somehow melding into something vaguely resembling a party :P

Thats the great thing about level 1 characters in Vives: you don't loose xp when you respawn.

The (Mis)Adventures Continue!
Posted: 03 Oct 2007 06:40 PM
We had such a good time on Tuesday evening that we will continue the story of our intrepid young (well, Barrett is awfully old!) heroes on Friday night, Oct. 5, at 7:00 p.m. PST, 10:00 p.m. EST, and some ungodly hour GMT (maybe 3:00 a.m.).

Again, anyone is welcome to join. All we've done is get to know each other (a little), argue (a lot!) and make a short foray into Carfax (will try to post a vague story if I have time). I think we're all about level 2 or so. So feel free to stop by if you want. A nice group with some interesting personalities....

We went about three hours on Tuesday, and that seemed like a good amount of time. A fun session without suddenly looking up shell-shocked and realizing eight hours of your life have passed. Probably go a little longer on Friday, I'm guessing, but we'll just see how it plays out.

Where: Oh hells, I don't know. Either at the Four Winds or around the Standing Stones (look for badgers!).

The world is a fine place, and worth fighting for...

Just as a note, beware! Working on such little sleep can cause vast amounts of embarassment! Though it is an extremely fun group. And we're always glad to have more people to bicker with :D

I'll try and be punctual this time Tas!

Sorry Tas - I'm working right up to our start time, otherwise I'd jump IG and futz around with you (being careful all the while not to accumulate XP until our party was more or less whole!). I understand you have early mornings so I'll do my part to get us going promptly.

I'm really enjoying this BTW, especially the anticipation that comes with not just jumping in and playing anytime I want to. For some reason down time = more fun with this.

If you don't mind, I'd be jumping into the madness with a new, yet-unborn character of my own.

Be afraid... be VERY afraid.

WickedArtist: I think he needs a proper elf.
WickedArtist: A christmas elf!
Tasra: Any sort of elf that actually smiles ;o

Don't worry, I try to sleep before and after doing this. And I just rolled out of bed, logged into Papa John's, and re-ordered what I had a few nights ago. Three clicks later, and now I'm rolling back into bed until it gets here :D

OMG....that was hysterical...Thanks, WA, Jarook is awesome. Otse and Krul were hysterical. Barrett was...well...Barrett (how more perfect could it be that Barrett went to take a nap and Tasra actually feel asleep?). Sorry Einarr and Starr weren't able to stay...Am I forgetting anyone? Sorry, it's late and I"m tired.

It is POSSIBLE -- just possible, I tell you-- that we might have been a bit too silly, me included. I hope we didn't turn anyone off. We started that way and never really got out of second gear, which was fine if you were into it. I was thinking the group might be just a little bit heroic and serious on occasion, but I guess quests for the stone privy of darkness don't exactly scream Lord of the Rings? Wink

Course, if you can have a series of adventures about shovels, I suppose a privy shouldn't be out of the question? I'm not complaining, because half of the night I was doubled over laughing...but maybe for the future we can at least move things along more quickly?

So we'll try again Tuesday evening, Oct 9, 7:00 p.m. PST, 10:00 p.m. EST. Everyone free to join. We're still all 2nd level (trust me, after that night, we are all DEFINITELY still 2nd level). We'll try to be vaguely more serious....maybe...I can't promise anything! ;)

P.S. And thanks to Johe and ZigZig for special guest appearances!

The world is a fine place, and worth fighting for...

Agreed, I laughed more during this session than the last one. And for the last one I was really ready to laugh!

As to the silliness... I don't know how we managed to create such a goofball party - we really belong in a special wing at the Seven Sisters - but it does not have to stay that way. We can decide OOC if this adventuring group is going to goof off for several hours each week, or get into some stories. This freeform stuff has been great, I think we've established these characters and some dynamics within the group, and we can absolutely integrate new/occasional folks who haven't been privy to our adventures so far (yeah I said it, whadda you lookin' at?). No complaints so far at all, but...

Let's meet in the OOC lounge at the appointed hour next Tuesday and talk this stuff out. What is an acceptable level of silliness, what are we looking to get out of this, what tone are we trying to set, etc. I feel like we should come to some agreements either IC or OOC about who is leading our party, what we're after, and so forth.

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about dying."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means lying in the ground with dirt on your face and holding your breath forever."

Renter, on Tuesday I expect a full Powerpoint presentation on acceptable levels of silliness, including the system of measuring silliness you're going to use and what measure of silliness you'll be using -- the kilolaugh? milli-chuckle? centi-goof? I personally prefer the hecta-snicker, but that's just me.

As for the leader of the party, I think THAT's obvious...De Breenie's are born leaders!

As to what we're after, I think the most eloquent way to be put it would be to quote Poison and Brett Michaels: "Nothing but a Good Time!!!" *makes rock n' roll devil sign with hands*

The world is a fine place, and worth fighting for...

We'll use the ALoS (Acceptable Level of Silliness), which is an index derived in part from the volume of punctuation marks that players type into the chat line, exclusive of periods. Examples would be "?!" and "????". Typing in all caps also boosts the ALoS score, as do silly names and use of any words containing the letter "k" (try it out!).

Periods contribute to the so-called "Snarky Factor", in that three of them together in place of a sentence boosts server snarkiness in proportion to silliness (i.e. "...").

I am not a fan of the Snarky Factor.

Using an ellipsis instead of finishing a thought or a sentence does not contribute to the Snarky Factor. Thank God!

ALoS is measured as a ratio. When the ALoS is set at zero, everybody logged into the server is crying. When the ALoS is set at one, nothing is happening because everybody is ROFL!!! What happened to Tasra last night simply should not have happened. I submit that he was ROFL, got comfortable, and fell asleep on us.

When play exceeds the ALoS a script is triggered that causes the invisible listeners to walk up and slap the PCs they are assigned to, causing much confusion.

We're lucky in that the builders have recently added a widget for measuring ALoS. These have been hidden around the OOC Lounge and are also stationed like weapons all around the PvP Arena.

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about dying."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means lying in the ground with dirt on your face and holding your breath forever."
