Just a little tid-bit for you folks, Vives is a place of grand adventure and challenge, and as such, dying is a rather harsh thing (Though something you can still bounce back from). To aid you in your exploration and starting out in the world, a small few pointers to you when embarking upon this brave new world:

*Try to roam in partners or a small group whenever possible. While many lower level areas are neutral (With nice exploration experience :D), there do lie some dangers "off the beaten path".

*Head to the larger cities/capital cities in your first few days. Rumor has it that Midor has many problems within their city, so ask around and check out if any of its humble citizens need help within the city...

*Above all, remember to have fun and enjoy the roleplay atmosphere. We DM's are watching, and reward the good folks :D

Another little tidbit to go along with Fen's advice...

It's quite possible to advance a couple of levels without ever having to fight... I'd recommend exploring as much as possible carefully, before venturing out into the great unknown...

As Fen alluded to above, good RP is also rewarded, so theoretically you could advance a character withut ever leaving a city!

Question Authority!

Starter Character Question
Posted: 28 Jul 2003 10:20 PM
Where is it that the characters start? I was writting up my history and wanted to put some correct verbage? starting city in any etc...

Is it best to post the history some place to have a DM review/okay it?

Looking at the religions I was going towards a Cleric of Theus.

Thanks

All characters begin their travels at Fourwinds Inn near Port Royale (see the map in PHBWink)... The characters need not be from Port Royale tho (most aren't), and have a selected choice (basically all the named places in the PHB are available). As a non-Midoran cleric, Midor won't be the best choice I'd saySmiley... (unless you want some serious preaching by ArizzleTongue out)

As a matter of fact I did -- logging in would put me right back at the login prompt.

The same had previously occurred with Neverwinter Connection's site, and I solved it in the same way; by adding the site to the list of trusted sites in Internet Explorer.

Tools, Internet Options, Security, Trusted sites, Sites..., and add http://vives.dyndns.org/vives to the list. (Possibly switch off HTTPS server verification.)

Cheers,
Mal

I had been thinking of trying woodworking as a craft for my druid. Unfortunately, a druid cannot equip the woodcutters axe required to harvest wood.

Would it be possible to have an axe that can be equipped by characters that cannot use martial weapons or should I just find another craft and consider this one a bad choice for druids?

Need itam!

Idwiz... I would think a druid by nature would not ish to chop down trees... perhaps that is just my take on a druid, I suppose they -could- see it as simply helping to mold nature into a different form, not really tearing apart the balance... but anyway, yeah I think a druid would most likely not want to chop down trees to make stuff... However, the idea of an axe that does not require a martial weapon proficiency is a decent idea. Because I mean anyone -can- go out and chop on a tree with an axe. Whether you are good at it is a different question, and so you could incure attack and damage penalties, or perhaps get less, or lower quality wood. Hmmm... alright that's my thoughts.

Do you really need to chop down an entire tree to woodcraft?

It seems to me you could "harvest" wood from trees to make things such as arrows, bows, staves.

This would easily fit into the druid mindset.

yeah.. i think that if you actually RP it..
and take few branches at a time... saying these are 'dead' branches..
as well as saying you cut the 'sick' parts of the tree.. and use them for something else..
that aint that .. well.. 'fine' RP.. but it is something if you wanna woodcraft...

So what would be good "roleplaying" crafts for a druid character? Certainly not many would tinker, smelt, weaponsmith, armorsmith, tailor (killing animals). Seems druids, like anyone else should have a viable roleplaying opportunity to participate in craft skills. Or would druids everywhere rely on other people for all their goods and never take up a craft skill?

Just curious what you guys think.

I happen to agree with Idwiz. I never really brought it up before, as wasnt ever really intrested in the woodworkings skill, since as a half-elf, she couldn't use bows. I think it would be nice for woodworking, to have a non-martial required axe, if its possible.

Also, I would have to dissagree with Calmeir regarding what a druid wouldn't do when it comes to chopping down a tree. Obviously, no Druid would condone the useless destruction of nature, if thats what it was. But, Druids need shields (not metal ones of course) and staves and clubs. Infact, I believe, in PnP, it is even possible for a Druid to enchant bark in a way it can be used as a heavy armour. Also, a Druid would not have any major issues with the killing of an animal to use its pelt for a leather armour. The important thing for a Druid, would be that it is not wholesale slaughter, the taking of a tree here and there (and I believe its not chopping down a tree, but chopping off a part of the tree which will grow back, at leats thats how I see it), or the death of an animal (which is inevitable anyways) would not be an issue as long as it does not affect the Balence of nature.

Edit: Wow.. lots of posts after Calmeirs while I was writting this, and working. I would think that my reasoning above would cross over to the use of animal's in tailoring, and as a bonus with this tailoring tradeskill, you can work with cotton as well, in the future, (after sug is done with it) I imagine there will be lots that can be done with just cotton. As to other Tradeskills, I think the only one a Druid would be unable to participate in, moral wise, is mining/smelting/weapon and armour crafting, as metal work is not their cup of tea. Perhaps gemcutting would also fall into this category, but on that I am uncertain. One thing I would add is not all Druids are Vegan's. Infact, there is nothing Ellanesse would enjoy more than a nice Juicy steak

I also think that it would be better if you only had to have an axe on your person in order to cut wood.

(And on druids, if you cut down a tree, you plant a tree. Thats how it works IMHO)

when i think about it..
maybe there is a way to make a new craft?
something like enchanting but to wooden weapons...

I guess if this can be polished out it can be a nice craft..
and I also think there should be smaller woodcrafting/mining axes.. i think they can have a dmg penalty.. and break much easier.. but be used as -simple- weapons

Dens - just thinking.. and yes i know thinking aint healthy =P

Just one thing, it seems the Ip address given for the hackpack download in the server description is erroneous. It gives 66.30.190.230/vives..could not get anywhere with it, and I am sure it can just put many people off

If I'm writing up my chr's ground and history, is there somewhere I'm supposed to post it? I was only going to include a discription on that box on the chr sheet.

Welcome NSR. One of the other thing I could be doing is upgrading the CharismaTip to include a possibility for you folks to write a description from there, and modify it as time passes (since it's not quite the same as in a single session/campaign, here your PC is likely going to change alot during the 'gametime'.)

In any case, character backgrounds can be posted on the CharacterBackground forum.

Oh, and there's a Vives-101 session tonight! Try to make it if you can.

High hopes are that they will be regular; perhaps weekly, or twice weekly. In the future they're likely to be splitted into Vives-101, and Vives-102 (oh, in case you're still wondering, Vives is pronounced like Viva, with an 'es' trailing), focussing on Mechanics/Module, and Roleplaying/Ethos respectively. They're also likely to be much more interactive, thanks to player's suggestions!

As for when they're to be held - I don't really have an answer to that as of now (my RL is pretty hectic) If and when I get down to writing a curriculum, that'd certainly help. Ack, did I just piled more work on myself? Tongue out

It'd be great to have a run-through tutorial, like, a series of rooms with hypothetical creatures to kill, imaginary merchants to buy from, fictional landscape/common knowledge, theoretical looks of gods and idols... and what-not there, so the Vives-101 is somehow automated (or even better, have another set of areas where the Vives 101 is held regularly) It'd cut down the learning curve drastically.
