We'd shortly be able to work something with Pickpocket... from quite ground up. If you have any relevant ideas about it, please let yourself be heard here. Things you might want to talk about include...

- Who should get it? Rogues only?
- Restrictions on how often it can be used?
- Lower success rates?
- others?

Well, I'll state the obvious things here...

1. It would sure go a long way towards eliminating ooc reactions to theft if the "You just lost (item)" was not displayed on an undetected event...

2. It would be cool for the victims if the thief dropped what he stole on being killed by the victim...

There should certainly be some way to "attempt" to retrieve your lost item/s if you detect the Pick Pocket.

Attacking the thief is never justice (and probably not justified if in a town with no-weapons rules).

Also, perhaps the "You have lost an item" lines could be more explicit saying "You have detected Duke taking 5 gold" or "You were just caught with your hand in Aria's pocket...run".

I think Soulforger brought up a very good point about victim-thief relationship. Vives is not designed as a gung-ho place where might is right; to me, killing the thief seems rather distasteful for a petty crime.

The 'you have lost item' is removable, but at the expense of including dialog.tlk in the hakpak (I -think- it's another 2Mb zipped).

Since we're planning on trapping it with a widget (that is, you'd need to use a widget as the intermediary step to PP'ing), the thief would need to do the 'stick out hand in front' animation; so it might entail the thief to be trusted/hide/invis/unspotted at first place. Comments?

Will this theivery be limited to the lifting of a few coins?

I dont think killing someone who has stolen a very precious item from you would be out of the question for most characters, and should always be an option.

When your stealing from someone, theres a very big chance your going to get hurt. If you remove this possibility, it just makes pick-pocketing more tempting, and we dont want hordes of annoying thieves looting your hard earned inventory.

If a thief can take an item, there has to be a way you can get your items back by force.

Otherwise, if its just five gold or so, the need to harm the thief is substantially less, but that doesnt mean people wont attempt it.

I dont think 2MB more on top of the 100's so far Ive downloaded will deter many who've already committed to downloading the haksWinkThe generic messages should definitely be changed...

I think that the automated emote is an excellent idea.

Being able to call out to guards would be a good step, they'd know if there'd been an actual pickpocket attempt in an area and who did it. You could implement some form of dialogue emote to get their attention and throw people in jail.

Restrict what they can steal, it doesn't make sense to palm a halberd, especially with take 20 on pickpocket in combat. That ability is just wrong.

Eh?

I think you'reprobly right that theft in these days doesn not normally carry a death sentence, but in the time frame we are playing I don't think it was unheard of.

I like Zeln's idea of calling out to the guards... perhaps the detection event could bring any members of the defender faction nearby to the thief. That would make it tougher to steal in cities, while allowing a more "lawless" feel to wild areas... bottom line is if you're not in the presence of guards and you do detect the thief combat is the only alternative to retrieving your item, as the thief currently has to voluntarily surrender it.

If I'm caught in a PP attempt and the player RP's with me, most likely I'll give the item back, but I can't guarantee that behavior from all rogues. :)

Landru is correct...often theivery was either A) Death or B) Maiming in the time frame Vives is in (unless we want this world much different)...haha, maiming would be funny if caught stealing (No off-hand weapons, no ambidexterity, -2 str/dex), otherwise some ideas I found good were 1) Zeln's calling of the guards, and 2)Some way to avenge the loss or get your items back...

I personally find theiveing rogues to be fun, and can be fun for all if played correctly. Correctly is NOT stopping PP, but being responsible with it, most often the problem lies in people just mad OOC they lost a neat item. Either way, I think PP in a city should be called by the guards, followed by jail time of, say, a day IG, plus a fine of 500 gold (whatever gold is not there, XP is taken out due to serious whippings :P)...

Out of town...well, that's your problem :P
