A funny thing happened on the way to Icy Vale
Posted: 01 Dec 2003 02:16 PM
Well, for the group that I was with, I have to apologize. For some reason I am no longer able to play NWN online. When I attempt to log on to any server I now get one of the following two messages.

"Unauthorized CD-Key"
"CD Key is in use. Please wait 5 minutes"

So, until I can get this resolved with Bioware or Atari, or until it fixes itself, I won't be around. Take it as another of Coruva's "meetings". Of course, this would have to happen when I took a couple of personal days off at work that I had to use before the end of the year!

On the off chance that any of you might know the reasoning behind this or have any suggestions on what I can do on this end, please let me know. Otherwise, thanks much to the staff that reloaded the server for me. I appreciate you takin the time to give me a hand!

See you all soon, hopefully!!

Oh...and yes it is a legal copy of both NWN and SOU!

Ahhh!

This brings back memories....... This is a known issue, so might i suggest you do a search on Bioware forums? there is (apparently) a fix.

I had similar issues way back with the original NWN (a year or so ago), and after a while it seemed to cure itself....... so it might just mean waiting for 20 minutes or so.... but I would still suggest doing a search. Unfortunately I feel a little under the Weather and need to retire to my bed, so haven't the time to look for you. If it's not resolved by tomorrow though, I'll check again.

cheers

Ara

Thanks Arathon. I have seen the posts that you were mentioning I think. Seems as if it was a v1.30 issue. There are other posts from players that have experienced similar problems, but yet one from Bioware that states what exactly is the cause of it. Other than that for some reason, Bioware seems to think that my CD Key is still being used somewhere. I have sent emails to the appropriate companies...so in a week or so I should get a response back! Perhaps its just a time issue. I have waited a half hour or more, but still get the same message. Though on occasion it has connected me, but with none of my characters and noone online... so I'm obviously not really logged on..must just be a glitch with NWN. I have evening plans today, so perhaps I will try again when I get back home late tonight.

Thanks again for the advice

Ugh I hope this isn't the case but .. I was reading on the vault the other day and they mentioned a particulary irritating net worm aholes have made that actually also steal cd keys to several games .. and he said nwn was one of em . Forgot exactly who said that . but it's one of the bioware guys answering something from the forums that got posted on the nwvault front page.

CD-Key Scam:
Just a reminder: Never give your CDKey or Account Password away.

BioWare will never ask you for your CD Key except when you first register your game. There will never be the need for us to "update" our databases (or any other stupid reasons these scam artists will try to invent to steal your CDKey). If you receive such a message as a private message on our boards, please forward it to Derek French. If you receive a request for your CDKey via mail, ignore it, we don't ask for your CD Key. If it looks like someone tried to make a mail look authentic, you could forward it with full mail headers to Derek French as well, so we can see if further actions need to be taken. Additionally I really recommend that you take the time to apply the proper security updates to your operation system, install a decent antivirus software and optionally a personal firewall as there seems to be an annoying trend: Some of the more recent internet worms are trying to steal CDKey information for a variety of games from your computer, including Neverwinter Nights.

Thats the part I was talking about. I do hope thats not what happened tho .

Saw that message as well, Gasher. And no, I most definitely did not give my key out to someone. Thanks for the idea though.

Well, on a positive note, the problem seemed to remedy itself in about 24 hours. So for future reference to anyone else that has the problem, just give it time. From the forums I read the only thing that helps is waiting it out.

Wow, sorry ya had to wait that long. I've experienced it in the past and it's cleared up in less than 5 minutes. So apparently YMMV.

Your Mileage May Vary

;)
