Theft Out Of Homes? Posted: 08 Nov 2003 07:59 AM |
Is it possible for someone to pick the lock on our homes? I ask because I have just recently been losing items out of my chest. They are all expensive ones, some belonged to her friends, and one had sentimental value. The alternative is that someone PPd the key from Loli's pocket, which since PP is duplicating items would not be detected. This is not realistic, and if a person found their key missing they would certainly have the lock changed. If it is burglary, then improved security devices should be for sale.
And if it neither of the above, where are Loli's items going? *raises eyebrow* |

| It's not lockpicking. Many a time I've tried looting peoples houses. Just doesn't work. Including yours :D But I won't tell you which of my many rogues tried it. But here's a hint. It wasn't Hans! :P |

| I don't think its possible to loot houses. Sometimes if you have items stored in a miner's bag, Ox pack, or magic bag they can just dissapear. I lost several molds and arrow heads by placing them in a bag then into the chest. |

I guess it was the miner's bag bug then, but these items had been there forever, and it was only certain weapons out of one bag that disappeared most recently. Prior to that it was just one suit of armor. Their value in gold doesn't matter so much, but the loss of trust would matter a great deal if it was not a bug.
And yes, Tasra, I was suspecting Hans because one item was a very nice crossbow. So, I am glad to hear the houses cannot be looted. It would have made some very bad feelings between Loli and the rest of the community if her kindness had been repaid in that fashion. ;) |

Currently bags, sacks, boxes and any other 'container' aren't supported by persistent containers. Essentially, there's a bug in my DB code that doesn't handle certain scenarios for containers in containers. I've just never gotten around to fixing it. Anyway, I was under the impression that the persistent containers knew to disallow bags, sacks, etc... it seems this is not the case.

-Q I was told that, but then when Loli was RPing ingot trade with Jade Knight via Gasher, I learned OOC that miner's bags working just fine in chests. I will tell you that I, slink, felt really stupid at that point for having gone to so much trouble to work around the inability to store ingots and didn't much appreciate the feeling.
I'm pretty sure that putting stackables in containers in containers breaks the chest until the next reset. Otherwise it works, or had up until very recently. However, it is possible that having someone enter or leave the game while the chest code is recursing the container which was just placed inside it would drop items. I'm only guessing how you wrote it, mind you.
Anyway, if you plan on suddenly blocking miner's bags in chests I would appreciate it if you gave me the chance to have Loli take hers out, since miner's bags can no longer be made in Tailoring. |

Yes, but if I RP this bug it will have serious IG consequences. Therefore it did not happen IG. |

I've not recently done anything along these lines nor have I proclaimed an edict of any sort. I was simply recounting, for your benefit, a certain aspect of the implementation of the database code and my impression of the code for persistent containers.

Oh, and along these lines, if anything is done, it'll be to fix my bug in the DB code such that containers in containers will work.

Sorry, Q, I didn't mean to sound pre-emptory (or however you spell it). I was going back and forth between the game and the forum this morning, and then had to stop midday to install a modem on my computer so my husband could "watch" RT sports on broadband while I play on dialup. Thus I was short. |

| I was in a couple of places the other day , where it said , so and so's room etc , went into a couple of these rooms and the chests contained things like 2500gp , +5 rings , needless to say I never touched them , dont even know if I could , I realised they belonged to another player , and being "good" was beyond me anyway . If I was a rogueish character surely even then they should'nt be taken . These places where open btw not locked . Very tempting though :p |

Re: Theft Out Of Homes? Posted: 11 Nov 2003 08:24 AM |
| There is a problem that I mentioned to someone in PM, back when I first got my room. If the outer door is "unlocked" by the person with the key, it cannot be "locked" again. Therefore "open" will leave the door locked when it is closed again, but "unlock" will not. At least I believe the former to be true. I know the latter is true. |

+5 rings? Please use the bug reporter to tell the staff where you got them. |

Re: Theft Out Of Homes? Posted: 12 Nov 2003 12:36 PM |
| actually. there is a way to loot homes, tho it is alot more involved that just picking a lock (since you cant pick your way in, it requires a special key). You can however, hide outside their door and wait for them to open it and then walk in, when they leave you'll be inside ready to do whatever you want. If you want to make holmes secure put stuff in a locked chest that cant be picked. |

| Since you can pickpocket our keys away from us, along with the armor off our backs, what good will that do? |

| well, if you have alot of stuff the chances of getting your key are relativly low and people that pick from the same person more than once or twice a day (real life day) need something bad done to them ... something very bad. |
