The times are a changin Posted: 06 May 2006 04:17 PM |
How times change!
I sat back today over at my parents place, while my brother's wife slumped in her own chair two weeks away from giving birth. The baby is already 9 pounds and is expected to put on another two before she goes. My brother, normally near drunk by this time was hovering over her like a mother hen anxiously waiting on her every word and command.
My best friend also came to town. Normally when this occurs, my brother, myself, and Patrick will spend the day talking about boats, hunting, and general merriment. Today though, he brought over his two month year old twins who quickly took the place of the rum coke that was always in his hand before. The conversation never went to boats. Rather they stayed fixated on quality diapers and good cures for croup.
As the last holdout of the married and children wave that has struck my circle of friends lately. I was normally the one that watched on the sidelines, basking in my self indulgence as I had to answer to noone. Yet, oddly enough the changing times have even affected this old dour dwarf.
As of 8:30 pm last eve, I am engaged to the most beautiful and loving woman I have ever met. That in itself is a blessing that I don't feel worthy of. But on top of it I get the joy of sharing the life of her 2 1/2 year old son that has quickly become the sparkle in my eye. 364 days and counting to the wedding!
The times change, but it seems that they only get sweeter! |

very well put...I see the same thing happening with my group of friends, except more tequila and less rum and coke...
Now the real trick will be to balance the wife, the kid and Vives....not always an easy task.
Congratulations on the engagement, and enjoy it all! |

Thanks folks! Things are definitely going full throttle on this end. I had no idea that a chemical reaction occurs when you place an engagment ring on a womans finger. It seems that the time I used to spend flipping channels on the tv is very quickly being replaced by flipping through wedding magazines. Today, instead of relaxing back and watching a movie on my day off, I will be running all over town trying to find a wedding and reception site.
Oh well, she still thinks the whole NWN and dwarf thang is "kinda cute". Too bad she thinks it would be awful fun to play an elf character......*sigh*..... |

Double congratulations are due then, because if you're kicking in that kind of legwork... well that's just cool. I think its a good thing for a groom to do - you don't want to feel like a guest at your own wedding, you want to be one of the hosts! I hope everything turns out terrific.
What I found funny is the forces that will align against a groom's involvement in his own wedding. Last fall I went to a wedding show with my wife-then-fiance and there was actually a separate entrance for me around the side. Its such a strange little subculture.
Best of luck with things! |

Well, the date has been set. June 2nd of 2007. For those of you that are interested in looking for updates, here is a website we are working on. Theknot.com is a wonderful planning sight for working out some of the wedding necessities, and is nice enough to allow you a website. Photos, more wedding info, and biographies will be coming in the near future.

Note: Rather than the placemats, knicknacks, and general home crap that most people get for wedding gifts. I'd surely appreciate a new CPU and video card so I can join the NWN2 multiverse. Please feel free to send all donations to Mykal who will no doubt use his numerous college degrees to buy me the most kick arse NWN gaming machine ever made...that, or just send it to Ara so we can have a uber cool server to play on Plus, if someone could make a cleric dwarf wedding topper, I would sure appreciate it. |

You could always do what we did when we got married - we didn't have the dough for cake toppers, so we used a Playmobil bride and groom. I would recommend either Gimli from the LOTR action figure set, or if you can get your hands on one, an Elkhorn from the old AD&D action figures.

| Congratulations! May your beard never grow thin and your wife never grow bored. And tell her that dwarf females are awesome, 'cause I said so. |
