Vives-101, Oct-21st Posted: 20 Oct 2003 11:29 PM |
Event: Vives-101! - Hostess: Aria - Date/Time: Tuesday, 21st October 2003, 19:00-PST / 22:00-EST / 03:00-GMT - Duration: 2 Hours - Openings: Unlimited (New players in Vives are highly encouraged to attend) - Synopsis: This is an Out-of-Character tutorial for Vives. It composes of 4 30-minute sections... (read on for details)
(i) GadgetUsage, which introduces you to the number of widgets and wands available for Vives,
(ii) FeaturesSession, which introduces you to a number of features in Vives that you may or may not know (e.g., VoiceEmotes / Crafting),
(iii) Roleplay guidelines (e.g., what is / isn't acceptable roleplay; what the speaking channels are for), and
(iv) a brief Vives Setting Introduction.
You do not need to sign-up this time, as it seems from last session chaos isn't a large problem. The first 1/2 hour will be the gadget-talk, so for the folks who attended the last one, feel free to hop in half-hour late!

Phew - thanks to all who came! That was quite the attendence. It ran quite long as well...
We'd appreciate some feedback - how useful it is, what needs added, what did we not address... so post them here! |

Well, I had fun; it ran a bit late pour moi, but then again, that didn't keep me from attending the whole thing... I found it quite informative, giving me a few insights into my character that I couldn't gleam from reading the PHB. Thanks for allowing us to have this opportunity; I can't really think of anything to add... : /

Re: Vives-101, Oct-21st Posted: 22 Oct 2003 01:55 AM |
Would it help if the order of the sessions are switched? I'm pondering to have them in the order
(i) Background, (ii) Features & Mechanics, (iii) Gadget, (iv) Roleplaying.
I'm also pondering about a Vives-201 sometime down the road, where it'd be a small group communicating on how one could better get into the skin of a character, or just feedback sessions on where/how Vives is going.
Or 'courses' for CPC (and intending players), and DMs...

| Well, I think that it would be cool to have two different sessions, like Vives 101 and Vives 102... where 101 would be more the mechanics, and Vives 102 would be more like a background/role playing work shop. |

I'd say two would, IMHO, be the way to go.
One on the "Roleplaying on Vives" area,
and another on the "Gadgets widgets, systems (An policies?) on Vives)
Feel free to ignore this post,

Re: Vives-101, Oct-21st Posted: 22 Oct 2003 09:40 AM |
I atteneded Vives 101 last night. Alot of good information... however I have a suggestion... instead of standing around putting the information, take the new players out on a Vives 101 quest that introduces the concepts through IC roleplay.
For example... like you did with the merchant, take the players to a merchant and have a 'support DM' there to play the role of the merchant.
"I am Pequm (whatever is the merchant in Buckshire is called) and I sell junk. I don't sell shields, but I'll buy them from you. However, Ruddy in Midor is a arms and armor dealer. He'll pay you more for the shield. I will pay you less for an item if I already have some of it in stock...."
Take the players on a very small crafting excursion.. perhaps to get deer hides and to turn them into leather. Or cotton to cloth.
As far as roleplaying guidelines.. have a few experienced players attend to help show the example of how to roleplay. Perhaps have a few 'planned' roleplaying mistakes such as ":)" that the Vives narrator could correct as an example for the new players.
Hmm... creature behaviors could be introduced by taking the players to an area where they could 'encounter' an animal in a control enivornment and see how it works. That was done well last night.
Finally... reward the players that attend this with some XP. (perhaps some good rolepaying XP) and perhaps access to a few good items that maybe the merchant carries.

Not to nit-pick (as per Aria's Commandments *grin*) but what's really wrong with using instead of *smile* or more probably *smlie* or *msil*? I don't use it myself, but I don't get bent out of shape if someone else uses it. Yes, I know it is Internet shorthand, but do we really need to speak Elizabethian English in order to pretend we are someone else? And is it any more distracting than decoding typing done in a hurry? |

Re: Vives-101, Oct-21st Posted: 22 Oct 2003 10:00 AM |
I agree with Slink on that.
Whilst in my time I've played characters "Whom have taken it upon themselves that, in order to come across as both of good education and standing, have been inclined to speak in a most formal manner", I don't think that's better or worse RP than the person who chooses to play a peasant and types in an accent "Eh, Alroigt mate? 'ow's it bin goin' late like? Oi jus' hammad thi' kobold!"
By the same token, I don't think *Smiles* is innately better than ": )". I usually do the former, since I like to *Smiles sweetly*, or *smiles slightly* or *smiles broadly* ETC- but that doesn't mean it's innately better or worse than : ).

Well, I've heard complaints that it breaks the mood. Also, I have no idea what msil means.

Re: Vives-101, Oct-21st Posted: 22 Oct 2003 10:46 AM |
I think that was his point (msil= typo for smile). Personally, I've never seen anyone use ":)" in place of *smiles,* and it would probably take some getting used to... I'm not really sure, to be honest, as to whether it would break the mood or not, so I'm not really going to comment :p
Also, I would prefer the Intro to Vives to be OOC... I don't think every character should have some sort of IC experience with joining some mystical wizard on a romp through the island of Vives! Plus, it's a bit easier to teach and learn about such things, such as the gadgets, in OOC. That goes double for background crafting... because how would a character ask questions about their own background IC?
Not that the IC intro to Vives was a wholly bad idea, I just think it's a bit difficult to pull off. It might be nice, however, to have 'newbie night,' where newly made characters (with their freshly made backgrounds) all happen to come to the tavern the same night, and go on some sort of low level adventure: Like protecting a caravan, or solving a local (recurring) problem. This would be a safe 'practicing ground,' and an easier way to meet new people/gain xp and a bit of gold to help flesh out your beginning supplies.
I wonder if that makes sense to anyone else?

Re: Vives-101, Oct-21st Posted: 22 Oct 2003 11:28 AM |
Actually, one character I played on high-roleplay server did actually communicate with :), :O, >:O ^_^; and the now legendary o_O
I found that it actually enhanced the character incredibly, as did the other players. (It was Sakhaji, people who have met him, who communicated like this). He was a child, and a very immature one, and there fore, the immature smilies suited him amazingly. If I had written *smiles* or *stares angrily at you* or *grins happily*, it would have made him a different character. The use of the childish smilies made him even more childish. So it worked. People would run a mile from >:O *points finger* ...
That, and I find it very difficult to put o_O into words anyway.
I haven't yet done it on Vives, mostly because this Sakhaji is a little older and actually SPEAKS But, in this case, I did find the use of smilies more appropriate, so they're not always signs of newbies :P |

| Just for the record, slink is a "she". *wink* One of what I'm beginning to think are the very few actual females playing here. *laughs* |
