Christmas Gifts

Well, I figured since Christmas is now a distant memory (at least, for those of us with poor memory) I'd ask what sort of presents people were kind enough to give you (if any), and if any of them were just extra-special in some way. So, start listing! :P

Enough money to get some rivetted chainmail, and most of a suit of full plate.

Too old for fun presents. I got some underwear. In fact, I am happier with getting fewer gifts. The less I get the happier I am. So this was a good x-mas.

I get much more excited by the stuff I get other people. I got my wife a digital camera, and the book Princess Bride because she likes for us to read books aloud together. I got my mother in law two books because she loves to read: The Sailor from Gibraltor, and American Gods.

Heh.. and I was gonna ask where the cleric and sacraficial alter come into the picture...
Tongue out.

Seriously though, those are great gifts to get for someone who already has most everything/anything they could want.
I hate giving (or getting) knicknacks... you know, the kind of thing that looks nice (or sometimes not so nice) but ultimately serves little to no purpose... (last year we got a metal basket thingy.. that looked like santa... how do you tell people who went through the effort of buying you a gift, that everyone would really be much happier if you never recieved junk like that again? they wouldn't have to buy it, and we wouldn't have to unwrap it and inwardly gasp in horror.. and then try to find a way to get rid of it.. anyway, I'm off track..) I would much rather give a gift that is useful, and/or desired by the person.

To do that, you either have to know them pretty well, or you give them a gift card or something. But really... pretty much all of my relatives and freinds are well enough off that they can just go out and buy the things they really want/need, whenever. So we have started a habit of giving gift baskets with home made goodies in it that the wife made... (sweet breads, truffles, seedless organic blackberry jam (my personal favorite), etc..) and then giving to a charity in their name, much like that one.. where you buy a goat, or a mosquito net, or library books, or a well, or an outhouse for people who really need it.

And what person could possibly be upset that you bought them an outhouse for Christmas....
to be given to someone who desperately needs it?

Now if only the ones who give us knicknacks would get the hint... :P

My wife and I got lots of giftcards for the movies, Cold Stone (yummy ice cream!), and a few other shops. I actually bought my wife a new computer some time ago so she could play all the new games that are out there. I told her it was for her birthday, Christmas, New year, Easter and whatever else that comes after it. ;)

I got super scrabble (contains 4x word values and double the amount of letters; can you tell I'm a scrabble nerd?), two books on native North American Orchids (yes, I'm an orchidophile) and some cashmere lined gloves! Wheee. :D

I've had the joy of including a 3 year old into my life this Christmas, which made gift giving quite a bit different. I'd complain about how many batteries it takes just to get everything running properly, but I'm more infuriorated by how things are packaged. Do they really think that some kid is going to steal a remote control Cranky the Crane? What other reason would they have to encase the thing with enough twist-ties and plastic to make it darn near bulletproof. It took me 20 minutes just to get the thing out of the box!!

But in truth it was a wonderful holiday. Riley, my little man thinks Santa is the best thing ever. His mom, my fiance, got autostart put in her car plus enough John Deere embroidered clothing to keep her in style all week. I made out very well with a leatherbound, gold leaf copy of The Silmarillion, and a new pair of cowboy boots.

I'm happy its over, but I already can't wait for next year!
