Some Possible Directions on Voice, and NPCs Posted: 16 Aug 2003 04:38 AM |
The Voice-Summoning Widget seems to be working well - both non-intrusive and following properly enough to give us a good coverage of voice at all times. It'll be kept optional as of now, but this opens up a variety of options on our regular NPCs (since we no longer need to let the emote-RacialLanguage-interpretor hog the listening spot)...
One of the interesting possibilities is an interface allowing DMs to customize creatures while in-game. They will be able to store a variety of information on the NPC (Tag-based) which will be DB-driven, and easily customizable / retrievable eventually.
(I'm getting quite tired now... but some of the potential usages include NPCs just going around, spreading rumors / speaking news / trash-talking / general ambience things, or goblins that have their own unique battlecry... I'm merely tossing the possibilities out here, feel free to add on / critique in a constructive manner) |

Not completely sure if this is the right thread but hey correct me if i'm wrong :-P Anyway, what I like to see is some more shops or rooms to enter in the big cities. Alot of houses there with doors u can open but no transition behind it. Now not all rooms need to be so worked out or big as the excisting ones in my oppinion. Just small chambers with a merchant or NPC in it would do. It's just more fun and gives the PC a more citylike idea i guess. So i've been thinking about some possible 'NPC's', which could fit in these small rooms. They should have some conversation ofcourse, maybe based on race or class... or what Ari suggest above or something.
Anyways this is what i've come up with sofar: Port Royale (+that second Port area):: -Blackmarketeers; some shady merchants, which could indentify and buy up some of ur stuff. -'Chinese styled' Tea Shop; u can sit and buy/drink teas here. -Fish store; it is a port! -Some Sea explorers home; (Jaques Cousteau-ish or something)
M'gok Tukar:: (i know that Ara was going to add some merchants but) -a Shaman/Healer; don't forget one of those Ara ;)
Furter:: -Shoe Shine Shop; for 'imaginary' shoe polishing -Armor Wash; something like a Car wash, but than for ye Armor (for those snobbish Midor knights!) -Maybe a warehouse -An Oracle; some babbling old lady -Barber Shop; 'imaginary' hair and/or mustage clipping! -a Paper Press(?) shopp/room; where those newspapers are being printed.. - some more Nobles stable's; knights have horses no?
that's what i got for now.. Sug.

What IS the Voice Summoning Widget? I've tried it out and it doesn't seem to do anything.
It must not be made for PC characters, so why do we have it in our inventories?
Just curious.
Thanks! |

It enables your PC to talk in his or her native tongue.
when Loli says her morning prayers, I use that and then she says
/dm [Thank you Bregodim .... stuff]
which is rendered in Dwarvish for any listeners. |

Many of the IG functionality such as racial languages, summons voices and emotes require a NPC to be within earshot. This utility will cause a non-intrusive, invisible NPC to follw you around so that there will always be a NPC within earshot.

Except that the dang thing opens doors again behind you ... *growls*
So I always relog after I use it. |

Agreed that it's not perfect. I am hoping HotU provides other, better options.

Okay, thanks for the update.
BUT... so how do I use it? I "used" it on myself and it did nothing. Tell me exactly how to use it, will you, please?
As I am a bard, this could be a great thing to know. I would be most greatful.
Later. |

| To use it, simply use it and target the ground somewhere around you. You only need to use it once per login as the 'Listener' will follow you around. You can then make use of the Voice Emotes, Racial Languages, and Summon Speak. The instructions for all these are somewhere in the Essential Information Forum (I think I pinned thems so they should be near the top). |

| If I was to suggest anything, it is the addition and correction of the npc characters in town and such. In most of the smaller towns, paws and brandibuck vale, there is no where to get supplies or such. In Brandibuck there is no food, how can a town have an Inn and no food. I agree with above, make the structures less and more npc interaction, it makes the game much more interesting. |
So a cleric, a ranger, and a thief walk into a bar, which one am I?

Paws does have a shop, Memuir who sells all the basics a town/adventurers would need.
Though a store in Brandibuck would be a welcome addition; I havn't found one there yet. Though; admittedly; I've not spent a lot of time there.
Ferein doesn't sell food either. And if you're staying there for a while as a base for your adventures, Icy Vale is a long and difficult walk away =P

Brandibuck does have, however, the only functional baking oven in Vives. Roast yourself some meat, from one of those pigs.
And maybe we could have functional ovens elsewhere, also. ;) |

| There is one other location with baking ovens, though it is more remote and only accessable to certain classes. As we start to finally get a handle on all this CNR stuff, I'm sure we can figure out some other places from baking ovens. |
