To the Party that mostly met their untimely end in the wintery lands.

1/ When you are in the middle of a hostile encampment... that is not the time to take 8 hours out to rest

2/ When you hear the sounds of reinforcements arriving... that is not the time to wait for more and more to arrive, but rather to react before the dire situation becomes even yet more dire

Had this been a sanctioned P&J Tour. You woud have been home safe and sound. Dont forget.....P&J Tours are the only Tours endorsed by three gods, four lichs, two ancient great wyrms, seven mad mages , and one kobald. Thats P&J Tours folks located in the lovely lower Port right next to Scrap Alley. Once again thats P&J Tours. Youve tried the rest...now die with the best!

Hehe... *raises hand as lone survivor* I had a blast on that actually... it ended up feeling like a sort of Night of the Living Dead moment... everyone turning on each other (the pissy minstrels were certainly helping with this). I was sorry I had to rush the departure at the end (a 6:30am UAT meeting loomed, and is just now starting)... it would have been great entertainment to watch us all stand around and bicker and debate as the growing army steadily broke in and smote us.

But as it was, I was happy to just run my invisible, caffeine-ridden butt out of there.

Well I would like to apologize for my sudden log out last night. It looks like I just missed the carnage. It was 1:30 am my time, the baby woke up as well as my wife. Needless to say I had a little screaming match of my own. I will be looking forward to logging into a complete mess. I hope I can a least -SEE- my character before the barbarian chieftain slaughters her. Poor girl just can't catch a break. Be raised as a pit fighting-slave, making a horrible deal with a demilich/undead god, and now being held captive by the barbarian horde for who knows what purposes. I guess that’s just a day in the life of Vives.

*tear* God I love it.

You know, I learned something important today...

I learned that no matter how much your husband whines about needing to be up early in the morning, you should always finish the quest. 'Cause it's not *that* you die that's important, it's *how* you die.

I wanted to try the "Okay, let's disguise ourselves and go out to meet them, dragging Opie and Tomi's 'body'" trick. That would have been a hilarious way to be brutally slaughtered.

*Karli steps forward, holding one of Tomi's "lifeless" arms*

Polar bears are the most aggressive bears on earth. Once a bear decides you're going to be its lunch, you better have monk's speed or other ways to get away from them.WinkIt's a bear, not a kitty cat. :P

Another alternative is to poke it in the chest with a long spear when it stands up, then step back. If you do it right, the bear will drop to all fours a moment, then stand up again. Poke the bear again, then step back. Repeat until the bear dies.

I think you have to be Inuit to pull this off. I saw a film of this hunting practice. Quite amazing.

Of course I do not recommend trying this yourself....

That guy in the film might have been an epic ranger.

Okay, I get that bears are the largest carnivores on earth, and that they charge at speeds faster than a human can run, and that they have great hearing, are very intelligent, and are seriously badd-a$. All I'm saying is; does there have to be four or five of them in a single tiny zone?! Aren't bears supposed to be hugely terriorial? Like, one per zone is totally suffificent to scare me, I promise. *whine, b!tch, moan*

If you know there are bears around (and they're hard to miss, kind of), either

a) you don't go there

b) you make sure you can handle it or those with you can

c) you make sure they can't see, hear, smell, feel and mindread you.

As to the territorial thing... well many things can't be translated IG. Suck it up, grin and nod! ;)

a) I didn't have a choice at the time.

b) My stupid invisibility spell wore off 'cause I got lost on the strange map.

c) See above.

I'm sucking it, I'm sucking it... uh.. *cough* You know what I mean. But still! That's a (*bleep*) load of bears.

I dont think the bears are too tough personally. I actually dont think there is anybody who could walk up to a bear with a sword or dagger and kill it (aside from chuck norris of course) without massive massive skills with the weapon. And to kill a few on the way to town like its an everyday thing just seems unrealistic. I agree with Pheonix on this one.

And I do agree with PD, we killed the tribe leader and found an angry mob outside. Not a good time to rest. I shoulda listened to tomi when he said "I dunno 'bouts yas but I can hide. I ain' gots no pro'lems wit' dat". Instead I ended up getting peed on and buried like a bone by a wolve in a shallow yellow-snow grave. Lesson learned ... hide tomi!

In the interest of realism: DM put about 14 more bears in the area where Marlena keeps getting eaten. Sounds like a great place for a bear to get a meal. Ever seen the footage of the rivers in Alaska when the salmon are running? The region is swarming with the cuddly little omnivores.

Stop feeding the bears!

*nods* He would indeed, Steven Colbert is right about bears... they are one of the single greatest threats faced by civilisation today... ask marlena if you don't believe me.

I had no idea my in game angst toward the bears would cause so much discussion. I wasmostly upset because, if I must die (and it seems I must) then I'd like to go in a more.. dramatic way, than just constantly being mauled to death by bears. Then agin, it's a nice running gag, like Brent and the panda on PVP.

Seriously though,

For those who were trapped, let me tell you what I had in mind on escape opportunities:

Given that the party had wandered through some (not all) of the village and slaughtered everything, it should not have been surprising that someone might have noticed and raised an alarm, so reinforcements were brought in

I sent a couple of tells, and 1 emote in the roundhouse to let the party know this was happening.

After the first tell, the first opportunity would have been to escape right then and there. There was nothing there that could have stopped the party from running... However, they were trapped by their own discussions and after about 20+ RL minutes, escape by an outright run because extremely difficult because of the creatures that eventually arrived.

At that point, it might have been possible to parley. There was at least one player who was capable of making it past the barricade and perhaps approaching the one who could be negotiated with. It was even mentioned as an option at least two times and then dismissed.

Which then left the option of "clever escape". If the party had scouted out the barricade, they could have found a path of "least resistance" and then make their escape that way. The party could have come up with a plan that could have save all?most? of the party members.

As it was, the plan that was executed caused one bard to get lost and eaten by bears. Another escaped and left everyone behind (Welcome to the order of the Brave Sir Robin!), another had escaped, but turned back into the battle. Another had escaped, but chose the wrong time to exit the building but unfortunately got caught in an AOE death spell. As to the last player, well, it was a magnificent stand.

At that point it was over unless the one surviving bard had decided to go for help to mount a rescue mission, or the players had a miraculous escape (e.g. respawn).

The one surviving bard, still invisible, just grabbed the fallen bard and made back for Icy Vale. Didn't think twice about the fallen party members, beyond "Friggin' idiots".

Ah, the joys of CN.

Not to poke at any sore points, but is there a reason we're being lectured about this?

It's more saying "I did not do this to just kill your characters" as it is what DMs often get accused of.
