Starter questions...and thx. Posted: 01 Feb 2004 08:01 AM |
Hi folks,
K, a few questions first from a a pair of newbies. First how do you 'tell' someone who is not in your party (I know you can d.click the portrait if in party)? And how do you message or 'tell' a dm if needed? Apologies to the person who 'telled' me this morning but had no clue how to reply. Am sure its explained somewhere, but easier to ask here. I believe its 'meant' to be achieved thru the player info stone, but cant see any option to activate tells in the menu.
Also, last night (Saturday GMT) we spent over an hour trying to do a simple bit of shopping cos of server crashes and othersuch problems, like one of our characters dying cos of bad lag shifting her directly onto a trap she was carefully walking round. And I thought I hated shopping IRL! :0) First time to be fair that have had any such problems, but just wondering if its a common problem when there are 20+ players playing? We also had a very fun DM bit of intervention into a starter quest we were doing that was spoiled a bit by one of our computers hanging when trying to walk thru a door, and then after rebooting and rejoining the game Jane couldnt see my character or hear anything I said. Course the fact our carefully worked out plan fell to pieces, leaving me on my own facing two DM run NPC's and trying to stall for time while Jane frantically rebooted, had a definite amusement factor all its own. Anyway, none of this a big deal, more than anything wanted to explain why things went a bit pear shaped last night for us.
That said all the above was the only probs of any significance Ive found in first 15+ hrs of play. So now onto the happier bit...thx a lot to all the people who've welcomed us IG. Huge thx for some really fun bits of Dm'ing that have literally had me jumping out of my seat a couple of times. Its amazing to never know when an NPC is going to turn round and say 'what the hell are you doing in my house'!? :0)
And big thx to whoever the player of Soapie Nimblefingers is for showing us round, stopping us dying TOO often, and some fun RP! :0) And indeed thx to every player we've met, w/out exception seems this world has good rp'ers, great scenery and a huge amount of effort must have gone in to creating it. So thx to all, and look forward to meeting more and more folks once thru the settling in period and high enough lvl to survive a bit better.

If you press P... then in that info screen ( where it shows you all the players names ) you can tell anyone of the players characters that are on from there. Look to the top of that window for the icon.
Select the players name then click the tell icon.
Look forward to seeing you in game, Welcome along. ;) |

Thx,
Easy when you know how! :0)
How about contacting a dm? Do they come up on the same list if present?
Any other game mechanics that are useful to know would be welcome too.
Cheers,
Sean |

Easiest way to contact a DM is to use the DM channel....... just click on the little "talk thingy" to the left of the dialogue window and change it to DM..... then type away. Don't forget to change it back when speaking to other folks though :)
If you don't get a reply then try popping into our irc channel..... as there is virtually always one around if you need any assistance.
Cheers and Welcome :)

Heres a wee trick I like for heavily used emotes.
If your charcter quite often scratches his bum say ;)
Right click an empty quick slot go to custom text macro.
Enter a name for the macro - ( BUM )
Then enter /tk followed by the emote or speach... so - ( /tk *scratches his bum* )
this will show on screen ( *scratches his bum* )
if you dont include the /tk ( talk channel ) on most servers ( including Vives? ) you will shout whatever you put in the macro, very bad form in my opinion.
Very handy tip though for quick commands and emotes. Just remember the /tk ;) |

I think you can ignore the /tk in Vives, as shouting is turned off and it'll be changed into Talk instead.

I'd just like to add something for contacting a DM. We will never, EVER just simply ignore someone asking us something politely on the DM channel IG. If you do not get a response within 3-5 minutes of when you ask, type it one more time, as we might have been in a quest or such. If still getting no response, it means there isn't a DM on at the moment . From there, either PM all DM's off the website PM system, or hop into IRC, most DM's are on IRC or the site regularly even if they can't get into the game at the time, and we can usually help you from there .

Re: Starter questions...and thx. Posted: 04 Feb 2004 01:43 PM |
k,
back again. Had some more good rp today, thx to all who were involved. Still having some probs with ooc things though. People 'tell' me and I get the message privately but when I tell back it seems to appear above my head as well as 'telling' them? Any pointers?
Also, sorry if Sirac sometimes moves oddly in mid-conversation, I have been struggling to get into the routine of clicking in the talk box before typing, but sometimes forget and hit keys that move me instead.
Other things...quite often Im only around evenings and w/ends (GMT), and my wife even moreso. Lag and system resets do seem to get really bad when more than 10-15 people on the server? Is this usual, or just related to the other thread on lag?
And is there a set time (GMT please) when the server is going to reset? Just be nice to work out sessions around that.
Please dont think all Im doing is discussing problems and complaints, really enjoy the game world and have had some great rp already, just want to ask these ooc when I get the chance.
Thx a lot for any further help,
Sean |

Only you and the receiving party sees the dialogue above your head.

'Enter" key does the same trick. This is not too bad, at least you're not a DM who hits the Save key

See other thread, and hopefully the 1.62 would do something about it as well.

The server resets every 8 hours. You can see the uptime on the mainpage; there's also in-game warning an hour before. Resets are quite quick now... (it used to take about 15-20 minutes on the pre-George era. Thank the DMs again ) As for crashes, unfortunately we don't schedule those

Tell above your head is fine; only you and they see it.
Lag gets mad at the moment; there's a problem with a few things it seems. It isn't normally like that, though. It's the lag -spikes- which kill right now.
Resets are every 8 hours, however crashses reset the timer. So there isn't a set time.
Really well RPed today, Barnas thinks that Sirac the PC is well RPed and nice. And no-one's stood up quite so competantly as you did to Fri'el without getting her mad before, so kudos. =P

Your "tell" responses do appear over your head, but nobody else sees them, so you don't have to worry about that. Additionally, if you feel that "tells" take you out of your RP experience, you're certainly not obligated to respond and are more than welcome to tell the "teller" that you don't like it. In fact, you can even turn them off, although I wouldn't recommend it, since sometimes we DM types will communicate with you via "Tell".
We all have issues with forgetting to hit the enter key, and we all know what it looks like when somebody does it, so i wouldn't be overly concerned with that. In fact, every DM here at least once has either paused or saved the game by doing this. ;)
We've had some issues with lag spikes, but it's typically not common. I've seen well over 20 players and 4 DMs on at once without problems. As with all things internet, it comes and goes.
Well the questions have been answered by the time I got this posted... see what happens when you walk away mid-post? ;P |

Addendum: Players can't see how long it's been up for I think
You do get that 1 hour warning though. |

Re: Starter questions...and thx. Posted: 04 Feb 2004 02:02 PM |
The text will always appear above your head when you tell someone, however, you are the only person that will see it, unless the recipient is standing near you as well.
A handy tip for when your involved in deeper conversation, just hit the Enter key before you type. It does the same as clicking in the convo line. Though I often go to type a quick response and miss that too. Its especially noticible when DM's forget to hit enter and type a 'G' as that will attempt to save the mod, which usually results in a server crash.
Also, for sending a message to a DM, instead of clicking on the talk mode, you can just put a /dm in front what you want to say. This text wont appear over your head though. This function also works for racial languages and summon speak (See thread in the Essential Information Forum). Though of course, this is broken in the current version as we try to find ways to reduce lag.
On that note, there has been a large increase in lag with the conversion to HotU. We are diligently working to find ways to reduce it, as well, Bioware has a new patch coming soon (they just released the Beta) that may offer some relief as well.
The server is not scheduled to reset at a certain time of day, but resets on an 8 hour cycle (ideally). You will get a warning in the 'server' window 1 hour before the reset and again at 10 minutes before and every minute after that. Unfortuantly, we havn't found a way yet to provide advanced warning for server crashes . Also, If we put an update up, you'll not get the 1 hour warning, though the person putting the update up should give a couple minutes of warning.
Keep the questions and comments coming. They're helpful not only to you, but to other players, and the DM's/Admins as well.
Edit: *looks up at all the responses that were faster than mine*
At least I have the excuse of doing work inbetween typeing the above |

Re: Starter questions...and thx. Posted: 04 Feb 2004 03:13 PM |
Don't know if this will help anyone, but...
In the Control Options section of NWN you can re-map various keys. I would highly recommend mapping "Rest" and "Save" to completely unused keys (preferably on a keyboard that isn't attached to your PC. :P).
As an example, I have "Rest" mapped to "Numpad -".
Another tip (forgive me if someone mentioned this above. I'm absolutely pants when it comes to reading comprehension...): If you need to "Tell" a player something, and they've already spoken or "Told" to you, you can click on their portrait in the Chat section of your text messages, and this will bring up in your Chat bar a "/tp" command that will be targetted to the correct player. Another nice feature about doing it this way, rather than going through the player list, is that the "/tp" will be targeted to the player's GamespyID, which can help match faces to forum accounts and what have you.
Hope this helps. :D
