Ryvark the Northman

Ryvark was born in the Great Northern Wastes, a far away land of ice and snow. The Great Northern Wastes kills those not wise enough to understand that the land is like a beast itself. To survive it you must understand it and respect it.
"It is here under Wolf's watchful eye that many of you will perish at the savageness of our lands, learn from your elders they can teach you the lessons that can save you from the dangers of the lands we call home. Someday in the near future a great event shall test those that survive these times, but should you fall under the jaws of this unforgiving land you shall never reach that day..."

Elder huntsman of the Wolf clan
Years passed and Ryvark had almost reached adulthood by the laws of the wolf clan. He had become a proficient warrior by this time, but only an average hunter at best.
Ryvark was away with a hunting party for several days when fate intervened.
Returning to the clans encampment the hunting party found nothing but ashes and the dead, the clan had been attacked. The remains of a great battle were all that remained of the mighty people. Evidence of men on horseback, wearing steel of the Outlanders...and sorcery, were found. Through the use of magic this army had simply appeared and had struck ruthlessly killing all who lived. And aided by magic simply vanished after their prize was claimed.
It had been obvious that these Outlanders had come to take an ancient item that the elders of the clan had guarded for generations, what that item might be Ryvark couldn't say, only the elders knew the exact nature of the item that had rested among the wolf clan for so long.
Only the twelve men who had been away hunting had been spared the fate of their people...they knew their ancestors watched and weighed.
The survivors gathered what supplies could be found, and with an oath to the Wolf and their ancestors vowed to find what was stolen and to avenge their people. They scattered to the four winds with vengence in their heart, knowing that the great Wolf clan would be no more.
Ryvark left the Northern Wastes with only his half brother, a half-orc oddly enough. Together they braved the wilds of the world travelling by foot or ship to find those responsible for the death of their people.
A few years had passed as the brothers travelled, their search had thus far been in vain. Ryvark's half-orc brother was a simple creature, food, ale and something to fight and all was right with the world.
The deaths of the ten other surviving clansmen, began to slip into Ryvark's dreams. He knew one day without doubt that he and his brother were the last of the Wolf clan, and that something had been hunting the survivors.
Their travels led them to a small kingdom with urgent matters of it's own, and by chance Ryvark's half-orc brother became a hero in this kingdom. Ryvark stayed by his brothers side for many months, but he knew his brother no longer needed him to keep the half-orc from trouble.
The little kingdom needed his brothers strength, and here the half-orc found acceptance. Ryvark feeling the stares of his ancestors left a note to his brother (hoping someone would read it to him) and bought passage on a ship bound for other lands.
A year or so has passed since he left his brother and the ship that he has purchased passage on puts into a place called Port Royale.
Ryvark's manner is mild in comparison to many of his clan, the years of wandering and futile searching is slowly beginning to erode his resolve.
The loneliness of the years of wandering and searching have made an impact in his soul. He values friendships that he makes dearly, willing to sacrifice body and mind to preserve it.
He has adapted well enough in the "Outlander" ways, but Magic is still something of a mystery to him, while no longer does he frantically avoid the users of this arcane power, or try to kill them on sight for that matter. It still leaves him anxious watching the more visual effects of an arcane spell.

| Not such a mystery. Port Royale is depicted as a "wide open" town. Anything and anyone might show up on the docks there. :) |

Anything with port in the name does- because then people can arrive from other lands without having to really know the campaign setting first :P
Or that's my best guess, anyway. |
