1.I agree
Posted by Kell on 6/30/2003 12:37:07 AM
In attempting to start a new character on Vives, I have found much the same thing. Even having gone through these formative stages, doing it again is almost impossible.

I believe the main reason for this is because characters of middling range have the focus and the needs of new characters have been forgotten.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when finally getting into Vives your immediate choices in adventuring are rats, and kobolds. Rats, singularly are no real threat but, ...

The first thing you'd want to do is integrate with society and build some sort of plausible background for your character.

You cannot do this from simply going out the gates and running through each area gathering an average of 50XP per area (which seems to be size dependant). And as was stated, you can't do this because monsters out there hack you to bits in 3 hits tops :P

I don't think encouraging weak characters to go charging around the countryside is logical at all. ...

Characters who have their ConModifier reduced past -1 assumed to have 0?

Your right about the whole bleeding timeframe giving parties a chance to heal their members.

I think she meant "natural stabilization".

"Spread abilities associated with each craft" - so not so dependant on intelligence anymore? So wizards have lost one of their "bonuses" that justified sorcerors (only?!) being able to teleport?

Also, could we get a list of haks we should be using now? My directory is filled with a dozen or so files and I'm not sure if they are all pertinent. This could pose a problem if an area I build uses one of these when its not supposed to..
7.Text Spam
Posted by Kell on 6/30/2003 12:37:06 AM
With relation to all the text that just pops up on your screen, I hope that these "OnPerceive" triggers have a random chance of actually occuring in the first place. Ie, perhaps one in a hundred? Doesnt sound like much at all, but when you have dozens of playing running through these perception radii, the text spam just gets out of control.

This is also happening with area entry descriptions. Now, I like them, but I dont even think they are a requirement. The idea of a ...

In response to your idea Aria,

I assume that the amount of time that this whisper appears for is based on how much text is in the whisper and isn't directly accessible?

Therefore, depending on two main variables, the speed of the area loading, and the differing times people move through area transitions, people lagging behind may miss out on the message entirely, or see it for only a split second...? Worse yet it may not show it to them at all as they were not ...

It should be called Scribing?

In order to scribe a scroll you have to be of a class of whom can describe and notate the arcane/divine energies into a structured means.

So sorceror's especially (finally something those dang sorceror's don't get better than wizards) wouldn't get this. Druids, paladins and rangers are debateable but I doubt it. I'd say it'd be limited to clerics (form of prayers), wizards (arcane) and bards alone (sonnets and such).

Scribing would ...

Umm excuse me..

but there is absolutely no logical reason that either SORCERORS or ROGUES would be able to SCRIBE at ALL.

Rogues can read magic by deciphering it and taking some time in order to do it. Sorceror's cannot put "gut feeling" and "innate" ability onto parchment.

There's your balance. And I'm sick of hearing this "sorcerors don't get as much XP as Wizards" bellyaching bullcrap. Tough!!! if you pick a sorceror, thems the ...

I am sick of this mentality that you need to balance out all the player character classes so that they each have their advantages and disadvantages and that the "baddy classes" (Clerics and Wizards, constantly getting picked on here, my favourite classes to ROLEPLAY) are getting shafted.

These concerns should be absolutely trivial when it comes to ROLEPLAYING. Personally I dont give a dang if another class has some sort of PvP or BORGING advantage over my class. No-one ...

Well personally I'd prefer no-one had it than classes that have no right to it.
13.Gems and Enchanting

Disclaimer: I have been away (apathetic) for a while, so I may not have all the facts, however these are my opinions based on what I have seen of these forums so far.

Sorry to rain on the "Ore's, Gems and their POWERS (crafting related)" parade, however I don't think such typical and commonplace gems should have any latent magical energy ...

There are two issues:

Allowing OOC chat in talk and whisper modes of which I'm firmly against (give players an inch and it will become a mile).

And scouts warning their party using party channel of dangers.

Given the example about the party travelling the many miles, with a scout just ahead ready to run back with information - I don't see why everyone who is in the party... who could be waiting on the other side of the transition, or who could be half way across ...

No I haven't partied with "Finfalin", but I would say those who roleplay scouts are the exception rather than the rule. If players can take the easy option of just broadcasting whether its safe or not to proceed over the party channel, then they wont bother to RP actually going back and warning the party.

Personally, I see examples like "Go in and see if there are baddies" as meta-gaming. Its not like monsters "go out now and then to check for goodies", and your using a game mechanic (area transition) to keep your character safe from anything that may be lurking.

When your looking at having scores of players, the type of chatter you (Gwindor) cite as feasible on the party channel will clog the DM chat lines utterly, and thus you contradict your opening ...

So you feel the need to spam the DM's with this trivial stuff? I've been on and its bad enough trying to keep track with just five players using the party chat... try 40.. 50?

And I don't care about your dog :P

I don't see anyone walking around areas and calling back "Its safe". Everyone does go blindly raging through for safety of numbers.

If you want someone to scout ahead, they should scout ahead and return with the information.

An area transition is not like your opening a door and looking outside unless, thats exactly what your doing (ie, in a building in a city) but in these situations you rarely need to shout back "Its safe".

In the ...

Its my understanding that the channels are something beyond the scope of disablement, just like Tells or any other channel for that matter.

If players are told that DM's can hear whatever they are party chatting, and that the party line is only used for specific roleplaying circumstances and events (of which DM's like myself will be more than interested in) then it:

a) shouldn't get out of hand
b) will allow DM's to keep a tab on the "pulse" of roleplay ...

My opinion on concensus emotes...
(of which there is a more fundamental matter)

As a roleplaying rule in general - ie, Players, builders, scripters, cast player characters, DM's, everyone. You should never dictate to another player their actions, reactions or feelings (especially negatively) in anyway.

Scripts shouldn't make characters say things like "This place is creepy!" (Midor burial grounds) or "I want to be like Kell Larithian!" (although ...
