I finally got NWN2

And I couldn't possibly be more disappointed.

It's like they sat down, wrote out a list of all the worst possible choices they could have made in regards to making a successor to the original NWN, and then did everything on the list.

I'm in shock.

And so I have heard. NWN 1 is still fun to build with so I don't feel the need to go to "2".

I have to admit, one of the things I really really missed in NWN2 was inventory tetris. I think they tried to make the interface feel more like WoW, and I think they ended up removing a lot of the soul of the original.

I got NWN2 working on my macbook last year, but it was tricky. I have to open the game via a piece of software that simulates 3-D modeling that my lousy graphics driver can't handle. Also I can only run the basic installation of the game - any updating and the game realizes that my computer isn't up to the graphical challenge and stops running right there. Oh, and all this is in a partition running Windows (why bother? I'm stubborn). I've played through the OC 2 or 3 times and started a few more. I haven't tried any modules or servers.

I actually like the art and modeling a little better in NWN2. Somehow the proportions and the armor appeal to me more, even though the animation is kind of stiff. I got used to the camera. And as ever, I heart crafting.

Also, I think somebody who worked on the story for NWN2 also worked on the potty-mouthed Fallout games, which I loved (there's even a guard in one area that says "Move along, citizen."). I played through those games quite a few times. Even though the railroading in the story is considerable, something there translates.

Going from NWN2 back to NWN is a pleasure. I like that it's stylized and cartoonish. And of course, it actually works on my machine! I agree w/ Hene, NWN is absolutely adequate to do just about anything.

I remember when NWN2 was initially released, somebody produced a list of like 100 legitimate things wrong with the game, and while they did work on that list, the truth is that as you make the game more intricate, you wind up making customizing the game way more difficult. What people wanted was little more than a graphics and rules update on the same system; if it's not broken, don't fix it, right? What they got was a huge hassle, and producing persistent worlds was way more difficult, if not impossible. And then nobody had a computer that could run the game smoothly for a year, it's really no wonder NWN2 didn't go anywhere.

Thats what I was thinking when I started toying around with it as well. They really tried to do way more than was needed. There should have just been a graphical update, and more flexibility added within the engine, but it seems like they put in less.

A couple of things stood out to me right away. One, no saving up skill points to spend at later levels. Sure, a restriction like that has its place, but it should have been optional rather than forced by default. In the end, NWN is a multiplayer game and restrictions like that should be set from server to server. The same goes for the non-stacking bonuses from items. It's like they were only concerned with making choices in the game engine that suited their campaigns.

I was pretty annoyed with most of the graphics, spell effects, vfx on weapons, and the recycled voice-sets as well. And as pretty as some of the outdoor areas are, what was wrong with the tile-set approach? With tile-sets, minimal information needed to be exchanged between client and server, but now to play online with my slow connection is almost impossible. It just keeps loading and loading and loading.

I know all of this is old news, but I'm just now catching up and I feel like complaining. If I didn't want to be able to be part of Vives II when it comes out I'd uninstall this game, sell it on eBay, and just go back to the original NWN.

Don't quote me on this, but I think one way to slow the load time when entering a new area is to cache some of this information on the client machine. I thought Vulpina did this for her PW, but I don't know for sure.

Development for Vives 2 however slowed to a halt some years ago now. If other folks wanted to get going on it now, I'd be happy to help out, but I haven't heard much on that front.

Ideally we'd either make vives 2 in NWN 1, or use another engine. I don't believe there is enough interest to use NWN2 for V2. At this point if I am unsuccessful in putting some event focused play together for Vives 1, it might be fun to make a couple stand alone Vives mods and host them for some non PW style play with existing Vives characters. I should be building commercial projects in my free time, but I do have the builder's bug right now with NWN. Sooner or later however I will have to go back to Magus Games and finish my own projects. I just wish I had more time and money. Retiring from my day job to make games for awhile would be a blast.

It would be great to see you around more. I'll be around Vives for awhile too. I had really missed it.

I've given up on NWN2. NWN is more than enough AND with what Project Q is accomplishing, it looks like a totally different game. Check out Lord of Worm's PW you can download on the Vault (Look for Arbor Falls) and tell me that you are not impressed.

My wife and I are playing in it (running it locally in a VM with Win2003 and NWNX) and having a blast. It's what NWN2 should have been.

Me three! No other games or servers holding my attention, I'm just getting into Vives as I can.

I wonder what it would take to get Bioware to collaborate with the Project Q folks to release and enhanced version of the original NWN, something like the recently released enhanced version of The Witcher.

Not that I was all that thrilled with The Witcher either, but I know I'd dump another 40 bucks into Bioware's pockets for something like that.

I might be missing something, but Project Q doesn't look THAT impressive. Given Phoenix's and Ficcy's endorsements of it, I must be missing something. My favorites from Q are the CODI characters which we also seem to have in Vives. Very nice work. I wonder why that level of quality was not put into the original game.

Lord of Worms' tile sets on the other hand are very nice and so much fun to play with. I would like to redo Mirghul with some of that stuff. Seasonal Forest and the Mirkwood one have a lot of potential.

I really need to walk away from NWN and get back to my own games, but all these community art assets in NWN make it hard to put down. It is addictive.
