if not a Ranger, then who?
Posted: 03 Jan 2004 07:07 PM
Quick question.

When I levelled my ranger last night, I got the text message showing me his various % modifiers for differing tasks.

These numbers aren't necessarily exact, but I think it was like
Quests 100%
Combat 80%
Discovery 70%
Magic 25%
Crafting 50%

The question is, if a Ranger does not get 100% for discovery, who does? Seems to me this would be a ranger's bread and butter.

On a small aside, shouldn't a ranger get experience for using animal empathy, much like a Bard gains experience for his song and a rogue becomes experienced for picking locks?

Thanks
Mike

I COMPLETELY agree Rangers should get 100% xp for discovery. Aye, bards do, but it makes just as much, if not even MORE sense, for Rangers to get 100%. At least from my perspective from the mystic and basic principles of Ranger RP.

The people responsible have been sacked. (Read: It'll get tweaked once Ara's done with the mod)

I'd have to think about it and look into how easily it could be accomplished. We've discussed many times elsewhere about the various pros and cons to all/some/none of the skills granting XP. One (but not the only) limiting factor is my bandwidth, sadly.

We already discussed xp for animal empathy once. The general opinion was: NO

You need to draw a line somewhere, or give xp for every skill which seriously complicates the balance issue. Also animal empathy gives you an ally, useful for that, I'd hate to see rangers going on an empathy spree just for the xp.

The less xp for skills and the more for Rp, the better. And using a skill is NOT by default Rp. Sometimes it is the opposite, killing Rp since it prevents people to imagine how they can express a certain action through a pose to make it clear to someone else.

And if it in some way contributes to Rp they can get xp for that, on a DM basis.

Why can't I PM myself?

Don't iron out the Irony.

To be honest, I'm not all for animal empathy XP either. We do have to draw the lines at which skills give RP. Is it not enough you get a friendly animal to fight for you, or not tear your lungs out by its own claws?Tongue out.

Upon my most recent level-up, I saw the modifier was indeed 100% for exploration. Thanks a bunch!

But in a way, shouldn't you get some kind of reward for advancing in any given skill? In a way, not rewarding make the skills unimportant, useless until direly needed.

And as for balance, I think the game itself needs to create the balance. I play a little known rogue right now, and as far as I can see, no guard has even batted an eye at me, no matter what im doing. You limit lockpicking experience by making it a tough chance to take for a rogue. If its cake, you have no balance. This can apply to animal empathy, bard music, and all other special skills of a class.

I have not played any other character IG, so I can only speak from my perspective. If I am a rogue, and I find a special item, why shouldn't I gain experience for identifying that item. Do not apply it to all items, only ones that are greater/or equal in level that the characters skill level. It will take you probably a few tries to identify, maybe one, but getting 25 experience points for identifying it is nothing compared to killing one monster at a level greater to yourself. The same can be said for the low level ranger that takes the chance to catch a brown bear, and empathize it. If the bear doesn't kill em, then what is 25 experience?

I just think all skills should get some kind of reward, to create diversity, and the balance should come from in game actions and responses.

Just some thoughts....

So a cleric, a ranger, and a thief walk into a bar, which one am I?

Shortly and simply put, it's simply not possible to trap all skills in a useful fashion. Therefore, it's impossible to script rewards for all skill use.

My other opinions on the topic aside, all of the skills that can be reasonably handled have already been handled in one form or another. The rest is up to Bioware to write useful APIs.

Question Authority!
