Problem with Body in the Well Quest... Posted: 26 Nov 2006 06:13 PM |
I found a major problem with the Body in the Well quest, I play through being a very lawful detective till the woman pleads guilty, I am faced with three choices, none of them lawful! I know this may sound harsh, but Arthur would report her to the authorities and have her arrested, not let her slide, thats in another alignment spectrum.
To avoid losing lawlyness I just had to press escape and forward my own response. |

Not that I havn't done the quest in a while, but I'm almost certain that there used to be a "Blah blah blah, but I must report what you did" option.

Correct, there is that option to do so.

Seeing that we are on the subject....Why is searching the body in the well "Chaotic"? I think any law-abiding citizen would check the body for some sort of identification to find out who the poor soul is whose dead body was left in the well.
Just my 2-cents. |

| Maybe there should be two options. "Search the body for clues" and "Loot the body." |

Well, considering that "ID" is only a recent invention/requirement, and that during the medieval times, no one had any "id" it is not unreasonable. |

| Maybe he kept a diary. Maybe he just recieved a letter. Maybe he's a merchant and keeps a lot of reciepts and invoices. Maybe he's a Port Royale guard and has a badge, or some sort of identifying pendant or necklace or whatever that identifies him as part of a group? Maybe he has some sort of gang tattoo. Maybe he's really stupid and his mom stitched his address into his pantaloons. Maybe he's got a note that says "Meet me inside the well outside the Four Winds - Murray." |

I was under the impression that Vives followed a timeline that was somewhat different from Earth's timeline.
I mean, Earth's Dark and Middle ages made few advances as far as adventurer-friendly technology.
Vives has a gnome with a flying machine. Port Royale has (apparently) a viable sewer system that does not include dumping your wastes outside the nearest window. Most buildings are also made of stone or other worked materials, as opposed to being made mostly of wood. Dome doors haven't even been invented in Earth; yet Port Royale features one.
Also, identification has been around for quite a while: signet and crest rings identify members of royalty, importance, or wealth, for example. Scars or other marks can be used to identify someone; perhaps the adventurer would ask around for a man that has a deep scar on his left cheek. Unique family heirlooms (rings, pendants, father's lucky sox) existed, as well.
Point being, it seems silly to compare the real world to Vives as a reason.

Couple things:
In a middle ages-type context its likely that you can work out a basic identity for most people based on their attire. The body of a merchant would not be mistaken for the body of a beggar, or the body of a criminal. Priest, sailor, hunter, carpenter, miller, laborer, scribe, and yes the rich all wear their identities on the outside, so they can be seen. You can probably judge any person's class and occupation based on what they're wearing in a medieval city or in the countryside. Sherlock Holmes wouldn't touch the body, but he'd know everything about that person after ten seconds.
One document that does seem to have importance if you're sailing out of Port Royale is travel documents. That's the only thing I can think of outside of personal and business correspondence that would pass for "identification". Then there are temporary visas to Midor. But another thing... you search a body in what is basically medieval garb, what you're doing is looking/feeling underneath clothing, maybe even undressing the body to find anything hidden (i.e. valuable). Or you're opening up purses and looking inside... because guess what: no pockets!! Or again I suppose you could be checking for calluses, grooming, cause of death, and other indications Sherlock Holmes-style.
The other thing - I started thinking about runaway slave ads from colonial newspapers. Here's a couple samples that I found, from the Virginia Center for Digital History and a ton more from Baltimore County. Check out how they go about identifying these people in absence of proper ID and papers. |
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about dying."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means lying in the ground with dirt on your face and holding your breath forever."

Wow I must say that IMHO people are thinking about this too much .
A bit of history to the quest ...... When I started playing Vives the body was in the well and when you searched it (along with the chaos shift) you found a gem. There was no more to the quest IG than that. And this was generally one of the first things as a player you would come across, seeing as you start in the Four Winds and the well was just oustide. So the fact that the quest was unfinished always irked me.
So some time ago I wrote up the dialogue for the quest and other relevant information and then Ara very kindly scripted it all IG and added the characters, items and places that were needed to flesh out the quest.
I tried very hard to include dialogue options for various alignments, also a primary concern (for me) was that all of the people (including the body) would need to still be in situ when the quest was done, so there needed to be valid reasons why these things were still IG.
But back to the topic in hand ....... The searching the body & chaotic shift was put IG years ago and is a symptom of the ever-growing world that Vives is, as well as the fact that it is an amalgamation of contributions for many reasons. Some of these things are time-consuming or awkward to change, or it's just that the builders have other more-pressing (and interesting ) priorities, so these things stay IG.
So there you have it ... and I am not sure it will ever change ..... it's just one of those quirky things that is there because of the way Vives has evolved.
Hope you are all having fun here.
For those of you who remember us, Sirac and I are very well and happy. We are both very engrossed in DDO and I am busy growing a baby it's due next March and we have to decide which Vives God/NPC/Character to name it after .

I was just curious as to why the shift to Chaotic. Never thought it would go much beyond that I hope it did not come off as a complaint, as I truly enjoy the Vives experience.
So I will end this thread by saying thanks to the builders for all the hard work and thanks to all the players that bring it to life!
And eventually my character will get over the fact that he committed a "chaotic" act...LOL. |

Obviously a little late to this discussion, but I would like some feedback of the quest mentioned. Albeit messing up in the first part as far as alignment is concerned, but that is another story, the options I saw was, in my best knowledge (which is definitely not a statement of claiming to be the best):
Report her to authorities - LG shift Do not report her and let her slide - CG shift Blackmail her - CE shift
Sadly that leaves out some other combinations, whereas I would have thought
Blackmail her - E shift only Keep blackmailing her - C and possibly more E (broke agreement to hand over evidence)
Just would like some opinions, not asking for this to change or ranting but to see other's perspectives on alignment. |
