Well NWN2 Has it the stores
Posted: 02 Nov 2006 08:04 AM
I purchased mine yesterday and have been working with it ever since. The graphics are great and the storyline awsome. Some low points are the inventory screen is very small and movement (it might be me mouse) is somewhat stiff.
Let me know what you all think.

Haven't got it -yet- expect to grab it today! They had regular editions, but we pre-ordered the limited edition (the full monty one), and apparently that'll be in today.

As a side-note, judging by the stores I spoke to, and the forums, it seems there might be a supply issue........ certainly as regards the limited edition..... It seems that no stores in Canada are selling the Limited edition at all, unless you pre-ordered it..... so I guess for once it might actually be "limited" heh........

From the toolset it does look awesome, and I've heard good things, the best being "It's a lot closer to Baldurs Gate and Planescape Torment than NWN1" :D

As a further note, it's not released at ALL in Europe yet, so keep quiet!

Those who ignore this will be subjected to the following punishment currently being considered by the DM Team (or me anyway:P). You have been warned!

Picked up my copy yesterday and was happy I had put a preorder in. The shop I grabbed it from only got a small amount of copies and they were all spoken for.

And I also find movement a bit stiff, at least the little that I have monkeyed with it so far. Might just be that Im expecting it to drive the same way NWN1 did.

Well.
In Typical Bioware Fashion, the Storyline for NWN 2 imo has been somewhat....meh.
I'll let you judge for yourselves.
I'm most impressed by how they've expanded on alot of capabilities and functions that look like they will really help multiplayer persistant worlds. Including whole new ways of approaching certain classes like Bards, as well as lists of new classes/prestige classes (which I won't spoil for you).

The good news:
All of your favorite music and sounds from NWN 1 have found its way into NWN 2. Thats right, ALL the Voice-sets and ALL the Music from NWN 1 is in NWN 2 - with a few new additions (Is this good or bad? You decide).

I think the Vives dev team, will find a great deal more tools , utilities, and flexibility to use in their creation of Vives 2. I can't comment on the Multiplayer yet, since the patcher is broken - and noone is really able to play yet - same patcher that includes the DM Client so I can't check that out either....in more typical bioware fashion (Patches Break bioware software).

It'll be both enjoyable, and a trip down memory lane for those who purchased the original NWN during its release.

This is the first bad thing I've heard about the story. Also, I doubt it's typical bioware fashion since bioware didn't make the game.

Mine came in the mail Wednesday, but I wasn't in a hurry to go get it from the mail (got it last night, Thurs) since my Laptop shouldn't be able to support it. I did get the special edition release so I have cool pewter rings saying I'm either Chaotic Evil or Lawful Good with the Little Nevewinter Eye on them, to boot. That's kinda fun: Finally I have a ring to show the level of committment I've put into this game. I think I'll wear it on my left ring finger.

Meh, I'm gonna try to install it anyways, but expect to see me on Vives1, since I expect it to be an excercise in futility... until they release a patch for us laptop users.

Well, the quality of the storyline is obviously objective. I personally, have not been impressed - but atleast I definatley feel like I got my money's worth, as opposed to the two Nwn "Expansions".

NWN 2 definatley overs a huge variety of design tools, and the art and graphic design is beautiful enough that it can really help a persistant world feel its true roots out. As I said before, I think the Dev's will have a field day.

This is one of the most important thing to me, but it may be a small deal to other people:

NwN2 lets you alt tab all around, and isn't a pain in the arse when you do it. IE, with NwN1, when I alt tab around, it'll bring NwN1 back up within a couple windows whether I like it or not. NwN2 doesn't have this issue. (If I'm making myself understood.)

First impressions.

Well, it looks lovely, no doubt about it, but ......... *rant follows*

Why can we not craft clothes, why do familiars stand and watch you die and never engage the enemy.
Why does the map cover a quarter of the screen, why does that stupid mini-map reappear as you pass a transition?
Why have they made the NWN quickslots into an unweildy awkward thing.
Why does the camera move so slowly, why is the zoom almost useless, even with incrimental moves on the slider it is useless. You can go shopping while it zooms in from a distance on slow settings, and on the faster ones you go from horizon to being up her left nostril in a nanosecond.
Movement, its worse. Ok, so they turn on the spot more realistically, but walking???? When they did the walk animation did they ask a girl to stick a walnut up her backside and cross the room without it falling out??
Why have the pointer move your view if it happens to stray to the top of the screen? I do walking about using clicks a long way ahead, now all I get to see is if she had dandruff or not.
The inventory ........ they call that 'usable'? And the spell quickcast thingy? Why can it not be moved out of view to the bottom of the screen? Every other box you open can be dragged, except that one.

*calms down*

But it does look wonderful, I can play it on max settings, and apart from one area where my companion seemed to be having a siezure, no problems.

The perfect game? NWN, but looking like NWN2 IMHO

Sorry, but NWN has the edge

Pros:
Graphics are pretty even though I don't meet all the system requirements it runs smooth enough.
Whole new slew of spells, abilities, feats.
Hasn't crashed on me once.
GUI is more or less easy to learn.
Campaign is linear, but not too much so there's sidequests and whatnot to do. There's also some choice as far as how you do things according to your alignment.
Quickspell menu is neat.

Cons:
Camera's wierd, gotta play with the settings.
No more radial menu.
You can't highlight targets, afaik, so it's more difficult to target npcs.
I haven't figured out how or if you can customize armor/weapons.
Can really feel the resemblence to Kotor when playing the campaign.
Some spells (magic missile) have clipping issues.
Not enough physical customization of character on creation. So far as I've found.

Summation:

It's new, it's pretty, but sequels never add up to have the same spice as the original. Alot of the gameplay seems to be mixed and matched from Neverwinter Nights, and Knights of the Old Republic. They haven't actually made characters more customizable, just prettier. There's permanent subraces, so you can be drow *flat*. Overall it's a decent game, worth the money and will hopefully improve as time goes by.

Humbly,

I was really disappointed with the fact that all the sounds are basically just borrowed from NWN1. I was expecting some new, really great voicesets and music, and I'm forced to listening to the same stuff I have been for three years. It kind of throws me off, and makes me keep thinking I'm not playing a new game.

Honestly, though, I really like it. The story is great, the controls are awkward (but I think that's just because I'm used to NWN1's controls, I stand confident that I'll master them), the graphics are gorgeous, and character creation is really nice. It'll probably be a while until you guys see me again.
