| Well the first 3 are a bit much, i mean with those penalties i'd never use a familiar. Basically the last one is most plausible but familiars arnt really that great. Putting a huge penalty on em just makes em worthless. |

Familiar XP penalties Posted: 30 Jun 2003 12:37 AM |
| Ok, i've played a mage since before this penalty and alot of other things were fixed about familiar. But since this 3% penalty was added it basically makes familiars useless for a number of things. Being as how they how low hitpoints they tend to die easily. I've tried having it only guard me. Fight behind another summon, parting, etc. The only thing that works and doesnt make me slowly (or quickly) lose all the XP i gain is not using it ever. Even unsummoning isnt worth the effort because lets face it, its not worth it to use it and risk losing 3% total xp. I'd rather have a 99% hp loss when it dies then that xp penalty. |

Other ideas up in the air are
[i:e7bc998a1e]- Caster death unless survives a fort save
- Permanent CON loss
- (when Aging is implemented) Caster Aging
- 1% XP Penalty, 50% HP loss[/i:e7bc998a1e]
All these are easily implemented and I don't care either way. Just don't want to see the casters sending their summons to gung-ho. |

My suggestion would be:
1% XP loss 50% Caster HP loss 1-2 RL days before can Familiar can be resummoned |

I would tend to gravitate toward the fort save vs. death. Let's face it, a familiar shares a -very- close bond with the caster. It would be much like a father/son bond...and would you send your toddler off to battle to absorb magic missles so you could shoot arrows or cast magic with less risk to yourself? The way familiars are played in NWN thus far has been very different from the PnP uses of the familiar. They are the casters friend, scout, and travelling companion... not meat shield.
The problem then is keeping your familiar safe when going into potentially hostile situations. I propose that familiars are able to be called forth unlimited times per day, but HP are persistent. If that's possible. Thus, a caster could "store" his familiar (much like BG2) when the situation becomes potentially hostile.
Just my 2c. oh, I like the idea of 1 or 2 RL days before being able to summon again.

Playing a Spellchucker for the first time, I have come to realise that failiars are all but useless against anything other than Kobolds, and think the current penalty is a tad harsh.
Personally I was perfectly happy with the way the system worked. Maybe just a higher hp penalty to the caster, but i'll go with the flow on this one.
Cheers

Personally I would rather see an HP penalty and perhaps a SHORT TERM con loss of maybe 2 points (2 makes a good diff.). In PnP D&D, you lost both hp and exp, but in PnP the familiars have quiet a bit more to them, and die a LOT less easily. SInce this isn't PnP, the standard rules I think sould be bent to something less harsh, like only hp and con (temporarily). It'd be neat too if you could somehow wipe all level 1 spell slots or something of that nature to simulate the magical energies of death backlashing into the mage :-P

Fen's suggestion sounds like a fair compromise... persistent issues are consuming to script in, as are the 'RL days' suggestions.
With due respect to everyone's opinions... would the following be a good choice? We can always try it out.
[i:f172945e1d]- 1% XP loss - 50% HP loss (of current XP) - Fort. save vs. Death, or temporarily -2 CON[/i:f172945e1d] |
