Re: Monk Equipment Posted: 13 Feb 2004 07:36 PM |
I used to play a monk, though for several reasons I couldnt keep playing it, Unfortunately all my effords to bring some monkish items, and some decent home for monks were in vain.... It is not easy to find monk equipment, only few had the chance to get their hand into them...Seek Asashi monastery, and with luck, you'll get some guidance.. It deeply sadness me to make this post....

| Why does the monk always get the shaft? Whats the deal. Where is the love people? At least put in some equipment of equal "magical" nature to the ridiculous amount of shileds, armor and weapons around for all the other fighting classes. |

I wouldnt complain..it is true that finding monk items is VERY dificult, most of the monk items are DM rewarded, but having a merchant with at least some low level items...would be nice. And maybe think about some quests to test our new monks in their path..it seems to me Vives monks are walking very away from their path of wisdom and humble... |

Im talking about playability. I love the monk. I love the roleplay - for those of you in game who have met me you know - but if Im a constant burden on my fellows and cant at least pretend to keep up with those of similar level, it seems wrong.
This is an ooc post. It wouldnt be happening IC. |

Re: Monk Equipment Posted: 14 Feb 2004 12:50 AM |
| Playability? All classes are playable. If you mean, can a level 3 monk do as much damage as a level 3 fighter, of course not. But as for playability, there are just as many options as any other class. Levels come in time, take the time between them to rp your character and focus on his storyline, moral code, ethics, and such. For me its about rp. A level one monk can have as much impact in the storyline of this world as a level 20 monk. When we start focusing on exp and equipment we drift away from roleplaying...at least in my opinion. |

Re: Monk Equipment Posted: 14 Feb 2004 12:51 AM |
my ingame character must be rubbing off on me because Im about to reply to myself:
Lets review:
The monk has: low ac, low damage, low critical threats, a limited amount of useable armor / weapons / items, one extra attack which fighters/paladins/rangers can get in a variety of ways, good saving throws and probably some hiding skills. in this world, my stun attack has worked maybe 3 out of 50 times.
/rant off.
This is not a request for phat lewt or uberness. Just fairness.
I have been wrong in the past. Call me crazy and lock me up. Just looking for additional comments / feedback. |

Re: Monk Equipment Posted: 14 Feb 2004 02:27 AM |
Monks start off slow but get a lot better at later levels. That's always been the way. Even in PnP monks are EASILY the most useless char in combat at a low level. However, they carry their own at later levels. In NWN, monks are CONSIDERABLY more whoop-arse than in PnP. Monks are especially good in a mod with a low level of items like Vives, because they don't have to rely on items, and the level progression isn't so slow that it hinders them too much in my opinion.
Hmm... maybe I'll make a monk as my next char... |

Re: Monk Equipment Posted: 14 Feb 2004 01:55 PM |
On Monks...
I do agree. I enjoy monks, although my characters have never walked the 'monk' path for long. A monk in Vives is actually fantastic specifically because of the low magic world....
Monks know that life isn't fair. They are frail and fragile in the beginning. It's only after spending drastic amounts of time to learn their craft that they grow in power.
So a higher level monk takes a LOT more work to get there. But next to a higher level anything else (yes, even bard *grin*) Monks are powerful opponents indeed!
So a low level monk must rely on kindness and help from others as they seek their path of wisdom. But through time, they will become one with theirself and become Jet Li!

Re: Monk Equipment Posted: 14 Feb 2004 02:39 PM |
"next to a high level anything else":
I've played a high level monk and sorceror. My friend has played paladin and cleric. Any of those three classes are still 4x better than the monk at high level, and much easier to play at lower ones.
The sorceror has a familiar to fight for him and spells to give him protections. The paladin can wear armor and a shield, the cleric can wear armor and a shield and cast spells.
IMHO your logic is skewed. I don't mean this disrespectfully, but I know what I'm talking about. I don't want to start a whats the better character debate here however. I was just asking for some monk equipment to try to make it a little more fair all around.
Monk is a joy to play and I will contune to do so. |

There is a lot more to each class than just that Rasputin. For example, monks are extremely strong vs magic users. Monks can't normally go toe-to-toe with a fighter or barbarian, but they have other advantages like move silently, hide, and tumble, increased movement speed, spell resistance and huge saves. In my opinion, the monk is an excellent all-rounder class that, at higher levels, comes close to fighters and barbs in combat performance, but suffer none of the weaknesses those classes suffer from. |

Re: Monk Equipment Posted: 15 Feb 2004 02:17 AM |
A 12th level monk can pretty well handle himself, and can do a lot of things solo that other classes cannot.
It is well worth the stuggle to get to that point.
