Raised in a barn? Posted: 22 Jun 2006 12:55 AM |
I remeber there was a post sometime back about this, but I couldn't find it. So here goes:
It's just slightly irritating to go through the Port or Buckshire and find every single last door flung wide open. From a haunted house to Poor Miss Miggins pie shop that must be flooded on a daily basis from all the rain coming through her open door. I understand forgetting every once in awhile, and thats alright but if everyone just tries to shut the door behind them (Just right click to bring up the menu and then click close - I didn't know how to do this till my first day in Vives either), even if someone forgets we don't have to deal with every single unlocked home, shop, inn, or tavern in town airing out their buildings... all the time.
And not only that, you'll be helping out all my poor characters who were beat as children for not closing the door. The memories haunt them so much they have to close every open door they pass. *eyes glaze over and a ghostly voice shouts at poor poor Talion* "Did we raise you in a barn!? Then get back there and close that door!". *shudders*
Sorry to bring up old news but this has been getting really bad lately. If your willing to help thanks, if not, no hard feelings. |

I agree, I know its a petty gripe, but it makes the place look bad.
Dana and Marrya often go around ooc closing them just to give new players a good impression of the place. |

I don't see why people might get a bad impression. :x Heck, some might think of it as "Hey, doors are opened, people actually use these stores and they're not just for show". But that's just me. |

| I wonder if doors at Malls/conveneince stores/out work places and schools/ basically every door outside our homes, didn't close on their own how often we would forget to close them, I suppose thats why they all have those things to make them close... not raised in a barn, the opposite, raised in a soceity where almost everything is automatic |

I put that, because I have played some pretty awful servers in the past where builders have been too idle to put doors on buildings. We have a wonderful team here who wouldn't dream of such a thing. First impressions count. Open doors look like they have been left off, until the cursor is hovered over them. |

Funny how we think, but having worked in a store for nearly ten years prior to my current gig when we propped the door open we would get nearly double the foot traffic through the shop. The only reason we would close the door when it rained was because the moisture would damage the alarm sensor on the top of the door.
But in the interest of preserving the atmosphere I will close open doors as I encounter them too (especially since I'm sure I'm responsible for every single one) as previous to this post I had no idea how to do it. Thanks for the tip. |

Actually Kal was raised in the forest, so yeah, he always forgets to close doors... unless there's an RP reason he'd close it. (Invisible, stealthing, not wanting to leave a footprint, keep foes outside, etc...)
Paula Fuchsenbrant seems to always close doors, and Milton would likely do that too... Filraen, being a Druid Ranger, would less likely close doors... I did some acting in my youth: I tend to get into character and just forget everything else. Don't think it's some OOC ignorant thing I do (maybe sometimes)... NOW, if the admins/DMs think it will help our OL appeal, I could "break character" for the better of the community. Just let me know, and send me a PM. Heck, maybe an OCD character may be dedicated to JUST running around and closeing doors! I could see a few mages, clerics, knights or maybe Bards doing that too.
I HAVE found ONE flaw to leaving doors open: places that are only appealing for looting, if you leave the door open, less folks are likely to waste their time there. It's funny: characters who would normally flee toward the [FOIG: edited] in the [FOIG] after a reset seem to avoid it if you leave the door open... This applies to off-hours powergamers mostly... ((avoids eye contact... "er no... never done that, no..."))
;) RP should be priority right?! |

| I know I leave a lot of doors open, mostly because I'm used to them autoclosing behind me. |

Well, it's not unreasonable for some of the doors to be left open on occasion, we're not dealing with a place that has air conditioning, or fans. So unless there are some windows left open..
I can understand them being closed when it's raining, and people closing a door that they open, I'm not arguing with your point, but you would think some of these people would open their doors from time to time to let a breeze in. |
