Anti-Flame Posted: 30 Nov 2005 05:01 PM |
I've had some very positive experiences with GMs recently, in both good and bad circumstances, over the past couple of days, and given that this forum is often filled with negative posts -- since it's, of course, a "flames" post...duh! -- I thought I might add something a little more positive.
First, I've had some great quests with GMs recently and want to thank them for that...even though I died (and to be fair, resurrected as well), it was a great time...everyone who was on it has agreed...
Second, this morning I was with another player in the attic of the Slaughtered Dragon in Midorn when I was penalized for apparently stealing items from chests. How the noble and good Cedrych von Maistlin could ever be accused of such a villanous crime is inconceivable! ;)
Suffice to say, the chests were already empty and I hadn't taken anything, but I do realize that a paladin probably shouldn't have been looking into them (although to be fair, this was more of a reflex action on the part of Cedrych's weak RL human player because I noticed new scripting in the area and wanted to see if anythign else was different). I also admitted to some minor meta-gaming as although we were already on our way to the Dragon for purely RP purposes, I had mentioned to the player through a TELL about the attic there....
The GM in question had a good conversation and I accepted the punishment we agreed upon, and I thought it was a very professional wayh to handle things on his part. I was probably a little keyed up at the beginning since I hadn't taken anything, but he was very good and civil about the whole thing
So, the point of my post is (yes, Imperious, get on with it):
Just a reminder that we're all guests here on the Vives world. Other than thinking about my character background and occasionally posting on the website, I have put very little effort into this world while greatly enjoying it. In contrast, the GMs and development team have put and continue to put great amounts of time and creativity into it, and we're only here because of their effort. There's really not that many rules here, but it can be easy to relax out of your IC character and do things that you shouldn't necessarily do (guilty as charged!).
So, let's please keep respecting the world, the people who make it, and the very minor requirments they put on us. I must say, if anything, my experience has only made me appreciate Vives that much more...

And, as he said, he didn't actually steal anything.
Looking through someone's posessions may be regarded as somewhat unpaladinlike, but it isn't stealing.

However, had he done so, to steal from the temple, I am certain his punishment would have been much much worse.

I still think, though, a pretty fair case can be made for a paladin looking through boxes and chests, so long as he or she doesn't take anything, or for example, picks locks, breaks down doors and chests, etc.
For example, take the abandoned house in Port Royale. One has to do a pretty thorough bit of investigation there, including perhaps going through an item or two, or never figure out what's going on. Now admittedly, it's an -abandoned- house, yes, but it did belong to someone or something in the past. If Cedrych is on a quest or investigating some evil disturbance, it seems to me that it might be necessary and even demanded that he perhaps search a long-dead body or some other activity that might normally be verbotten. It's all context.
So, with that in mind, back to the attic. From this point of view, he's been asked to go upstairs to clear out bats. Fairly straight-forward, but it's also quite possible that something else is going on? Is it just bats? Are they a harbinger of something else? Have the bats (or something else) made a nest in an old crate or barrel or whatever.
Of course this doens't give a paladin (or anyone else for that matter) carte blanche to go uninvited into someone's house and look around. But I think the fact that he was asked by the owner to go upstairs, look arouind and try to solve the problem gives him a little (very little) latitude here.
I'm still fine with what happened...just a thought.... |

This is a sticky issue. There's stuff lying around everywhere and there seems to be no consequence from taking it. I was interested to hear about this exchange, and Mikaylin's (jive as it was to lose the limbs). Its one thing to borrow salt from a ~sack~ of salt to cure some hides (I think?) but I wonder about the treasure that respawns all over Vives in perfectly safe, unlocked, unguarded places. "Thanks for nursing me back to health, Midor free clinic! Now I'll just help myself to whatever is in this desk..."
My sorcerer Sooner is lawful, and I thought I would try and play him as someone who never steals anything from anywhere, which forced me to look at the difference between legitimate "loot" and these other opportunities to take property away from inns, homes, merchants, sewer workers, guard houses, etc. I never thought about this with any other character I started in Vives--in fact I assumed that the stuff was there to help low-level characters get a basic kit together. Maybe its really there so that rogues can feel like rogues and lift it? Right now I think folks are used to crawling over these places like locusts, nabbing what's available. Yeah, Sooner gave in and took the stuff a time or two when he needed some money. Guess he's not so lawful after all...
Respect the world takes on new meaning. Thanks for posting it, Imperious! |
