Silly little criticism/rant Posted: 03 Apr 2007 02:40 PM |
Ok, this is soooooo not a big deal at all, but it's something I thought of a long time ago, and occasionaly when I look at it on the main page I am reminded of it...
And I'm finnaly bored enough to post something about it.
On the left side of the main webpage, there is the box for Forum Statistics... half of the info in that box is completely missleading, IMHO.
Forum Statistics 1,660 users have contributed to 5,722 threads and 57,338 posts.
Well, that's pretty straight forward.
In the past 24 hours: - 4 new threads - 26 new posts - 0 new users
yeah yeah... fine fine..
In the past 3 days the most viewed thread is Shoutouts. In the past 3 days the thread with the most posts is Shoutouts. In the past 3 days the most read thread is Player Handbook, Second Edition.
Alright, this is where the bull**it flag goes up. How is it possible that in the past three days, the most viewed thread is shoutouts, and yet the most read thread is Player Handbook, Second Edition? The website is able to read our minds and knows if we are actually -reading- the thread we open? "more people -viewed- Shoutouts.. but they didn't actually -read- it." *smirks* I've always wondered how these two things could be different.
And then there is the whole "In the past 3 days the thread with the most posts is Shoutouts." statistic... also complete bull**it. Really what it should probably say is this: Of the threads that have had new posts made in them in the last three days, the one with the most overall posts in it is Shoutouts. Because I have seen many a thread listed as the one with the most posts in the past three days, simply because the thread total is in the hundreds.. even though there may have been only one post in that thread in the actuall past three days, and a brand new thread that has had 20 or 30 posts in it in the past three days, doesn't get that title because.. well, there are only 20 or 30 posts in it total.
Top 10 most active users in past 24 hours: 1. pdwalker (5,138) 2. Barnas (3,284) 3. Sirac (2,437)
again.. what numbers is the site using to generate these statistics? cause the website seems to have its head up its....
I can guarantee you that Sirac has not been the third most active user in the past 24 hours. (no disrespect to Sirac at all... but he has left Vives, except for the occasional pop in to say hello or whatnot.. and on those occasions there is -no way- he is one of the top 10 active users for the day)
I suspect this is a similar issue as the "thread with the most posts" statistic... it's probably more like: Of the users who have logged in to the website in the past 24 hours, the ones with the top 10 most forum posts in their history is:
And why does it say top 10, and only actually list 3? *smirks*
The newest user is RUS.Hit. yeah, can't see how it could screw this up... but I even wonder about -that-. Heh
Alright.. so there you have it, my completely useless rant for the day. Enjoy. |

This forum software isn't the greatest. Those statistics have always been messed up. Another fine example would be the search function. I no longer bother with it, but use google with vives.dyndns.org in the site info so it only searches this domain. |

| I've also had stuff come up from the Admin forum when I was searching for something. You couldn't read the thread, but it would show the first few words of the post. |

Ooooh, good idea.
How do you do that exactly? just include vives.dyndns.org as one of the search terms, or some other way? |

In the google bar type this:
xaranthir site:vives.dyndns.org
Or replace Xaranthir by whatever search term you're looking for. :) |

Both of these will be fixed in v2.
