Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] wtf
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] bats see invis?!
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] No way :(((
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Hear, and wtf, you were killed by bats?
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] Bloody.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] 18k gp, 1.5k xp.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] How much xp/gp?
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] :x
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] ..
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Well. I lose 1k more xp than you when I die, so at least you have that to console you.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] I f--- hate this server.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] AND I died twice already for the dumbest reasons ever.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Gasp!?!?
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Blashpemy!
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] *slap*
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] ..The death here is so annoying.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] I'm SOOOO careful
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] And I die
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] Poof, all my XP and gold that I made gone.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Happens, man. Part of the game. GAME.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Do you really want to see how many times I died more than you?
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] It's f--- not true when you can't do anything withj your gold here.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Hell - I was THIS close to leveling and died TWICE. TWICE, do you realize that now I need to earn like 70% of the XP for this level again?
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] other servers havE: less severe punishments, banks, stuff you can buy/sell to store gold, notes 'tever!
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] "Here" = NWN, not Vives.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Look, it is part of the GAME.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] It's f--- annoying.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Fine.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] ..I just worked who knows how many hours
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] And sold half my rings
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] I just lost all that I made from the last 30 rings.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] And all the XP I made in...who knows how much time.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] I hear you. But this is part of the game.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] Ffffs.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] If you want you can post it in the forums.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] "Oh yeah, bats have true seeing" "Don't die" "Teee-heeee". Here are the posts I'm gonna get.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Right, because you see the Vives community diss players all the time. Jesus man, get real. Just take a look in the Flames forum, you're not the first.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] It's the since when bats do 20 damage, ignore my 21 concentration, and kill me while invis.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Bats or dire bats?
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] dire
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Cause dire bats ARE kinda mean.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Post, then.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] and now I'm walking with 180 lbs of bronze because I can't f--- put them in my room 'cause they'll disappear.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] Post what?
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Your frustration.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Whatever you just told me, post in the Flames forum. That's what it's there for.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] "Oh, didn't you know that bats are blind creatures that can hear you step and drink the blood of halfling sorceresses?"
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] How long have you been playing here?
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] I don't know.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Almost a month, if I recall?
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] w/e, why?
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Have you EVER seen the Vives community diss or mistreat players like thisd?
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] this*
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] You know what was the answer I got regarding gold on the mric channel?
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] What?
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] "Don't store in containers, don't die"
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] If that's in any way supporting, then I might as well kill myself with a fireball.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] They weren't being mean, they were being sarcastically sympathetic.. Everyone carries their gold. Everyone tries not to die. But it's part of the game.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Now I'm telling you, either you post this or I will. I have this entire conversation logged and if you don't post what you just told me in the Flames forum, I will.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] Post it, I don't care.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] I'm serious.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] I'm going to ctrl+c ctrl+v it.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] things that suck about vives: no cep, 2 mins irl = 1 hour ig, death system big time.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Post your opinion then.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] I don't wanna.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] And the no-cep thing is because Vives has so much custom content - most of the CEP content - from way before CEP even existed.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] Oh, and vives forums are compeltely useless.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] wth? How so?
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] They don't help at all./
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] .... Do you post?
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] Nope, and I stopped bothering reading there things.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Why?
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] It only gets me way more confused and way further away than what I want.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] ....?
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] When I looked up gold in rental chests.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] And?
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] I reached the conclusion that gold can be placed in there.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] I maybe no t a bloody genius, but the fact that my report card's average is 97 proves that I'm not blunt stupid.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Your average is 97?Expressionless
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] Now why the heck would I get the entire opposit of the truth? Because it f--- written in such a way.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] 2 years ago warning: don't put gold. 1 year old warning: don't put gold. less than that post: you can put gold.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] wtf did they expect me to do?
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Would you stop b----ing for one lousy second? It's not like they TRIED specifically to mislead you. It's not like they woke up in the morning and decided that that day they'll write something completely opposite from the truth just to get people to lose all their gold, muahaha.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] They never said you can put gold. I read that post too. >.>
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] You must have misunderstood it.
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] PD quotes a DM quotes the message you can't put gold and containers, saying all has been fixed.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] Do you want me to go check? >.>
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] I don't care, I'm trying to get my gold back by looting.
Nidarren Elaran: [Tell] *Rolls eyes* Are you going to post this or not? Because if you don't, I will, but that still strips you of any legitimacy to b---- again about this, since the forums are there SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS REASON
Cora Brightsmile: [Tell] ..Fine.

Could someone find that post that says you can put gold in the chests safely?

Since it was me who wrote the more recent public posts about gold storage and persistent containers, I would love to know where I said you could store more than 50K gp gold in the containers without problem.

I'm totally with you on those Dire Bats.

Zubeida was killed three times by one of those bats, because I just could not believe that animal empathy was not working. She has a completely ridiculous animal emp BTW (could roll a two or so and dominate an elephant...). So anyway, she goes back a couple times because I'm stubborn and gets killed everytime but the last - when she preps to anhilate with every spell and all her creatures.

SHE NEVER WAS ABLE TO DOMINATE IT! Crazy.

So I'm with you on those dire bats.

You can put gold in a rental chest, in maximum stacks of 50,000.

However as I understand things, NWN and the DB are not designed to be used in that way, and it may well go wrong. Due to the way it works, we have no record of it going wrong, and therefore we cannot confirm losses and refund gold if it does go wrong. Therefore, storing gold is done entirely at your own risk. That's gold.

In regards to CEP, Vives is about a year and a half older than the CEP, and already had most of the CEP content in its haks before the CEP was made. Why would we go through the server and totally redo everything just to use the CEP, when we'd have additional haks anyway? We're not a CEP world, and never will be. It'd take hundreds of hours to go through the 700ish areas and completely redo every creature, custom placeable, and item.

2 mins RL=1 hour IG is hardcoded NWN. No-one can change that. It's definately imperfect, but is NWN, and can't be changed.

Death system? It's harsh. Very fair complaint. All I can do is repeat the somewhat less than comforting mantras of "Party up" and "Be careful". You'll still die, and it will still hurt- but I choose to believe that it's better than playing a game with no risk and no punishment for loosing.

As for the bats? I'll go on record saying that those bats are daftly overpowered and need to be fixed. One of them nearly took down my level 12 the other day. Nasty as you like...
Though, since bats see using sound-based echolocation, being invisible wouldn't help avoid them. Therefore, I don't think that's it's unfair that they have see invisibility and high spot scores- you just can't hide from them like that.

Hope that clears some of that up, doesn't sound too agressive, and answers your indirect questions. If there's anything else, feel free to contact me or any of the other DMs- and that goes for all the rest of you, at any time. A PM to [All DMs] is the easiest way.

I understand the frustration. I'm half your level and experiencing the same problems. There are numerous times I've played and gotten spitting mad over how things turned out. And then gone out again with a chip on my shoulder and died again. It all just makes the situation that much worse.

It's really easy to start taking it personally. But it's not (at least I hope not) and level heads prevail. The encounters are insanely difficult and it sounds like even the high level characters regularly dirtnap.

I guess maybe things changed for me a little (and don't tightly hold me to this, because I'm surely going to get frustrated and mad again) when I decided that success in Vives doesn't equate with how much gold you have or the level you are, rather how much fun you're having. I think if you're first level the other players here will make you just as welcome and be as inclusive as if you are 15th.

And thanks for the warning on the bats. I was about to go face a few soon. I think that'll wait a while.

Oh don't worry about it. Zubeida now is probably about as tough in HTH as Timik

But does that mean that Timik is ouigh enough to face them? Or that he will equally dirtnap? I leave you to decide.

Those bears, man... bears... they come out of the closet at night, now...

(muffled)"...beeeaaarsss...."

As I recall, there first and most important warning/suggestion for playing on this server was not to go it alone when hunting. There are severly overpowering creatures out that somewhat at random, and they transition instantly so don't bother running away. Actually, I really hate that, but I don't think it's anything that can be "fixed".

Level 6 for two months, now! Woo hoo!

Re: dire bats.

If I recall, they don't actually attack unless the player attacks them? (They certainly used to be that way). I'll test them later. If they still behave that way, then you won't get much sympathy from me. (I stuck my fingers in a meat grinder and it hurt...). On the other hand, if they do attack players aggressively, I'll see that they get toned down.

Re: gold in chests.

I consider the essential information forum to be the final word on rules and warnings. In that thread (which you all have read and understood, right?) it states clearly:

2) Do not put gold or containers (magic bags and the like) in rental chests or mailboxes, anything lost as a result of doing so will not be replaced.

Does anyone not understand that? Does anyone find that unclear? If so, let me know.

There have been discussions as to the specifics of gold storage in chests if you persist in doing so against the recommendation in the essential information (B has more or less summarized it above).

There have been bugs in the persistent chest storage code (I know, because I put some in) and I have mentioned that they were fixed. At no time have I ever said that the "more than 50K gold in a stack stored in a chest and it gets lost" bug has been fixed.

I know that because it is a design limitation of nwn and *cannot* be fixed under our current system.

So please, if anyone finds a post expressing otherwise, I would love a link to it so I can correct the information.

Summary: If you have stored gold in a persistant container against the recommendations as laid out in the essential information forums, which you have all read and understood, and the gold gets lost, it is gone. Period. End of Gold.

You are, of course, free to whine about it just as I am free to completely ignore it.

- Paul

PS: If anyone finds information in the essential information forums that is no longer correct, or unclear, please feel free to speak up and point it out. I'd love to fix it.

of course, I should probably set a flock of hostile dire chickens loose in the Great Plains and will have to soup them up a bit to reflect the lost of strength of the innocent, harmless, non-aggressive dire bats...

I don't think its a bad thing that dire bats attack, too many creatures just stand there all 'blue' and neutral, waiting for a PC to walk up and smack them with a critical, more things should stick up for themselves. Be honest, if you were in their cave you where likely going to kill them right? Thats not really how I play - but I know theres a lot of you who just reek havoc as you go killing everything that movesTongue out- "yes! but its not fair if it fights back!" ... besides if it wasnt for people going in there and taking a dirtnap, their wouldnt be any corpses to 'loot'

Re: gold in chests.

Found the thread that talks about being free to take your chances with it, this thread; Important Warnings!; that states:

For those of you that have managed to get your hands on rental containers, you should be aware of the following behaviours

Gold Storage

If you store gold in your chests, be aware of the fact that due to bugs in the way that NWN engine handles the storage of gold, it is likely that you will end up losing most of what you have stored. There is nothing we can do about this. If you lose your gold, it's gone. Sorry, you have been warned, so please don't do it.

For those of you that insist on doing it, this is a suggestion: Store it in groups of 50,000. No more. If you do it this way, there is a greater chance that you will be able to keep your gold stored without losing it.

However, if you do lose it, it's gone. A thief in the night came by for a visit and took the excess.

PS: If you have a mailbox, don't ever store gold in there. Anyone can come along and remove it. If you do so, and your gold goes missing, A thief in the night came by for a visit and took the excess

Storing Packs in Rental Containers

Yes, you can do it, and use that to effectively by-pass the 20 items limit. However, be warned that sometimes the contents of the packs can get lost. We don't know why, but again, it is a bug in the inventory handling of the NWN engine. If you lose something that was stored in a pack in a chest, it is gone. If you have an important item you wish to keep, don't store it in a pack in a rental container. This is the sure way to keep your item.

Sympathies. Vives' death system is frustrating, yes.
2 mins RL=1 hour IG is hardcoded NWN. No-one can change that. It's definately imperfect, but is NWN, and can't be changed.
While I know nothing of the game mechanics, I'm pretty sure that in another PW I play in, 1 NwN Hour is 4 RL minutes Barnas.

Indeed, on a prior PW I was on, they had something like 38 RL minutes = 1 hour IG (can't really remember now, but I know it was some absurdly long time, but offset just enough so that it wasn't always the same hour of the day when you logged on (if you were always only able to logg in at the same RL time every day))

This was a low magic / permadeath server, where the average PC level was 2, maybe 3... so the fact that time passed so (relatively) slowly there realy gave value to the few, very vulnerable, magic types that were fool hardy enough to try.

But yes, I know that the passage of time can be altered.

To go off on the tangent about time ratio...

One of the reasons my PCs run a lot is because otherwise the spells go off way too quickly. Especially at low levels this is very inconvenient. By the time you're done talking, your protections/buffs have ended. Bleh.

Back on topic...

Losing XP due to dying is tough, but it happens to everyone. Dying because you attacked something that wasn't going to attack you in the first place... Well, it's on the same scale as dying because you're too stupid to remember the order in which you have to cast spells and then getting offed by duergar (the latter is entirely aimed at myself as PDW knowsWink). Losing 200 xp at level 3 is bad, losing 14500 at epic levels is a bit more painful. It happens to everyone.

The gold stacking was clearly explained on the essential information thread. I've lost gold in the past too, when it wasn't known that it did that. It sucked back then, but at least now there is a warning.

A suggestion: In a previous server I played on there was this banking system. Not sure how it worked exactly, but what I took it for (and anyone who knows what I'm talking about, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) is a script that keeps a record of how much gold a PC "deposits" or "withdraws", thus saving the gold, instead of storing it in NWN's bugged containers. I suppose a similar thing in Vives could be a nice addition. Banks in big places like PR, Ferein and Midor could really prove useful to many people.

Just my quick 2 cents.

But the Sisters would surely go bankrupt if they weren't given the option to rifle the pockets of fallen heroes and take a portion as a non-negotiable donation for the hospital

True. My characters used to make donations until I realized that they were fleecing me everytime I was brought in unconscious.

*bump*

Got to let a bit of steam off, and I think I can hijack this thread for it.

1. Why do you (the builders) hate archers? Honestly, I could have a nice life as a tailor, tinkerer, whatever... animals all over the place, enough sand in the desert where I can even get to with a lvl 1 char if I'm a bit careful... but... if my lvl 13 loses almost 6000 xp in a few hours just to find the basic material for arrows - ash trees, how is a lower level supposed to train that skill? That leads to....

2. Death penalty. Ok, I see it, it's harsh and it's meant to be that way. I won't complain about that, but... with a penality that harsh I wish there was a realistic chance to avoid it, and dang, 2 out of 3 dirtnaps are just due to these 1-minute *#*!!ing lag spikes! That's the point where it's getting not only frustrating but really expensive, because my keyboard flies straight through the room against the wall on the other side... sheez! oof, I think I should make a new char and kill rats again, or make a bard and hang around in a tavern singing all day long...

That had to be said, but however, I wouldn't play here if the server wasn't that great, so keep on doing what you're doing and don't mind my silly rants... um... wait, do. Add ash trees, reduce lag. :)

1. I don't think the builders hate archers. Crafting sucks at lower levels period, since all crafting skills (in my experience) take level into account for percentage of success. And how do you lose XP finding materials?

2. It's a lot less harsh here than other servers, lemme tell you. A good portion of the other popular RP persistant worlds have perma death as a default, with very slim chances of resurrection at all.

As for trees... yeah. I think it's been mentioned before. The areas are really beautiful, but I think a lot of lag could be reduced if a good chunk of placables were removed. Don't get me wrong: I loooove the details. But I think I'd rather have a smoothly playable server than a server with surprise picnic lunches in hidden alcoves, or with areas so clogged with trees you can't angle the camera in any way to actually see your avatar.
