The coolest thing ever
Posted: 21 Aug 2006 10:39 AM
A word that I use too often, Cool.

I got to thinking if you had to nominate just one thing/person/event as the coolest thing you'd ever had knowledge of, what would it be?

So, after much wracking of my memory, and painfully discarding many things I thought worthy of the title I would like to kick off with this one.

It comes from a documentary I saw some years ago about Jack Nicholson, who is possibly the coolest guy ever to draw breath.

He has a house he uses several times a year in europe. When he is due to visit the place he has a taxi driver meet him at the airport, the same driver every time.
The taxi takes him to his house which is perched on top of a cliff, the cliff forms a bay.
Once he has dropped Jack off at the house the taxi driver goes to the opposite side of the bay, and there he remains, with a pair of binoculars, for the entire duration of Jack's visit.
When Jack needs to go somewhere he comes to his front door, waves a handkerchief, and the taxi comes and picks him up.
How cool is that????

Huh. Never would've thought Nicholson was that type of guy.

Still, interesting nonetheless.

Yet again a perfect example in "how someones' time is more precious than someone others".

See, the problem is, I'm sure we all have a lot of cool things, but can never be sure what "The coolest thing ever" is. That, and if I were to say something were the coolest thing ever, everyone else would basically be disinterested, since we all have our own interests.

Posting for THE COOLEST THING is annoying, since like Tasra said, we can't think of the coolest thing.
So, instead, I suggest we compare our top coolest things, which will consists of the top 50, which means endless coolest things, and thus forming the coolest world.

Peace out.

Having from time to time endured rustic camping and travelling experiences, the coolest invention ever is the flush toilet, closely followed by the shower and the hot water heater.

being the cynic that I am... something would have to be REALLY cool to get on my favorites list. Because there are a lot of cool things in the world, but it only takes a few moments of thought to come up with a reason it's not really all that cool, or to think of how other people exploit, or dilute its coolness... or worse yet, how the coolness of said thing causes people to be mean/stupid/cruel/unthoughtful/etc. etc.... all around UNcool.

so, having said that... some of what I find to be my coolest things.

1. My wife still loves me, even though she has gotten to know me.

2. My God still loves me, even though he knows exactly who I am.

3. Music... even though there is plenty of just plain awful music, plenty of people who express extremely negative / hateful things through it, plenty of people exploiting it just to make money... etc. etc. etc.. when it's good, when it's real, when it is a true expression of a persons soul... it's definately one of the coolest things ever.

4. Stories. “We turn our pain into narrative so we can bear it; we turn our ecstasy into narrative so we can prolong it. We all seem to be under the sentence of Scheherazade. We tell our stories to live.” -John Shea.
People who have the gift of storytelling... that is one of the coolest things ever. (some of the people who play here have that gift, and it is a beautiful thing to see... others, like me, just try to immitate, and wish that we were even -half- as gifted at it)

5. My brain is too fried from trying to find the right words for the above things (which still don't quite express the thoughts in my head (reminds me of Soundgarden - "the words you say, never seem to live up to the ones inside your head") but that's the best I can do) to think of anything else right now... so I'll stop there.

"I'm not closed-minded, you're just WRONG." - Bucky Katt

On the music thing... the coolest thing for music for me has to be watching the drummers of the 21st GA. do a drum beat and then toss their sticks to each other and still maintain the beat. It's awesome. Makes me wish I could properly fife with 'em. (I'm just not that good yet :\ )

Still, I think one of the coolest things ever, and this may sound silly to you people, but believe me, it's something of a sore spot for me, is when people actually call back when they say they will, instead of saying that they will and then never actually following through.

Chuck Norris's picture is found near the definition of "coolest" in the dictionary.

When will they ever learn? Chuck Norris is on body-enhancing drugs.

*shivers and grins* That's cool. I totally agree. The first three are awesome too, Bkatt.

The coolest thing for me recently ((other than the rush I get when we do a great show onstage)) was the "pirate band" at the Ren Fair which hung around the bar and sang Irish-style drinkin/lovin/fightin songs. They even had the medeival drums with the little swinging ball strummers, and penny-whistles, along with the guitars and rhaspy pirate voices. Add a little mead-wine and cider-beer and a bustily-beautiful Romanian in a period dress nearby, and I was in bliss...

...

...

...in my ballcap and mickey mouse t-shirt. ((It's not my fault! They threw away my wool cloak and adventurers costume --complete with poofy sleeved shirt, high soft black leather boots, and hand-stitched worn-green cotton pants-- when I moved to Germany for 2 years!!!))

Actually it kinda creeps me out. Why doesn't he just call on a cell phone?

((probably because it's outdated, I know.))

I dont really know what to say something like this. I've been thinking what to say sience I first saw this topic. And now I've finally made my choise on the matter!

Lemmy from Motörhead's the coolest thing ever walked this earth. I heard this cool story about him just a while ago told by a friend of mine. I'm not sure weather it's actually true or not, but i wouldnt be shocked if it's the truth. You know how the Rolling Stone's guitarist Keith Richards? He has a little drug addiction and so he want to switch his blood with new fresh one, this part's at least true. Now Lemmy tried the same thing, but they couldnt eather take or give him any blood. If they'd given the blood taken from him to anyone they'd immidetly died cuz it's so "toxic". And if they'd just simply give him the fresh blood he'd died from drug addiciton complications. Now _THAT'S_ cool.

Dont get me wrong, sides from this little joke. I really do like their music and respect how opinionated their song lyrics sometimes are.

Nightmare this may be, but it's not a dream.

Just some favorite things (last one I posted was about Chuck Norris...)

1. Peter Falk's dialog in the WW II war movie "Castle Keep". He tries to desert from the army by knocking on the door of a bakery in the middle of the night in some strange French town and says/asks, "Ma'am, I'm a baker." The woman replies, "I'm a baker's wife," and lets him in. "Everybody should eat more bread!"

2. What you did not know about Hobos and 700 hobo names read aloud by the author.

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about dying."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means lying in the ground with dirt on your face and holding your breath forever."

Oh my sweet Lord... You really, really need to listen to them all. It's almost an hour long! This is officially one of my favorite things ever. Expect every one of my characters to have a name from this list from now on.

Some favorites:

Bum-Hating Virgil Hatebum
Huge-Calved Dwight
Night Blind and Color Blind, the Blind Twins
Rufus Caboose
Jane, the Boxcar Beekeeper
Aaron Threeshirts
Lowly Highly
Eustace Feetbeer
Ammonia Cocktail Jones

Someone loaned me a copy of John Hodgman's book and I couldn't get through ten names before cracking up. If you get past Ol' Barb Stab-You-Quick, you've still got Floyd Dangle and Del Folksy-Beard ahead of you. And Abelard "Sunken Treasure" Lowtrousers! I'm dying.

All 700 names can be found here. Many would make excellent gnome gnames, if you like your gnomes in crusty pants and scarves of lint.

"I'm talking about dying."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

I got such a kick out of this since the musical play I've been doing is called "The Baker's Wife" and touches EXACTLY on that issue! Check the plot out! Apparently the Brits have a very INTIMATE understanding of this issue, since they're the only ones who did the musical liberty. Oh, and to hear the effect of a French baker's wife has on "innocents", listen to this clip or this one...

I think the coolest thing ever is that you happened to post that random quote which totally relates! I have to see that Peter Falk movie now!

The coolest thing ever... hmmm

Well...

Let me think....

Probably a minor 6th. I mean, we're talking about a diminished interval in a minor context without losing the perfect fifth, or going into crazy 9th 11th and 13th jazz extensions. Besides, the musical ear is accustomed to only hearing tritones in popular music during usage of dominant 7th resolution to the Diatonic. Seriously, m7b5's only go so far out of a jazz context.

Example....

"She's not a girl who misses much...
Do do do do do-do-do, oh yeah...

*drum drum drum drum* -> *Crazy minor 6th!!* <-

She's well acquainted with the touch of the velvet hand..."
-"Happiness is a warm gun" -The Beatles

For all you musicians, You can make any minor chord into a minor 6th substitution. Basically it's a minor 7th, only lower the 7th interval down from a minor 7th to a major sixth. (IE, A C E G = Amin7. A C E F# = Amin6)
