Charisma Tip?
Posted: 08 Jan 2004 08:11 PM
Can anyone enlighten me as to the use of the charisma tip in my inventory. Ive popped it in my vives tool box, but have still to find its use. I know its to be used on another character but I dont want to cause offence, by using said tip on another player *winks*

Anyone?

From a confused charasmatic character unsure of what use his tip is...

P.s. sorry about the really bad inuendo there.

Current Characters - Worik the Wanderer, Joda Zod, and Kango.

It's just for getting an idea of the charisma score of the player you use it on. I'm not sure, but the last time I used it it was a bit buggy, and inconsistent.

Question Authority!

*nods* I believe it gives you varying statements about the person you use it on based on a roll of somesort plus that persons CHA modifier.

You know what would be neat? A mirror, maybe in clothing stores, where you could click and get your -own- charisma reading.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, for the mirror thing. Oronk the half-orc thinks he's downright sexyTongue out.

Second, charimsa in 3e D&D is not looks or attitude, its personal magnitue and personal power.

Well then, the charisma tip means nothing because it's all based on somebody seeing you from across the room. You can't possibly determine a person's personal magnetism and power just by one glance.

But, never mind. I'll find out the answer OOC, like most of the people on the server probably do.

about the quote : Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, could we make the charisma tip work with race and aligment too, it would be more realist right? but iguess it would be long to scripts, we would not need to change the text, only to put the variable Race Sex and Aligment that would define what sentence the character will draw, only an idea

The only way I see charisme tip working is this. First of all wont work with a dice. If you think someone is beautifull you will say the same all the time you look at them. So used several times it would give the same result and not diferent answers from "wow cant take the eyes off of her", to "How uglyyyy". So it would have to be a static thing. And we would have to make a small mistake that would be associate char only to beauty.
But the way I see it, it could work with wisdom and char, a wise person can have charisma not only apearence make a person charismatic, so it would work with wisdom and char in a static way not rolling like it is atm, and then with race and sex. So it would be something like char modifier+ wis modifier+Xbonus for race+X for sex.
Example:
Elf male looks at Elfie with char mod 2, and wis mod 3
Lets say bonus for being for the same race would be 5
Then for diferent races less bonus, and acording to races that match more or less more bonus or less:
Human4
Half-Orc2
etc...
Same sex 4, oposite sex -4 (or do you want to include gay chars IG that can be changed but it would add more work to script)
2(char)+3(wis)+5(race)+4(sex)=14 then a table with the result and the message it says. Doesnt seem to hard to script.

Q what do you think?

Why do people always want to roll for everything? Can't you just wing it, adlib it or roleplay it? Dias' reactions to characters are mostly based on the other's personality (which is IMHO a reflection of cha).

As Fenarisk said, someone with a low cha can still think of himself as sexy. And even when 99.999% doesn't think so, there's always the chance that someone actually agrees with it. I only used the charisma tip to see what it was, but since then never again.

Ok it's a game and it has game mechanics, but that doesn't mean you should roll for every single thing your character does. Even in pnp I never used the reaction tables. A PC may have a charisma of 20, but if they act high and mighty, thinking they own the place, then the NPCs or monsters will react correspondingly. That's also why I don't use skill checks such as bluff, diplomacy, etc.

I've also been in games where people roll checks to see if they remember something (actually because the player has forgotten and the DM still remembers). Well tough luck, I also happen to forget things in real life and I don't roll a die to see if I suddenly recall it.

My advice: look less at the numbers and roleplay it. ;)

Luther McIath: I see, so [X is] the right person in the wrong place with the wrong people at the wrong time.

Phoneix the char tips is IG, doesnt work this was only a way to fix it. What your saying is remove the char tip, well ok for me I never used it, really once tested to see what it was and never used it again.

Sides, Lytton made it!

For fun!

I thought that'd be clear judging the emits the thing gives? ;)
There were some plans looooooong ago to expand the possibilities on the Charisma Tip. Use it at your leisure, but not as default rule to form an opinion on the beauty of another.

Why can't I PM myself?

And you can have fun with it. Use it on someone new you met as a basis for your initial reaction to that character and go from there. If you get a not to favourable result, it might mean a few minutes of talking, or a few days of actions to get over it, but either way, you've got a basis for a whole RP scenario right in the palm of your hand.

I dont think its too useful for examining PC's your character already knows, as you've already formed your own opinion of them, and you dont need a charisma roll to change that impression. I think of it a tool to use to form that all important 'first impression'. When you see someone new, you immediatly form a picture in your head of what that person is like based on how they stand, how they dress, how clean they are, etc. So if you like, use the charisma tip to do so. Or if you like don't. I normally don't, but writing this, I think I may start to.

Another use could be on NPC's as you meet them through DM events. Perhaps if I used it on an NPC trying to convince me some other person stole this heirloom from him, and I get an unfavourable response on the charisma tip, I'd more more untrustworthy of him than normal, forcing the DM to do more work to get you on sideWink.

Just a few random thoughts. How you use it, or if you do, is up to you.

I do like the charisma tip, as I find it a very useful tool :)

I'm not sure on the wording though. Perhaps if it was worded more towards the character you're pointing the tip at - 'She stands tall and proud, radiating confidence' or 'He withdraws into himself, not wanting the attention'. As I'm not so sure that some characters would 'leer' at people with high CharismaTongue outNotice, yes, but I think that Charisma is best 'shown' as a pose, or arrogant swagger, or what have you, rather than your reaction to a person. Reactions to Charisma vary hugely - but a person's confidence in themselves brings out similiar reactions between people.

I belive call it Charism tip is were the rror is. This was supost to be something IMO, to add some realism, since heads are limited and we cannot know how prety someone is just looking to their chars, so it would tell us that based in the ir char modifier, wrong or not the idea had potencial, but the way it is now..it doesnt make much sence to me really.

You should be able to tell how physicly attractive someone is with the widget. However, it shouldn't really be opposed CHA rolls. It should be sort of 10/11 average, 12/13 good looking, 14/15 exeptional ETC.

Of course, the flaw in this is obvious. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but one thing is for sure beautifull people are considered by a majority, beauty doesnt = love, I belive when you look to someone you should know if that char is UGLY like hell or prety goodlooking, looking to heads you cant see that and your not going to ask ey are you prety? lol So yes Barnas that would be how it should work. A small error to get some apearence results roll a dice doesnt work since one time you'll say he/she is prety another time it will say UGLY.

Also removing the worship emote from the CHA tip would be good. I remember a PC using it on Fri'el and getting down on hands and knees to worship her. Either that or they used the emote rod to do it. Which is just disturbing...

True. But to play a very attractive character, I think you need a fair few points in CHA.
It's the sacrifice you pay to get that benefeit.

I play Vandle as charismatic, although he has a severe scar from above his right eye down to his cheek. That's why I gave him a 10 charisma. The scar takes away from his looks, but his words are charismatic.
