the finding of a fabled deck
Posted: 04 Jan 2006 03:12 AM
Gnimini's eyes had been wide, anticipation and worry both growing since Jubei had told him that they should speak of something important. Not the idle banter that the brothers often traded. Not the amazing stories of true deeds that Jubei usually told his big brother after they had been apart for some time. Not even the exagerated stories that Gnimini told his dwarven kin about the ladies he had met, or spells he had conjured. While these subjects were always brought up over a mug of ale between the two, even the talk of the family's past was belittled compared to what Jubei had found.

This was power far beyond either's understanding. In his youth, Gnimini had read about a deck of cards in an old book which brought much misfortune to fools of the past, desiring wealth and power at the snap of a finger...at the draw of a card. He remembered that this deck was not all bad, or no one in their right mind would think of tempting fate by drawing one. There was mention that great riches, items of great power, and ten years' experience could each be attained with one simple pull of a card. In the book, one pull was never enough. Even if the fool somehow acquired hordes of gold from the first pull, a second was always made. And there was never a happy ending.

Gnimini had taken this book, young as he was, as a moral story, intended to convey a lesson to the reader of moderation, or contentment. He never imagined that a deck of such power could actually exist. That Jubei would instantly become a character from a book of his childhood. That his little brother may become the fabled fool. But his brother was no fool. He was stubborn, yes, but had a good, kind heart. He would seek no riches from this deck, but merely to satisfy his own dwarven curiosity. To turn the next page in his own life-story. To, yet again, allow the fate which Brogodim has in store for him to be fulfilled.

The gnome thought long and hard in his room under Doc's that night. Jubei was his brother. He would support him whatever decision he makes, and be there to keep his little brother safe, if need be. The best course of action would be for him to find all the lore he could about these fabled decks. Every account tucked away in a library of knowledge, he would try to find it. Every drunken tale dismissed by sound minds could offer a possible outcome. Gnimini would do what he does best, study. Tomorrow, Ka'azim. Then Midor, the tower at Ladriel, the elven city, and even Gorilath's Keep if it could help. If Jubei decides to use these cards, he should at least know all that history can tell him of what may be coming.

---

As Gnimini drifted off to sleep, he convinced himself that Jubei is not like the fools from those stories at all. Ill must have befallen those because of the greed in their hearts, or evil plans in their heads. Even so, he prayed silently to every god he could name to keep his brother safe in the times which will follow.

a system of categorization
Posted: 04 Jan 2006 10:59 AM
There were many more examples than he had ever hoped tucked away in old tomes just in Ka’azim. He feared finding too few examples of the tragedies or triumphs resulting from Decks of Hazards, as they were referred, but instead found far more mention than he had hoped for. So many that he now faced a new problem: preparation. There were just too many different scenarios to do any type of preparing. He needed something. A way of relating similar occurrences to one another. A system for categorization. Of course. Why hadn’t he thought of it sooner. Most importantly, Good, Bad, and Somewhere Between categories. Well, it is a start…and the list can be narrowed down from there. Chance of occurrence…of course. That is very valuable information, too.

The passionate Gnome, intent on his task, worked on with his categorizations.

taming the deck
Posted: 05 Jan 2006 12:21 AM
Gnimini worked late into the night on his system of categorization and fell asleep, quill in hand, head resting on the final product:

=====

Taming the Deck of Hazards: A Compilation of Historical Results
by Gnimini

-----

Good results:
1- card grants a random arcane item
*there are far too many items described for each to be a card, so I assume random.
2- card grants an effect similar to the ‘true-seeing’ spell, permanently
3- card summons a small wyrm as a faithful and loyal servant
*wyrm seems to magically lives as long as the owner
4- card grants a wealth of gold to the owner
5- card** grants owner years of wisdom and experience in a moment
6- card** seems to affect items being carried by the owner at the time by vastly increasing the numbers of certain items. this card isn’t fully understood.

Bad results:
1- card removes all items carried by the owner except those worn
2- card** magically removes all the knowledge gained by a person in the past [undetermined time period]
3- card inflicts owner with some unidentifiable, chronic illness which is not contagious and persists throughout the owner’s lifetime.
4- card summons a great wyrm to eat the owner and any observers
5- card magically alters the owner’s mind to an amazing extent.
*kind hearts are turned to stone, anarchists to law-enforcers, strange indeed

Other results:
1- card turns owner into a creature for [undetermined time period]. while the transformation seems to be temporary, and non-fatal, often the common reaction of others when seeing this ‘creature’ is to try to kill it. it is not evident whether the owner is ‘in control’ during the initial transformation. those few surviving the first and other card effects, however, are granted the ability to transform into this creature at will and remain conscious and in control. sleep and death seem to be the only things which revert the creature into the physical form of the owner.

**pulling this card seems to somehow obligate the owner to draw two more cards in addition to however many are to be pulled otherwise

-----

Note from the Author:

All multiple accounts found in recorded history fit roughly into the above categories. There were also many unique results which fit into no category, though some were even less believable than what I have written. My guess would be that while there are more frequent results from these decks, the magic contained within is potentially as random as the most active imagination.

Individual accounts taken from the libraries at Ka’azim and Midor.

*Shamn the Elder examines the work of the gnome*

"Yes, yes, very interesting, interesting indeed, but I think you have overlooked something. Come over hear, take a look at this picture. It was made by a mage who lived during the time of Lynaeum who says he made an exact illustration of the deck you refer to"

"Now look at this illustration done about two thousand years later during the time of the Aristi"

"And see this one? It was nade by an elven researcher at a later date. Now, can you see what I am referring to?"

"Yes, that's right. They are all different, not only are they all different in appearance, but the reported properties of such decks are also mostly different"

"Now, look at this, look very carefully at the bottom right. Yes, those scratches there in the circular spiral pattern. Most curious, are they not because they are the same in all the illustrations. Now, if you take those scratchings, and straighten them out it begins to make more sense. Ah, you don't recognize them? They are Abyssal, my boy, and it says 'The only constant is change'."

an invitation to a spectacle
Posted: 06 Jan 2006 10:54 PM
After meeting up with Jubei at the Buckshire Trading Post, having been delayed himself watching some very pretty ladies he passed, the wily-haired dwarven gnome, the dwarf, and the man had decided to meet at the meeting spot in the Great Plains, north of Midor, in two days time just after mid-day. With some hesitation, Gnimini posted a parchment containing the following at the Trading Post, at Doc’s Watering Hole, and at the Market in Port Royale.

----------

Let it be known to those who are curious or interested, and open of mind that in two days time, just after mid-day at the plains north of Midor, observers are invited to watch a spectacle. An item of powerful magic is to be utilized. While many precautions are being taken, know that danger will be present and great consideration should be taken by all who consider joining us. Each present may be asked to watch from a distance and not interfere.

"A curious message, 'the only constant is change'. What do you think that means, young Scholar?"

"Exactly, based on the evidence we have discussed we can safely conclude that the magic of the cards changes over time. Any thing you may learn of such magic this time, might not be the same of the next"

"Incredible, isn't it?"

"What? Would I ever like to investigate such magics? Oh, no. Not me. Too dangerous. Why, the cards could open up a portal and send me into the deepest reaches of hell while showering me with wealth unimaginable. Oh no, let it not be said that I, Shamn the elder, have not gained wisdom in my dotage."

a recount of events
Posted: 10 Jan 2006 12:19 AM
((OOC note: most of what follows should be known by those in attendance during the drawing of the cards))

There were more in attendance at the plains north of Midor than Gnimini had expected for the drawing. The three women who spoke in the elven tongue, a halfling named Claudia, the human smith, Connavar, and at least one other. Gnimini had lost track counting when he went to sit alone and prepare his spells. After Jubei had gone ahead, to the Midor Mountains, the rest of the group followed slowly, talking amongst themselves along the way. The dwarf eluded the group for a short time once they arrived, while he was praying to Bregodim for safety.

Once all were prepared--protective spells cast, prayers offered, watching from a safe distance--Jubei drew three cards as he had planned. One of the cards magically drew out two additional cards from the top of the deck. Which cards had been drawn, though, was not at all evident. Gnimini and Connavar immediately ran down to Jubei, who looked very confused and kept asking what he was doing in the Midor Mountains, which he recognized. From his categorizing, Gnimini hypothesized that Jubei must have drawn the 'prince of lies' card, which takes away the drawer's recent memory. After a somewhat successful attempt to explain the situation to his annoyed brother, Gnimini listened, trying to find out what other cards had been drawn. Amid his ranting, Jubei stated that his pack seemed incredibly light, but that his gold pouch was practically overflowing. These two occurrences made Gnimini think that the dwarf had likely drawn the 'hoard' and 'knave' cards; which respectively give the drawer much gold and magically remove many possessions from their pack. Three of the Five cards drawn had been identified, but the two others showed no obvious signs.

Due to the lack of excitement, it seemed, some of the observers were starting to dissipate and leave the area. Gnimini ran up and thanked them for coming and told them of his speculations about which cards Jubei had drawn. Just after he arrived back to where Jubei and Connavar stood, his brother vanished before his eyes. The man and the gnome immediately ran around looking for the dwarf, unsuccessfully. Gnimini's mind raced through the other categories of results, though none of them predicted anything like this. It seemed that Jubei had simply vanished...but he had to have gone somewhere. Somewhere. That was it, he had to find out where. After thoroughly scouring the Mountains, Connavar brought up the idea to go ask the mistress at the tower of Ladriel or Shamn, Elder of the Ka'azim faction of wizards for help. The two then asked the remaining observers, who had stuck around after realizing that Jubei had dissappeared, to keep their eyes peeled and ears open to any report of the location of the dwarf. They then ran as fast as they could to Ka'azim, to seek the council of Shamn.

Connavar came upon Salt Sower as he was fanning an assortment of narrow glass vials tinted green with verdigris, having become impatient to pack them up and move on down the road. Another mage named Azraël joined to watch and talk. Salt had not seen Azraël for many months, and barely recognized the man.

Azraël brought the conversation around to the subject of Jubei and the disaster that seemed to have befallen him. “Hey stranger,” he said to Conn, “Any luck finding your dwarven friend?”

“Salt!” Connavar exclaimed, “I can’t believe I didn’t think of you.”

“Wh-what?” Salt asked.

“Jubei he… well he drew from the deck of Hazards!”

“I had seen the announcements,” Salt replied, “but I wasn’t going to be caught anywhere near that thing!”

Azraël shrugged slightly. "I guess I'm just curious."

Connavar continued to exclaim. “Well he disappeared! Right before my eyes…. Poof! Gone. We searched frantically, with not a trace of him.”

“What of Gnimini?” Salt asked. “Oh mischief, mischief!”

“He is in a shambles. I left him at Ka’azim, he was begging Shamn to help him find him.”

Salt nodded. “Do you have anything personal of his? Something he made, perhaps? Some metal he’d mined, or a gem he’s polished?”

“He gave me some bags to hold, yes.” No doubt Jubei had handed over his most valuable treasures before drawing from the deck, not wishing to risk the rarest of his possessions.

While Conn looked throuhg his things Salt said, “I could try to locate him… it could be that a connection could be made, given the proper preparation… I could try… try, mind you.”

Connavar did indeed have a number of objects that had been in Jubei’s possession. They took them inside, to Elbert’s habitation. Salt spread the things out on the tabletop. They included a number of arrow shafts without heads or fletching, which the dwarf had crafted, a battle-axe of considerable enchantments that Conn said Jubei had used once or twice, several Malar hides that Salt hesitated to touch, and an assortment of gems and minerals in a satchel of cougar-skin, including a large number of perfectly-formed ingots of mithril. These Salt suspected had the most of Jubei invested in them, might locate him on their own in fact, but then every bit helped.

When these materials were laid out on the table Salt used a very basic method of divination. He took up the arrow shafts first. With one held in each hand, he rubbed them with his thumbs until the friction warmed them. He squeezed them and pressed them, but nothing much came to him.

Next he tried the axe. Forged in stone, the weapon was potent, but Conn said Jubei only used it a time or two. The seer turned it over in his hands. He ran a palm over the blade and felt the handle. The enchantments upon the weapon totally overwhelmed any trace that Jubei might have left on the thing.

Putting down the axe, Salt took up a heavy ingot of mithril in each hand. The things were rectangular, perhaps an inch thick, with a stamp on one surface that defied the seer’s understanding. He held his arms out, ingots weighing heavily in his palms, rubbing their surfaces with his thumbs like they were worry-stones. With very little prompting the vibrations coursed up his arms and he closed himself off in surprise.

He nodded to Conn. “Would you leave me with these things?”

Conn acquiesced and he and Azraël left Elbert’s home, closing the door behind them. Smirking, Salt threw the bolt on the door, taking pleasure in the usurpation of what was now the Mayor’s residence. He took the mattress off Elbert’s diminutive bed and laid it on the floor where he could stretch out. He took his blankets too, and his pillow, and after taking an ingot of mithril in each hand he lay down and covered himself warmly. He breathed slowly and evenly and began to rub the two ingots very softly with his thumbs.

It took him three hours to sift through the vibrations resulting from the ingots’ manufacture, to discover that the objects gave him no hint about Jubei’s whereabouts.

Lying under the blankets, breathing very steadily, he opened his eyes. “Sorry Conn. I get nothing.”

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about dying."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means lying in the ground with dirt on your face and holding your breath forever."

Lamentations of one's soul
Posted: 13 Jan 2006 06:38 AM
((OOC Disclaimer: IF you aren't Jubei, one of the demons, or the Devil himselfSmileythen Rp this accordingly, Thanks))

The Air was stale with a certain warmth to it, and through the flickering torch light mold could be seen growing on the ancient stone work of the prison camp. This growth was of course spurred on by the regular splattering of blood and other viscous fluids, as the keepers of this prison took great pleasure in administering the inmates daily doses of "attention". Cries for mercy and the screams of agonising pain were a constant here, though by now Jubei had gotten quiet used to it. The apparition of this son of bregodim sat eerily next to his corpse. His Sad gray eyes would occationally glance down at his eviscerated form, only to let out a long sigh.

"Arrr... what the ell have I gone and gotten meself in ta now? Curse me bloody curiousity. I be a fool fer messin with those cards. me per body... already startin ta fester, and here i be outside of tha elder dwarves' influnce, with nothin but tha demons and their captives ta keep me company.Arrr... and me per Bro Gnimini... I'm sure he be fer worryin, and tis not his fault, but ell he doesn't know that. Tha per lad has already lost ta only mum and pops he ever be fer knowin... and now ta lose tha only family he be fer havin left. And conn... all tha folks that relied on me fer one thing er another... now they gotta suffer too, just cuz i don't have tha sense not ta be playin with fire."

There were many who had become accustom to the dwarf's presence, his smithing, his constant willingness to help when the cause seemed right in his heart of hearts, and even a few who just enjoyed his company. Jubei knew this, he knew that for some of them he had become a cog in their plans and that without him would not work. This weighed heavily on his soul, though there was little he could do now. No all Jubei could do now was wait. Wait and hope that somehow the powers that are above his understanding would see fit to give this wayward son of Bregodim another chance.

And what of this Prison's master? Certainly by now he was well aware of the dwarf who ,almost out of thin air, appeared and killed three of his better servants before succumbing to their brethen. Jubei pondered this often and After much consideration, came to the conclusion that perhaps by having him held captive here, where he could never become a threat, It served his evil intent all the better. With this Jubei's soul sat upon his own chest and hoped... For hope is all he has left.

A Glimmer of Hope: Naillamne
Posted: 24 Jan 2006 01:11 AM
It had been weeks now since Jubei’s disappearance. Shamn had shown little concern for the whole situation and, despite the gnome’s persistence, had either been unwilling or unable to locate the son of Bregodim. Gnimini had finally given up on waiting for Shamn, and was wandering around just north of his old stomping grounds where the citizens gave him polite nods and understanding smiles, though may of them didn’t even know about the tragedy which had befallen his brother half way across Vives.

Walking past the Four Winds Inn, He had encountered a female Gnome, a Halfling, and a Dwarf who he overheard mentioning the name of his brother. He hadn’t believed his ears at first, and approached the three rather hesitantly. The Three…they sure were an interesting group. Gnimini had almost immediately assumed that the two non dwarves lacked sanity, but had amended his first conclusion and decided that they just lacked much good sense. They each seemed to contribute to the whole of the group, though, which he imagined would be quite a formidable force working together to a definite end. And, they were looking to find Jubei.

After hours of conversation about what often seemed like nonsense and frequently shot off on strange tangents, the Gnome Miramil had advised Gnimini to contact the Naillamne Mages and ask for help, though she herself hadn’t faced a hearty welcome the last times she’d visited. Since Gnimini had never visited the mages and the road was said to be treacherous, he decided to deliver it himself. He would ask Connavar to take him there, who would certainly know the way.

Gnimini had rushed back to his room at Doc’s and carefully prepared the letter:

-----

Knowledgeable Mages of Naillamne,

I, Gnimini, Student of the Arcane, write you in desperate times. I know little of your organization aside what I have read and the effectiveness of your robes, but write with hopes that you would hear my story and offer your aid, if it is within your means. I will start with a brief account.

My brother Jubei, the dwarven smith, chanced upon a deck of hazards. He decided, after I had researched the written lore about the cards from volumes in Ka’azim and Midor, that he would prepare and dance with the deck. He set to draw three cards, but took five in total. He suffered memory loss and two other consequences of the deck were identified. Before the other two were known, Jubei disappeared, presumably due to the cards power.

Having had some contact with the wizards at Ka’azim, I thought to seek their help first, but the elder there had noticed my research initially and given me somewhat of a warning against using the cards, which I relayed to my brother to no avail.

I recently ran into a Gnome by the name of Miramil who was in search of my brother, as well. After discussing the situation extensively and laying out possible options, your help was at the top of the list as the most promising option. She stated that she wasn’t sure if her name would help my brother’s cause, but it is how I came about being here, seeking your help.

I will wait here for a few days, in hopes of response or attaining an audience. Otherwise, I can be reached in the Port of Royal or the town of Buckshire. I humbly await your help. Of course, I will be forever indebted in the event that you help me find my brother.

Desperately in need of help,
*signed*
Gnimini

-----

Weeks. The thought kept trying to creep into his mind. Gnimini did not dare to entertain THAT thought. His brother could not be.

"i will find my brother. no matter what."

Gnimini spoke aloud after he re-read his letter late in the night. With a strange look in his eyes and an unusual tone, he continued.

"he will not end up like mum."

the early bird catches the bad news
Posted: 27 Jan 2006 10:59 PM
Gnimini awoke to the sound of footsteps just outside his door. He usually sleeps soundly at Doc's, feeling nice and secure. He quickly sat up, startled, and began mumbling the incantations of the first offensive spell that came to his mind, one which conjures up lightning which can be controlled, when he noticed the light coming from under his door. It was morning. The Gnome stopped the incantation and waved his hands to dispurse the blue glow which had started forming on them.

There was one solid *knock* at his door before a strong, but unfamiliar, voice said plainly:

"A Message for one 'Gnimini' from one 'Connavar'"

A folded and wax-sealed parchment was slid under the door and as quickly as they came, the footsteps grew more distant before the sound of the door leading upstairs faintly closed. Gnimini knew immediately that this message must concern Jubei. It would either contain information about him having been found, or an apology from Connavar for finding out nothing so far.

Gnimini slowly got out of bed and walked towards his door. Even with his height, it only took a few steps and he was upon it. He bent and picked up the parchment and walked back over to his bed before gently setting it down there. He then muttered some arcane words and glanced up which caused a warm light to illuminate the room. He sat with the message in his lap for a monent, the pale wax seal more of a courtesy than an officiating symbol. He tugged lightly until the seal tore from the bottom part of the parchment, which left soem residue on the wax. He opened the letter and read it over quickly for the important information.

"...he is dead."

Gnimini read aloud and diverted his eyes from the letter. After taking a deep breath, eyes glazed over, he re-read the letter carefully and noted the important facts.

-Cora the Hin gave the information willingly and offered to aid in the recovery fo the body
-Jubei lays in a Nethar'u slave camp
-Connavar is weary of the information, but will aid in any way

The Gnome carefully folded the letter and placed it in his pack and immediately rose and prepared his pack and gear for a journey. He then left his room in search of a man with whom he must speak.

The missing dwarf, Jubei Murasame, has been found. Any with extensive skill in weaponry, spellcasting, healing, scouting, or other areas useful in a dangerous situation, are welcome and asked for your aid in finding him and bringing him back safely.

This will be a very DANGEROUS journey.
