Screwed Up Saving Throws!! >:( Posted: 05 May 2005 12:46 PM |
Alright, this has happened more than once, but a particular event just made me post something about it.
I have a base fort saving throw of 10...all my pluses of what Im wearing give me a total of 15. I waltz into a dungeon and come across a greater-medusa. Now, I know(from experience) that there stone gaze is a fort saving throw...so I take the chance an fight her anyway. I become gazed the first try...oh well..I was stupid...I deserved it..right? So, as Im getting killed I decide to check the turn logs and see what the DC save was...IT WAS A 13!!! I rolled a 1 (which happens alot for saves >:( ) and got a 16...What the hell!?
This may be considered flamming, but this has happened more than once, where a critical save is made, but discarded and ya get screwed anyway. I suggest this gets looked into, because...well...thats just not right. |

Hi Ichbin,
I am afraid that this is a D&D rule not a Vives or NWN rule. Rolling a 1 is always an automatic failure and rolling a 20 is always an automatic sucess.
This means that you have to be extra careful to weigh up the odds when fighting creatures like the greater medusa and (for example) creatures that have death magic and when you cannot protect against it.
Tough way for you to find this out though .

Indeed, it's a D&D rule ... and you are not the only one that has this "tough luck"...
My character got killed because she rolled a 1... on a Will save throw... she is a cleric, so imagine the frustration!
But I have something to say about this. *Notice* I am not speaking against the Dm or creatures at -all- I know the engine of NWN is the one responsible and not you, it's just a fact or my bad luck ;)
But strangely, when people makes saving throw or roll dices out for touching or anything, it's always hard for the players to meet the requirement, but creatures always seem to do it easily. My bad luck or NWN is evil? (*silently vote for NWN*) ;P

Well, Belle.. to answer your question, you really only have to go as far as reading the signatures of some of the DMs/Builders... I think the Official Unofficial motto here is "constantly seeking new ways to kill characters" or some such.

I beg to differ. I've fought plenty of creatures and monsters that have had "Bad Luck" when rolling a save for one of my spells. Of course over the time I've developed an instinctive fear of water elementals... so I suppose it balances out. *grimaces at the thought of water elementals, then his expression twists into a broad grin at the thought of dragons falling to Finger of Death* |

Well, that would have to be changed in an .ini file of the person who runs the server, not something that you could change and have it affect playing on Vives. |

Yes, there is an option to disallow 1 = automatic failure.
Heck, I would even love to turn it on, considering the number of times my character has died because of a stupid "1", but, we won't.
High/higher level characters have almost nothing to fear. They would have nothing to fear if they always made their saving throws.
No matter the level of your character, you should be hesitant, at least a little, when fighting because you never know how it is going to turn out - especially if a "1" could change things drastically.

I know that Paul know that I didn't mean this but to make it clear:
I was just saying this for FYI only, not for something that Vives might add. When a level 1 holds a knife to your neck there is always a chance that the knife will cut. |

| Unless you have slashing resistance higher than that level 1 can ever do damage... then you don't have to worry about it ever cutting no matter what the dice. *grins* |

Just as a point, and this is kind of a semi question,
but natural 20's do not equal automatic successes? Is that right. |
Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

A natural 20 does equal automatic success A natural 20 (for those who don't know) is where you roll a 20 and add your plusses on top.
So you would succeed with a natural 20 even if you wouldn't succeed with the total of the dice roll plus your ability score.
If that make sense .

| Is this only for saving throws, because I have tried Picking Locks etc and it doesnt give an auto success then. |

Hehe... yeah, somthing tells me that if it WERE for picking locks, the take 20 rule would never have come into existance

| On locks/traps what they do is give you an auto-20 if you're just standing around and not under attack. They assume if you don't get the 20 on the first shot, you'd just try and try again. We take the 1 and 20 rules a little further in PnP, with a 20 always being a critical hit regardless of THAC0 and a 1 always being a critical miss (We even have a fumble chart for it! What a great idea for Vives! >:D) |

The NWN system is standard 3e rules.
a natural 20 is a hit, even if you normally could not hit the creature. A second natural 20 would result in a critical, even if you were unable to hit the creature normally.
That's a 1 in 400 chance of happening. What this means in practice, is that it happens quite frequently with the nwn random number generator. |
