What have your characters taught you? Posted: 17 Oct 2004 01:50 PM |
One of my favourite things is learning. I love discovering new things about myself and others, and the world around me. I usually think of bringing my knowlege into a role playing game, and using it, or not, to give my character depth and interest. However, I have had those moments of serendipity when my characters have actually taught me something. Of course I shouldn't be too surprised I suppose because any time you interact meaningfully with other people you should expect to learn and to grow, but it is always a pleasant surprise when it happens in something as "silly" as a game.
So I'm curious, what have your characters taught you, if anything?
I'll get the ball rolling. Some of you may or may not know, and I don't like giving IC things away OOC, but I suppose it is pretty obvious to those who have met him in game. I play the deaf dwarf Jholl Thunderdrum. What I learned from him wasn't entirely new, but it reinforced some things I had already dimly understood, in a clear and immediate way.
What I learned from that loud obnoxious dwarf was that being hearing impaired is a very lonely experience. You often don't understand what is going on around you, and you are often misunderstood. People tend to mistake deafness for stupidity, or a mental problem, and people often don't want to be around you because they don't understand why you act the way you do, and you make them uncomfortable.
Now I realize that Jholl Thunderdrum has other issues beyond simply being hearing impaired :), but playing him has, hopefully, taught me to be a little more compassionate with people I meet that suffer with similar challenges. |

Kitty is, as you will know if you have spoke to her, very simple. Simple-minded I mean. If she has taught me anything it would be, how innocent the world looks when you arn't that clever. The more intelligent you are, the more you look in to things, the more you get angry, the more the world doesn't seem as nice as it looks. This is mainly a comparison thing, not that I am saying that I am super brainy or anything. It's just when I play her I love the way she looks at things, not seeing much evil in anything; well apart from the centaur children that shot her in the bum. Played loads of characters, mostly evil, but my favorite to play has been Kitty, actually makes me laugh in RL when I play her, and after a 'oh so boring' day at work making lenses, there is nothing better than to come home and go simple-minded for a few hours and have a laugh...
Errmm, this is not an insult to simple-minded people by the way, if anything I envy the way some of them see the world......... |

Fri'el taught me that arrogance, pride, self obsession, and desire to be fawned upon get you very bad places very fast.

*darkly* Eliana's taught me to never assume I have any control over my characters whatsoever.
Seriously though, adapting the viewpoint of someone completely different from yourself is an enlightening experience - at least for me. Eliana is very different from me in her outlook and many of her opinions, so I have had to dig deeply to figure out why she thinks and does certain things. I think it's giving me a slightly better understanding of people in general, because I'm forced to see the reasons behind Eliana's actions and viewpoints IG... and the habit carries over into RL. I'm thinking a little more about possible motivations for people's actions, and don't make so many assumptions... Eli makes enough of those for both of us. :P |

:) I think my characters have taught me more than I dare to admit. As each character develops their own personality, the fragment of me that they are based on seems to strengthen. Shaz'jen has taught me a lot about being a smart-arse, for example And how to put on one facade to protect another Sakhaji has shown me a lot about just seizing the moment and getting on with it. I could go on :D |

Daimon taught me how to smith steel.. and apply annealed coats of alloys to strengthen a natural carbon ferrous blend of composite metals of soft and hard qualities. I do all the plumbing in my house now. |

My band mates will tell you that I am a lot like Johe, I'd like to think I'm a bit smarter and less naive than he is, but wether that is true or not, it's strange how playing Johe has strengthened my resolve to continue the path that we started as a band over a year ago, we quit our careers to be part time workers and full time musicians, things have been up and down, and admittedly right now they are down as far as finding gigs, and stuff, but I can honestly say that I have never been more happy than I am chasing the dream. As Johe would say "you can always guyver gold, but smiling while yer lookin' for it is the fun part." |
