Beastie Knowledge Posted: 27 Mar 2005 07:04 PM |
Was just thinking about this, and I was wondering... Would it be at all possible to make it so that OOC knowledge about things aren't displayed? Instead of something like "Muzzlewhump has AC Increased, Dex Increased, Immune to Fire, Resistant to Cold, and an alergy to Chocolate", maybe just leave the difficulty (Moderate, Challenging, etc.) and a description of it that may imply some of the things you may really need to know to kill the denzien like "Boppidiboop: Very Difficult Boppidiboop is a very buff Bopp and inhabits the area vigorously. With a lush pelt, it's hind paw is valued in perfumes. Rumor has it that the Boppidiboop stays away from all flames."
Any thoughts or comments on this are quite welcome. |

| It may be hard-coded to be like that. Were it possible though I would say have it based off of an Intelligence or Lore check to see what the character might know about the creature. That would be neat. *nods* |

| I think you can add some sort of hidden tag at the end of your description that will display the text in black, so it is really hard to read. But I don't know how to do that. |

I just don´t look at it usually. If you don´t know a monster and want to RP it, either ask someone IC, read about it in a bestiarum etc., or just find out yourself. So, I don´t think it´s necessary to change it, it´s more fun to RP it and then you can still look at the description and use it when you run across a certain beast again. Well, and if you want to look up its difficulty only you can still base it on your character´s wisdom if he rates a monster dangerous or effortless. |

Update:
In order to make your text black at the end type "<c111>"
It is not a perfect solution and people with brightness on montors up high can still read it, however it is a lot easier to just not try and read it. |

One more thing:
Make sure the DMs give the go-ahead to use this first, and probably keep all other colors out of your name and other description. |

I must admit I think that IC knowledge of monsters can really add a good dimension to combat. One thing I like to create in my PnP games in Knowledge (Monsters) with individual characters being able to learn about weaknesses and strengths.
This kinda means that combat is more than just stats and numbers. Dont know quite how this fits in with this topic but it would be nice if perhaps the display was absent and the monsters in Vives were unique and had different ways of defeating them. Characters would then need to find this info out for themselves. |
Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

If something other than the default strengths/weaknesses/immunities/decreased immunities were to be put on NPCs, one idea would be that the PCs would gain knowledge AFTER fighting said creatures for a set amount of time.
That is probably not only difficult and very time-consuming, but probably even impossible. Though, I must say, after several hundred hours' worth of mod building and scripting on my own, I wouldn't be surprised if the builders of Vives would be able to figure such things out. |
