A Call to Adventure on the High Seas Posted: 13 Oct 2007 09:32 PM |
A crisp parchment is tacked to notice boards at the following public establishments: The Four Winds Inn, Doc McGillicutty's, and the Cafe Del'Mar. The title catches your attention with large, florid letters, reading
A CALL TO ADVENTURE.
A heroically illustrated caravel dominates the lower half of the broad sheet in full sail cresting an ocean swell. “Coralyn” is written prominently on the prow. Flying fish and dolphin leap playfully in the “Coralyn's” wake.
Glory! Fame! Fortune!
Looking to make a name for yourself?
The Captain of The Coralyn seeks adventurers for a high seas voyage. All interested parties are encouraged to inquire immediately with Captain Corbin or his mates, Sir Alaric and Seamus Lund aboard the Coralyn. We set sail within the week.

Re: A Call to Adventure on the High Seas Posted: 15 Oct 2007 12:45 AM |
The morning following the Buckshire Faire, Corbin paced impatiently back and forth across the deck of the Coralyn. He waited. He disembarked to wander the streets of upper and lower Port. He returned. No one came for interviews.
Just before noon, one wealthy Plaza couple paid for passage to Mystique, a noble's son out for a secret escapade with a debutante. They were Corbin's age, but seemed younger, more beautiful. The girl's cheeks were flushed with the excitement of their adventure. Corbin wondered what had happened to his youth in quiet bitterness. As always his smile was hearty, smooth, welcoming. He accepted their money with the rakish grace and tact that the Plaza Nobles were accustomed to. They looked no closer. He was just another colorful character of Lower Port to them, one amongst many. Dandy had his hooked hands. Corbin his youth, and a ship named after his scandalous mother. If only they knew, he thought as he tried not to think of the thing below decks.
The winds were in their favor so he pushed the ship to speed the journey there and back. They made record time, just a few hours. As soon as the couple stepped on to the blond beach, Corbin unlashed the moorings for the return to Port.
Perhaps someone had come while they were out at sea.
Perhaps, but they did not return when he returned the Coralyn to its berth.
No one had signed up for his venture in two days. He was concerned. With or without help, he would manage the trip. The thing moved about in its quarters below. He winced at the sound of the clumsy movements.
“Don't worry, ma,” he said quietly to himself. “One way or another, you'll be you again, even if it is the last thing I do.”
((Feel free to post here folks or send me PMs if you are interested in heading out on this adventure. I'd like to find out what time people can meet so that we can get a high seas voyage arranged.)) |

Re: A Call to Adventure on the High Seas Posted: 15 Oct 2007 09:50 AM |
A dwarven woman pads down the wharf where the Coralyn is berthed. Her feet are bare and pale white, legs dabbed with mud from the road and filth from the streets of Lower Port. Her toes are topped with blonde curls, and black mulch is deposited between them. She appears as a witch, or a perhaps a gypsy, with voluminous skirts, weathered black cloak, an loose leather bodice over her blouse, bangles on her wrists and her ankles, all in all a wild country look.
Her hair is straight to her shoulders and luminous blonde, and she is beardless. Corbin knows her face immediately. This dwarf knew his mother.
"So," she says to the ship's master, "What have you got planned?" |

Re: A Call to Adventure on the High Seas Posted: 15 Oct 2007 10:32 AM |
Tamuk Greyeyes heard the two men talking as they pulled into the bay on the tiny island of Mystique. One was the captain, he thought, the other just some common working sort…it didn’t really matter. The content of their discussion, however, piqued his interest as it was likely to result in his monetary gain should he choose to act. His rum fund was growing thin.
He yawned and stretched out under the sun upon the sand as the man and woman who had disembarked from the ferry made their way up the hill behind him. Tamuk thought for a moment to warn the couple about the cantankerous parrots atop the mound but they had gone from earshot in the process of his consideration and most of all, he didn’t care enough anyway to bother to raise his voice in their direction.
He redirected his attention to the boat to watch it pull away from the beach. He’d talk to one of them later about that thing…whatever it was. They’d be back…sure as low tide. He relaxed back into the sand with his hands behind his head and fell asleep. |

SUNKEN TREASURE Part the First
Our tale begins in THE FOUR WINDS INN with Barret Victor, the old paladin, greeted by two companions, Monah Bonesetter, the dwarven ... ahem ... lady, and Archibald De Breenie the IV, a distinguished son of Port Royale Plaza... Barret Victor: *Snores on the couch* Monah Bonesetter: *looks quietly on Barret's sleeping form* Barret Victor: *Snore snore* Archibald De Breenie: *snickers* some things never change.... Monah Bonesetter: *muddy up to her ankles from the Northern Highway* Archibald De Breenie: Well, at least someone is awake *eyeing Monah* Good day. Stilll raining out there, I suppsoe? Monah Bonesetter: *moves to Archibald's side to get a better look at Barret* Barret Victor: *Snores more* Monah Bonesetter: He's still asleep? Archibald De Breenie: Would you expect anything else? Monah Bonesetter: What's the magic word then Archibald De Breenie: a swift kick to the shin, typically.....*dryly* Monah Bonesetter: You wouldn't. Monah Bonesetter: Would you? Archibald De Breenie: No, actually I'd usually get a servant to do it for me Monah Bonesetter: Well its just the three of us here, now. Archibald De Breenie: But I suspect that if we started talking about some sin or evil or wrongdoing, he'd perk right up and begin a sermon without missing a beat. Archibald De Breenie: Hmm., yes. Where is Captain Corbin? Monah Bonesetter: *smirks* We're to meet him in Port Royale. But is something else on your mind Archibald? Monah Bonesetter: Something you think might bring Barret around to yell at you? Archibald De Breenie: Well, actually *a thoughtful gaze at her, then seems to get her meaning, a slight look of confusion* Eh...what do you mean? I haven't done anything.... Monah Bonesetter: Oh. Alright. Archibald De Breenie: But I do have a questino for you Monah Bonesetter: I'm listening. *turns away from Barret, intent on the tall young human. Archibald De Breenie: Well, I'm hardly one to be nosey, but given the circumstances of this...hmm....expedition, you seem to have some...shall we say...history with our esteemed Captain? Monah Bonesetter: Well I knew his mother, is all. Before. Archibald De Breenie: Before? Monah Bonesetter: Before what happened. Archibald De Breenie: *clears throat* What --did-- happen? Monah Bonesetter: *considers* Barret Victor: -Yawns and stretches- Archibald De Breenie: *crosses his arms across his chest, an even gaze at her* Monah Bonesetter: It's not for me to gossip. But I will say that you'd learn what became of her i fyou spent a little more time in the Lower Port. Monah Bonesetter: The seedier quarters, I mean. Barret Victor: -Coughs politely- Monah Bonesetter: I can hardly keep track of her, myself. Monah Bonesetter: Are you awake Barret? Monah Bonesetter: That's good. Might be we're keeping the captain waiting. Barret Victor: I suppose it is possible Barret Victor: Though I didn't realize I was expected to go Archibald De Breenie: Be that as it may, given the short time we have, wouldn't it be purdent to -- *frowns, looking over at Barrett* Ill-timing as always *muttered* Barret Victor: What was that you whelp? Barret Victor: *Stands* I could break you over my knee, bloody whipper snapper Archibald De Breenie: *chuckles* whelp....you must have gotten more sleep than usual. Barret Victor: When I was your age, we had /respect/ for our elders Archibald De Breenie: That was centuries ago, Barrett. Barret Victor: And now you're confusing me for an elf Archibald De Breenie: Now, the good lady says the captain is waiting. Monah Bonesetter: He's not decrepit, I don't think. Barret Victor: Come, let us walk Barret Victor: Or trot, if you can keep up Monah Bonesetter: Might be waiting. Might have taken that half-orc and left us. Archibald De Breenie: Decrepit...I like that word... The scene changes as we follow our heroes to PORT ROYALE for provisioning prior to their sea voyage...
Archibald De Breenie: *snorts* Like I should spend more time down here....*shakes his head, grimacing* Archibald De Breenie: dear gods...*sniffing* Barret Victor: Where is the Captain? Monah Bonesetter: port royale, but we've got about 15 min if you need any supplies Monah Bonesetter: I have an idea. Monah Bonesetter: Maybe we could run into Corbin's mother, if we look in the right places. Monah Bonesetter: There's a good place to look, right behind you Master De Breenie.
A sign of CROSSED CUTLASSES hangs over the door of a pub behind De Breenie.
Archibald De Breenie: *looking at her pointedly* And why we would need to do that? Monah Bonesetter: Your curiosity and mine. That is all, really. Monah Bonesetter: Do either of you need anything, before we go? I have replenished my supply of healing materials. And I've plenty of arrows. Archibald De Breenie: Fine, very well. *snaps* Let's find his mother if we can. *shakes head* No, i have what I need, save perhaps another campking kit should we need more than one Barret Victor: I could use some bandages Barret Victor: And I still have some equipment to sell off Archibald De Breenie: I'd be happy to lend you some money, Barret, if you'd buy a camping kit for me. Barret Victor: I don't need money, I just have things I am carrying I do not need to carry Barret Victor: I shall make a small trip to the shops, and alleviate my burdens Monah Bonesetter: There isn't an extra shield among your unwanted belongs, is there Barret? Archibald De Breenie: Perhaps you can rectify that situation, then, while she and I look for Corbin's mother? Barret Victor: Afraid not, ma'am Barret Victor: Some weaponry though Monah Bonesetter: *declines the two weapons outstretched* Well then. We will meet you back here, after you've bartered off these things? Barret Victor: *Nods* Monah Bonesetter: *smiles at Archibald* Monah Bonesetter: It is just this way. Archibald De Breenie: very good then Monah Bonesetter: Very convenient to the wharves. Archibald De Breenie: *frowns* in here?
Reluctance aside, caution to the wind, our heroes pass beneath the sign, and through the door to “join“ the merriment of Red Beard's patrons...
Monah Bonesetter: She could be. We will have to search a bit. Archibald De Breenie: Gggrrreeattt.....*dryly* Monah Bonesetter: We won't find her if she has gone upstairs. Monah Bonesetter: I won't go upstairs. Archibald De Breenie: Why not? Andrex: *sniff sniff.*
Andrex, the dog, distracts Archie with a well placed nose and an offer of bogroll. ((The Voice runs interference while Game_Warden hastily prepares the adventure.))
Archibald De Breenie: Get away from me, dog! Archibald De Breenie: *shakes his leg free, wiping at his robe* Andrex: *gets a little too friendly with Archie's leg* Archibald De Breenie: Goddamnit!! *looks around* Whose --mutt- is this? Monah Bonesetter: *listens at the door* Andrex: *pant pant* Archibald De Breenie: Mangey mangrel!!! Archibald De Breenie: yuck! Monah Bonesetter: Better check for your purse, sir. Andrex: *slober mouthed -and if a dog could grin, it is* Monah Bonesetter: I think Candy just made a go at it. Andrex: *busy busy with the robes* Archibald De Breenie: excuse me? *stunned look at Monah, then spins around, checking his equipment, trying to get his robes away from the dog* Archibald De Breenie: Can we get....bahhh!!....out of.....eeeewww.....here now! Monah Bonesetter: Candy. Did you think she bumped into you by accident? Or perhaps she did it for a thrill? Andrex: *pant pant* Archibald De Breenie: *picks up the ends of his robe and tries to walk quickly away from the dog* Andrex: *black glassy eyes follow Archi around the tavern room* Archibald De Breenie: She just looked drunk is all Monah Bonesetter: I'm sure that was all. Archibald De Breenie: *annoyed look at Monah* Did you find his mother anyway in this god-forsaken place* Monah Bonesetter: I don't see her. Andrex: *a love struck stare and a greedy tongue* Andrex: RARF! Archibald De Breenie: Dog....Heel! *his best authoritative voice* Monah Bonesetter: Have you got a ham steak in your pocket? Andrex: *taking his voice as a cue, Andrex charges towards the man* Archibald De Breenie: No *hands up to defend himself against the onslaught* I said...heel, damnit...you curr...heel! Andrex: *mounts his leg* Archibald De Breenie: then let's go then before I'm still mostly dry Monah Bonesetter: Yes. Back to meet the ship. Andrex: *taking a break from the exersion, Andrex sniffs around de Breenie's bottom* Andrex: *poke poke, prod* Monah Bonesetter: It's chasing you, run! Archibald De Breenie: *grumbles* Do I have a ham steak in my pockets??!?! Now really.....*shakes his head* Archibald De Breenie: stupid dog...I'm not going to run from a mutt Andrex: *wimpers as the man departs*
After a dashing retreat out of doors, Mr. De Breenie and Ms. Bonesetter convene on the dock.
Archibald De Breenie: *huffs* Monah Bonesetter: Sorry you did not get a look at her. Archibald De Breenie: Well since we have time, tell me then. Say I had been running around this part of town. What would I have heard?
Seamus Lund, a sailor called “Frog“ by the Coralyn crew, comes ambling down the dock in search of our heroes. With them in sight he glances them over quickly.
Monah Bonesetter: I think we ran out of time. Seamus “Frog“ Lund: Hello, thereah! Archibald De Breenie: Hmmm...... Monah Bonesetter: Hello sir. Archibald De Breenie: Good eve. *briskly* Seamus “Frog“ Lund: Not the crowd we was hopin fers Seamus “Frog“ Lund: Just the two a ya! Archibald De Breenie: You have a de Breenie amongst you. Numbers matter less. Monah Bonesetter: We're one more. An older human man is coming from the shops. Seamus “Frog“ Lund: *taps foot* Novus Aristi Healer: *pivots on a heel to peek over the Frog's shoulder. Spying the robed man, he comments* My gods man.... you're robes look a... uh... a fright. *blinking blankly* Seamus “Frog“ Lund: *looks at the water* Archibald De Breenie: *sighs* Yes, he'll be another hour or two, mostl likely, if he's not asleep already....*looks at the Aristi, blankly, then down at himself, eyes widening* Oh dear gods! Novus Aristi Healer: *shakes his head and moves along, deciding it better not to hear the details* Archibald De Breenie: *mutters* @#$@#@#$@#$@# dog.... Barret Victor: What's going on Breenie? Seamus “Frog“ Lund: Ah. the old guy you spoke of? Archibald De Breenie: *shakes head* Nothing, dear Barret. Nothing at all. Monah Bonesetter: *half to herself* The people upstairs pay good coin for that kind of attention. Seamus “Frog“ Lund: *taps foot* Archibald De Breenie: *eyes her dubiously* Seamus “Frog“ Lund: We dunt ave all dey. Barret Victor: Where is Corbin? Archibald De Breenie: We're ready. Seamus “Frog“ Lund: Aboard. Mah names Shaymus, but ye kin call me Frog Monah Bonesetter: *smiles delightedly* Archibald De Breenie: *a slight grunting sound, a half-nod* Barret Victor: Alright Barret Victor: Well, let's go then Seamus “Frog“ Lund: Come on then! Seamus “Frog“ Lund: *hops into a skiff and invites you into the tiny craft* Barret Victor: *Steps in carefully* Archibald De Breenie: Ahhh...the Coralyn...*takes a careful step, teetering for a moment, then sorta falls in the skiff* Monah Bonesetter: *climbs in last and quite gracelessly*
The three are rowed by the able “Frog“ to THE CORALYN and board.
Monah Bonesetter: *stands close to the mainmast* Archibald De Breenie: *takes deep breaths, a hand on the railing, occasionally eyeing the horizon, but mostly fixed on the deck* Barret Victor: *Keeps an eye out warily, while putting on his armor* Alaric: Excellent! *a booming voice* Monah Bonesetter: *frowns* Are you certain about that decision Barret? Barret Victor: Quite Barret Victor: I can't swim anyways Alaric: Welcome aboard! Monah Bonesetter: *resists a smile as she turns towards Alaric* Archibald De Breenie: *looks up slowly at Alaric, blinking* yes...th---thank you Seamus “Frog“ Lund: *hustles about* Alaric: Please enjoy these fine victuals. *gestures to the table* Alaric: I am Alaric, pilot of the Coralyn. Monah Bonesetter: *reaches for a boiled egg* Barret Victor: *Nods slightly, not moving towards the food* Archibald De Breenie: *looks at the boiled eggs, turning slightly pale* Monah Bonesetter: *chips away the shells after rolling the egg on the tabletop* Alaric: We are heading north to Shipwreck Island. Archibald De Breenie: fanastic...*dryly* Barret Victor: Let us hopefully disproove the name Archibald De Breenie: I mean *mumbles to self* where else would you want to go in a ship....? Alaric: *laughs heartily* Monah Bonesetter: *looks at Archibald and bites the egg in half* Alaric: Please, eat. We have a fine Sea Bass caught just off Mystique today. Archibald De Breenie: *face stiffens, a loud gulp* Barret Victor: I appreciate the offer, but I'll pass Alaric: *shrugs* As you wish. Monah Bonesetter: *drops a few more eggs into a square of cloth and wraps them up for later* Archibald De Breenie: And why *quietly* are we headed --there? Monah Bonesetter: *as she concludes that nobody else is eating...* I'll take this. They'll want it later. Barret Victor: Because that's where he told us we were going Archibald De Breenie: Thanks Barret *icily* Alaric: Faster there! Alaric: *sets a pace on the drum* Barret Victor: Tell me... Monah Bonesetter: Some seawater would be perfect on these eggs I think. I wonder what seawater tastes like. Barret Victor: Are we being rowed to where we are going? Archibald De Breenie: *tries to stop something from coming up* Archibald De Breenie: sea.....water....*green* Alaric: Well... Alaric: no, but negotiating out of the port is a tricky business. Barret Victor: Tell me. What is rowing us? Barret Victor: Are they free men, or slaves? Alaric: Free men ofcourse. Alaric: *laughs* Barret Victor: Then you will have no objection to myself going below to investigate? Alaric: We are men of the Greater Good. *gives barrett a pointed look* Barret Victor: Then you will have nothing to hide Alaric: I am sorry. The ... Captain is busy. Archibald De Breenie: *breathes deeply* like riding a horse...just....different....and more.....watery.... Barret Victor: I see
Barret looks through the grating. THE CORALYN seems to be traveling light. Only a few crates and sacks are visible. A low voice is heard out of sight the words indistinct, obscured.
Archibald De Breenie: *a weak snort/laugh* Barret Victor: At least I don't see any chains or starving people, so that is certainly a good sign Archibald De Breenie: perhaps if you spent more time in Upper Port, dear..... Alaric: Of course. Archibald De Breenie: I believe.....believe...he means the Aristi.....or at the very l..least....the Alliance
Meanwhile on THE NORTHERN HIGHWAY, Jarook, a orclun of M'gok Tukar, emerges from the Four Winds belatedly looking for his friends.
Jusin the Oxen-Driver: *looks back at his Ox, not wanting to wander to far from it* Jusin the Oxen-Driver: Oi. Lad. Jarook: *snort* Hellos, dwarf! Jusin the Oxen-Driver: *looking over the Orclun* Jarook: You see sleeping paladin, yus? He always sleep here. Jusin the Oxen-Driver: Ehh... ugly, big, not so bright... *barely above whisper* Jusin the Oxen-Driver: Ye must be tha one. Jusin the Oxen-Driver: Hop in the cart lad. Jarook: Okay!
Once Jusin and Jarook arrive in PORT ROYALE, Jarook sees the Coralyn heading out to sea and desperately runs after.
Jusin the Oxen-Driver: There was a fella, loo- *watches him run off* Jarook: *stampedes on* Jusin the Oxen-Driver: 'Ee's waiting fer ye on tha docks.
The intrepid Jarook boards whatever unmanned craft he can find, little more than a tea pot to his orclun bulk, and paddles like mad after the Coralyn which by now is nearly clear of the harbor. And so we, with Jarook in tow, return to our heroes aboard THE CORALYN.
Jarook: I catch up! Alaric: Ahoy! Barret Victor: Glad to have you, Jarook Jarook: Hoy? Alaric: *sets a rope for the straggler on a kayak* Alaric: *pulls Jarook aboard* Jarook: *climbs on* Where Korbin? Alaric: I am Pilot Alaric. You must be Jarook. The captain told me you would be out here. Monah Bonesetter: There's our friend Jarook. Look Archibald, its Jarook. Jarook: Hello, The Brie! Alaric: I had no idea you were so skilled with water craft. Archibald De Breenie: Great, wonderful *hands waving absently* Jarook, wonderful, really *shaking head, looking down the whole time* Barret Victor: I'm willing to bet he didn't either Alaric: Perhaps you can help us on our way? Jarook: Sail in M'Gok Tukar. Paddle with hands! Alaric: *laughs* Alaric: Now that we are all here. *shouts into the sails* Alaric: Set to lads! Archibald De Breenie: We're going to go faster!?!?!
The sails are stretched full and THE CORALYN lurches out to sea.
Archibald De Breenie: Ohhhhh.........I had to ask' Jarook: We meet Korbin on other end? Alaric: Corbin is below. He will not be joining us. You cannot use an unidentified item. Jarook: Ohs. Too bad, Korbin great with goblins! Monah Bonesetter: There is food, Jarook. Alaric: Please. *gestures to the table* Enjoy our fine sea bass! Jarook: *makes face* Fish? Alaric: *smiles* Caught off Mystique today. Very fresh and specially prepared! Jarook: *digs into a cavity in one of his skulls mouth and pulls out a scorched half-snake* From Medusa. Still got six more! Archibald De Breenie: *rises slowly, holding on to the railing* So....we have a map or some idea where we're going on this island. Jarook: *crunch*
Time passes and the wind is strong, steady, and true. Our heroes pass beyond the sandy shoals of paradise that surround Port Royale and into open sea.
Jarook: We go far. Archibald De Breenie: There....getting my sea legs.....*stretching* Monah Bonesetter: *gets low against the deck as though trying to hold on to it* Barret Victor: *Seems fairly comfortable* Monah Bonesetter: *her turn to look uncomfortable* Archibald De Breenie: it's those eggs....*nods* Jarook: *chomps another medusa-snake* Archibald De Breenie: *watches Jarook for a minute, then turns and runs to the rail, vomiting into the sea*
The sea is surprisingly peaceful, the motion regular, but without a point of reference THE CORALYN seems to bob in place on the waves.
Jarook: Paladin want? Good for stomach. Stone stomach! Barret Victor: I thought you said you were getting your sea legs? Monah Bonesetter: *watches Archibald attention undivided* Jarook: *offers a snake* Barret Victor: I'll pass, though thank you, Jarook Jarook: Dwarfie? Monah Bonesetter: I have eaten. *eyes linger on his collected skulls* Jarook: *shrugs* More for Jarook *chomp*
Out of the empty blue vastness a shadow in the sky is spotted on the horizon ... hovering, and beneath it black rocks rake through frothy surf.
Barret Victor: Is that an island, or a monster? Barret Victor: *Starts strapping on his shield* Monah Bonesetter: Where? Jarook: Storm, maybe? Archibald De Breenie: Gods, let it be an island... Jarook: Cornelius' tail itches. Must be storm. Archibald De Breenie: *a string of expletives under his breath* Monah Bonesetter: How does this ship get along with rocks? Monah Bonesetter: How do you stop this thing, anyway? Barret Victor: Ma'am, this ship is meant for a one way trip, if I had to take a guess Alaric: *shouts to the men* Heave to there! *pointing* The line! The line* Archibald De Breenie: *jerks head quickly to Barret, eyes narrowing* Monah Bonesetter: *moves to the point on the ship farthest from the rocks and such*
The ship slows and SHIPWRECK ISLAND looms into view.
Archibald De Breenie: Al...Alaric....what do we know about this island we're going to? Monah Bonesetter: *sits* Jarook: It dark. Alaric: It is the site of many shipwrecks Alaric: Anchor! Barret Victor: Yes, but what is actually ON the island? Archibald De Breenie: But....but the island itself? *looks at Alaric, then Frog* Jarook: Foes to test Jarook! Barret Victor: Beyond the hulls of boats Jarook: *pulls out his axe enthusiastically*
The sails are gathered up by the crew. Monahdoes her best to keep out of the way. There is a groaning from the anchor's cord. The ship lists then protests as it lurches to a stop. The shore of the island is perhaps 100 yards away. A time and weather worn dock is in view.
Jarook: Jarook once read story of ship called Titanic. Kill author for bad writing! Alaric: Frog! Alaric: Ready the skiff! Barret Victor: Titanic? Sounds large Alaric: *he turns back to you* Jarook: Maybe. Jarook not really pay attention! Archibald De Breenie: So no maps of this island, hmmm? Alaric: THere is a grotto on the otherside of the island, an old pirate lair Jarook: Books keep words, but not keep meaning. Alaric: We believe the wreck you seek is in there. Barret Victor: Alright Alaric: Frog will take you ashore. Points to the skiff behind De Breenie* Archibald De Breenie: You know my uncle Alistair was a cartographer....a --royal-- cartographer actually....for the Queen....*brightens* Barret Victor: Put a sock in it Breenie Monah Bonesetter: Will we all fit in that skiff? Maybe two trips are in order. Archibald De Breenie: *hurt look* Well I was just -saying--... Frog skillfully guides a skiff through the crashing surf to the weathered dock. Our intrepid heroes disembark ashore SHIPWRECK ISLAND.
Archibald De Breenie: VV_SPELLCAST_100 (0) Light Archibald De Breenie: anybody wish to scout? Barret Victor: I think we should just stick as a group Archibald De Breenie: *kneels down briefly to feel the dry land* Jarook: Yus. Sticks hard to break as group. Archibald De Breenie: RRriiiigghhhttt... Archibald De Breenie: Hold up, chaps Jarook: *sniffs* Archibald De Breenie: Let's wait for our dwarven lady, hmm? Jarook: Yus, the Rune Caster!
In scouting those shores, skirting cliffs, avoiding twisted black trees, our heroes stumble into an inhabitant of the island, a blue skinned ogre armed with a spear, at his throat livid purple gills pulse like underwater coral. Battle is joined.
Archibald De Breenie: what was --that--? Archibald De Breenie: VV_SPELLCAST_102 (1) Mage Armor Monah Bonesetter: Some sort of ogre? Jarook: Jarook not know. Look like ogre. Archibald De Breenie: VV_SPELLCAST_174 (1) Summon Creature I Jarook: Mores. Monah Bonesetter: More of them? Barret Victor: Come on Jarook Barret Victor: They're going to be coming this way Barret Victor: Best be ready for them Archibald De Breenie: *gulps* Monah Bonesetter: VV_SPELLCAST_102 (1) Mage Armor Jarook: *devilish grin*
Our heroes rush two more of the island's blue inhabitants and fell them.
Archibald De Breenie: ha-ha! Barret Victor: That was straight forward Archibald De Breenie: Jarook? Jarook: *opens the mouth of a skull and pours powder on himself* Monah Bonesetter: Those things have overrun this island. As the four adventurers distractedly examine the opening of the cavernous grotto, four more blue ogres surge from the sea, foam dripping from their three tonged spears.
Barret Victor: Behind you Archibald De Breenie: behind! Jarook: Uh oh! Monah Bonesetter: Behind!
The battle is fierce, our heroes wounded, but victorious. Their blue enemies slip once more beneath the waves trailing purple blood.
Barret Victor: Are the both of you alright? Archibald De Breenie: *breathing deeply* Jarook: Will be fine! Archibald De Breenie: dear...dear.....*pale* Barret Victor: Come, let us see about this cave Archibald De Breenie: You...you were mighty brave, lady dwarf, to risk your life for a De Breenie like that Monah Bonesetter: *nods after packing her wounds* Archibald De Breenie: It shall not be forgotten!
After tending to their wounds, the four advance along a stone walk through the cavernous mouth of a grotto. Inside they hear the lapping of waves, and a distant singing, melodious, hauntingly beautiful... but sinister or sweet?
Jarook: *sniffs* Jarook: Moisty! Barret Victor: Hence the name Barret Victor: Careful Barret Victor: Something up on the right Jarook: *growl* Archibald De Breenie: what? *loudly* Jarook: Smell witch! Barret Victor: I have no idea what Archibald De Breenie: Witch...really? Jarook: VV_SPELLCAST_50 (1) Endure Elements Barret Victor: Jarook says it's a witch

Barret Victor: *Nods* I think you're right Archibald De Breenie: *nods* Hopefuly we can deal with her later...or not at all Jarook: *sniffs* Archibald De Breenie: are they locked? Barret Victor: We don't know Archibald De Breenie: well for gods sakes Barret Victor: Have a look if you want
Jarook hears the sounds of witches haranging their ogre pets.
Sea Hag: Hmmm! Sea Hag: Most irregular my sisters! Sea Hag: Toil!
Monah Bonesetter: What Corbin seeks could be here. Barret Victor: Possibly Archibald De Breenie: Yes. And I don't see a trap Barret Victor: Look if you think you should Archibald De Breenie: A de Breenie does not back away from uncertainty...or something Jarook: Crone! Jarook: They wait for us like lions. Jarook: Soon, they attack. Archibald De Breenie: Hmm...then let's hurry Barret Victor: That's what we're here for Jarook Barret Victor: Grab and go then Monah Bonesetter: Oh my. Jarook investigates around a corner and discovers a gaggle of sea hags with many blue brutes to protect them.
Jarook: There is pack! Jarook: Many witches! Many ogres! Archibald De Breenie: Curses Barret Victor: Always a useful commodity Monah Bonesetter: Wait. Jarook: Rune Caster throw ball of fire? Monah Bonesetter: I can soften them up some. I will wager they don't like fire. Archibald De Breenie: I'll wager they don't Barret Victor: I'll wager they don't like /us/ Archibald De Breenie: Actually, Monah, I ahve a scroll that may be helpful Archibald De Breenie: You're a mage, yes? Jarook: What we do, we do now. Monah Bonesetter: Hold it for now Archibald. Barret Victor: We wait for the lass to open fire Archibald De Breenie: very well
Sea Hag: It can not be bourne! Sea Hag: Get in there ye cowards! Sea Hag: *cackles*
Battle is joined, and rages in the slimey cave. Monah scorches them with fire. Barret and Jarook lay about them with their weapons, but their enemies are thick. Jarook is knocked to the floor by a vicious blow, and passes out. Monah is tossed aside. De Breenie in an effort of misguided courage distracts the blue ogre only to receive the same treatment, but it is enough as Monah Bonesetter at last fells it with a bolt of acid. Barret defeats his final enemy as well.
Archibald De Breenie: dear gods.... Barret Victor: I think I can help Barret Victor: *Takes his gauntlet off his hands and places them on Jarook's head and heart* Monah Bonesetter: *sets about mending herself* Archibald De Breenie: *blinks at Barret, mouth agape*
Barret's hands restore Jarook to consciousness.
Jarook: *rumbles* Barret Victor: Jarook, you took a nasty blow to the head Barret Victor: You should look into wearing a helmet Jarook: Jarook feel! They pay with life? Jarook: *looks at the corpses* Barret Victor: Oh yes, they paid
The corpses of the hags slowly dissolve into sea water. Jarook grabs the head of a hag in one hand and her neck with the other, but she flows away before his eyes.
Jarook: *snort* Barret Victor: Lass, would you mind mending his skull a bit better than I? Barret Victor: I am afraid I can only do so much Archibald De Breenie: I have a bandage Monah Bonesetter: Here Jarook. Lower that head to my reach. Archibald De Breenie: if it will help Jarook: Huh? Okay. Jarook: *lowers his head for the dwarf* Monah Bonesetter: *inspects the wound pulling up a flap of his scalp with her fingertips* Archibald De Breenie: *grimaces* Monah Bonesetter: *blood washes down from the wound* Monah Bonesetter: *chews on a mouthful of eggshells until they are pastey and then smears them into the cut* Archibald De Breenie: *positively frowns* Jarook: Thank yous. Barret Victor: Come, let us press on Archibald De Breenie: VV_SPELLCAST_456 (1) Expeditious Retreat Jarook: There, this is magic. Water. Evil.

Barret Victor: Careful Barret Victor: Breenie Archibald De Breenie: Let's avoid them Monah Bonesetter: Sisters. Archibald De Breenie: what? Archibald De Breenie: why don't we just go? Barret Victor: Go where? Jarook: Not avoid. Kill. Kill or be killed. Archibald De Breenie: very well Archibald De Breenie: I''ll fire away....ready? Barret Victor: Aye Monah Bonesetter: Don't they look like sisters? If we kill one, the other will be overcome with grief. Archibald De Breenie attacks Sea Hag : *miss* : (1 - 3 = -2) Archibald De Breenie: *clears throat, missing* Jarook: You miss. What they do? Archibald De Breenie: Thanks, Jarook
The two sea hags turn from their conversation, and cast a curse upon our heroes. Nevertheless the battle is short, and they too flow back into the sea, dead.
Archibald De Breenie: Not sure...but something..uhh....*kneels to the ground* Barret Victor: Are you alright, Breenie? Monah Bonesetter: *slowly turns towards Archibald* Archibald De Breenie: can barely...soo tired......*sweating heavily * Jarook: Jarook's flesh like water. Sap his strength! Archibald De Breenie: I feel so tired.....like...like....Barret Barret Victor: Can't be too tired if you still have a sarcrastic tongue in ya Barret Victor: I'm afraid I can't do anything for simple exhaustion Archibald De Breenie: *still kneeling, shaking his head* Can't walk....without...help Barret Victor: It sounds as if he needs a restoration of some sort Archibald De Breenie: *head up, eyes raging* It's not simple...ex....ex.....*head down* Barret Victor: Any chance you have a scroll of it, lass? Jarook: *nods* Jarook: *pours the liquid into his mouth* Monah Bonesetter: I have food, if you need to eat. Jarook: *stretches* Muscles not water anymore. Jarook: Rest later. We keep going? Barret Victor: *Nods*
Following the haunting melody of a woman's voice, the four adventurers find a sirine singing to the sea. She is surrounded by the bleached timbers of many ships.
Barret Victor: Hello? Jarook: This not crone.... Archibald De Breenie: another hag? Monah Bonesetter: Careful. Monah Bonesetter: *flat expression towards the woman* Jarook: Still smell magic. Sirine: *sings a beautiful and enchanting song but she seems distant.* Barret Victor: Aye Barret Victor: Lass, can you hear me? Archibald De Breenie: *levels his crossbow at her* Jarook: This not crone song, this nymph song! Barret Victor: It's certainly better song than your song! Jarook: Jarook don't sing. Sirine: *smiles out of the corner of her eye but goes on singing out to sea* Archibald De Breenie: Do....do you know Captain Corbin? Barret Victor: Well, at least she's alert to us Jarook: She sing to sea. Sea nymph. Barret Victor: Lass, I'm Barret Victor Jarook: Jarook not think she talk to us. Only sea she care for. Barret Victor: To my left, Jarook, behind me, Archibald and Monah Sirine: *turns to Barret* Archibald De Breenie: so is she the ones who causes shipwrecks? *suspiciously* Barret Victor: It's only polite to introduce ourselves Sirine: *her eyes are deep and full of longing* Jarook: *snorts* Sirine: *she sings* Barret Barret Victor: Aye? Barret Victor: *Sheathes his sword* Monah Bonesetter: *snaps down the faceplate on her helmet* Sirine: Come to me. Archibald De Breenie: *watches Monah oddly* Barret Victor: *Takes a few tenative steps forward* Sirine: *sings to him*
The song takes a hold of Barret sapping his strength.
Jarook: *squints* Archibald De Breenie: Err....Barret....you know,,,I had a cousin....Gregory.....got lost in the woods.....said he heard a...a ...dryad...or something...charmed him or...something...eh...you know...he was a woodcutter by trade of course... Archibald De Breenie: Actually he built houses for many of the nobles now...... Jarook: The Brie be quiet, or he attract more crones. Archibald De Breenie: eh...why not ? *looking at Monah* Barret Victor: *Seems to get a vacant look about him* Sirine: *hums to him* Archibald De Breenie: What do you mean, he's lost? Monah Bonesetter: I don't know Jarook. Archibald De Breenie: Hey now wait a minute, miss sea sprite or whatever. Barret may be a jerk, but he's --our-- jerk! *stepping forward* Sirine: *croons* Barret! Barret Victor: Yes? Sirine: You must stay with me. Archibald De Breenie: *shakes Barret* snap out of it....There's evil afoot.... Jarook: *pats his axe* Barret Victor: Staying sounds nice... I am awfully tired... do you have a bed? Archibald De Breenie: Now, wait a minute. He's my footservant....er...sorta...he stays with me *glares at her, wagging a finger* Sirine: Yes. You have travelled far. Your bones need rest. Jarook: *nods* Barret Victor: Yes, and I feel so weak all of a sudden Sirine: *beckons to him* Barret Victor: A rest would be good... Archibald De Breenie: No, you only rest at the Four Winds, remember? *shaking him frantically* You have your own couch!!! Sirine: *guides him back* Barret Victor: My couch... right... where is my couch? Jarook: You use magic on sleepy paladin. If you not cease, Jarook saparate head from your body. Archibald De Breenie: It's back this way Archibald De Breenie: Come on, Barret! *grabs his shoulders, trying to turn him back* Sirine: *gestures to the sea* A bed... *a bed of kelp waves in the water* Jarook: *pats his axe* Jarook: *frowns* Not listen. Barret Victor: Waves... I can't swim though... Barret Victor: Couch... I don't need to swim in a couch... Jarook: *looks at Monah for guidance*
The sirine further snares him with her magic and her charms....
Barret Victor: Then again... Archibald De Breenie: Yep...sorry...he's a landlubber through and through...He'll have to stay with us Jarook attacks Sirine : *miss* : (5 + 6 = 11) Sirine : Initiative Roll : 12 : (8 + 4 = 12) Sirine: *sings* Barret Victor: Don't hurt her Jarook attacks Sirine : *hit* : (8 + 6 = 14) Jarook damages Sirine: 10 (10 Physical) Sirine: Stop him! Archibald De Breenie attacks Sirine : *miss* : (10 - 3 = 7) Jarook attacks Sirine : *hit* : (14 + 6 = 20) Jarook damages Sirine: 13 (13 Physical) Jarook killed Sirine Jarook: RAARGH! Barret Victor: You... killed her... Jarook: *hefts his axe*
The sirine flows into the sea a final song calling to Barret...
Archibald De Breenie: brawns over beauty.... Barret Victor: *Stares out to sea* Jarook: *grabs a skull* Jarook: *knocks Barret on the head with it* Archibald De Breenie: Hey, Barret...come on now....snap out of it *snaps fingers* Barret Victor: *Sighs forlornly* Jarook: *looks at the two coins she left behind and shuffles them into the sea* Barret Victor: I feel so very tired all of a sudden Archibald De Breenie: Well that's hardly a surprise Monah Bonesetter: *looks around under the shipwreck* Jarook: What we look for? Monah Bonesetter: For curiosity Jarook. Monah Bonesetter: Hello.
She finds a collection of human skulls.
Archibald De Breenie: We need you, though....to get back....you're our leader, remember? Barret Victor: What is the point of leading when you cannot even get what you want? Barret Victor: It's all a joke anyways, you'll all end up dead one way or another. Adventurers always do Jarook: He be charmed. Jarook can fix, if he rest. Monah Bonesetter: *bends removing her helmet to get a better look at something* Archibald De Breenie: But....uh...but....see....*scratces head* well actually that's a good question....*snaps fingers* Wait, I know! Jarook: *looks at Monah* Archibald De Breenie: We'll never get what we want without our leader, and your ours...sorta.... Archibald De Breenie: Remember how many fortunes you've won and lost already....? I mean, you've never died Monah Bonesetter: *holds a human skull in each hand* Monah Bonesetter: Her victims. Jarook: Is good we kill, then, or Barret would be there too! Monah Bonesetter: Hear that Barret? This would have been you. Barret Victor: And will be, at some point or another Barret Victor: Does it matter if it's sooner rather than later? Jarook: Yus! But we die with shame, or die with honour! Archibald De Breenie: We're all going to die, of course. But that doesn't mean we let it come to us. No, no, good sir. That is hardly the de Breenie spirit Monah Bonesetter: *holds one skull at Jarook's elbow, offering it to him* Do you want it. Jarook: *shakes head* Only take skulls of important. Jarook: This... weak human eaten by weak hag. Jarook: Not worthy. Not magic. Jarook: *ponders* Jarook: But good story... Jarook take. Jarook: *holds his hand out for one of the skulls* Monah Bonesetter: *smiles and soft-pitches it to the half-orc* Monah Bonesetter: *smiles and soft-pitches it to the half-orc* Jarook: This skull... charmed by sea nymph... weak, but important lesson. Maybe Jarook use it to charm too. Barret Victor: *Yawns* So tired... and I can only barely carry my own equipment. I didn't even notice before Monah Bonesetter: *bends and arranges the remaining skulls so that the are lined up looking out towards the water* Jarook: *nods and sets the skull in his pack, unprocessed to be hooked into his collection* Archibald De Breenie: Jarook! Can you carry Barret's equipment? Jarook: Huh? Okays. Archibald De Breenie: You are strong. and he is ....tired Barret Victor: But then how will I defend myself? Jarook: Maybe Jarook make him sleep? Archibald De Breenie: *throws hands up in the air* Gods, Barret, what is wrong with you!!?!? Jarook: He under spell! Barret Victor: *Sighs* Unfortunately, as always with life, it does have a nasty tendency to go on. I will miss that siren Archibald De Breenie: *rolls eyes* Yes, I 'm beginning to regret we saved you.... Barret Victor: And I already regret I was saved Archibald De Breenie: Great...so lead on... Jarook: Yus. Archibald De Breenie: though I could stand to rest soon and concentrate.... Jarook: Suffer with honour is better than die in shame. Barret Victor: Rest might not be a bad idea Jarook: Not here. Barret Victor: I suspect I might have been cursed Archibald De Breenie: agreed Jarook: Hags turn into water... water may turn into hags. Archibald De Breenie: I already knew that Jarook: What this door? Barret Victor: It's a door, apparently Barret Victor: Let us go through it Archibald De Breenie: Do we really have to--? Archibald De Breenie: *sighs* Archibald De Breenie: First good news we've had....
The door opens into a tunnel descending into dark water.
Barret Victor: Well Monah Bonesetter: Careful Barret. Your armor. Jarook: Jarook not swim in hag-cursed water. Archibald De Breenie: like I said, good news...let's go back Jarook: We find what we look for? Barret Victor: I don't know Monah Bonesetter: We may have. Jarook: What we look for? Archibald De Breenie: I think so Barret Victor: We don't even know what we were looking for Archibald De Breenie: I found some belongings...... Jarook: Korbin not tell? Archibald De Breenie: Not exactly Monah Bonesetter: He did not.
They emerge to the open air of SHIPWRECK ISLAND.
Jarook: *sniffs* Archibald De Breenie: bah Archibald De Breenie: Personally, i think that water sprite is responsible for all the shipwrecks Jarook: Is possible. Monah Bonesetter: Then Jarook did the right thing. Archibald De Breenie: *breathes a sigh of relief as he sees the skiff* Barret Victor: Come, let us board and return to Port Barret Victor: I want my couch Jarook: Yus. Archibald De Breenie: *sighs* another......boat....ride.... Archibald De Breenie: damnit, Barret, i knew you're tired, but please move Archibald De Breenie: *harrumphs*
Frog holds the skiff steady as they board and rows them back to THE CORALYN. As Barret leaves SHIPWRECK ISLAND behind his strength returns, but the longing in his heart for the sirine remains.
Thus ends Part the First.

SUNKEN TREASURE PART the Second
Frog brings our heroes safely back aboard THE CORALYN. Alaric has once again laid out a meal of sea bass and boiled eggs.
Archibald De Breenie: *eyes the sea bass, suddenly ravenous* Jarook: *pulls the last two snakes and chomps them* Alaric: Please. Alaric: Eat. Jarook: *crunch* Archibald De Breenie: *turns his back to Jarook* Alaric: And then I would like to see your booty. Barret Victor: *Looks around* Archibald De Breenie: *Settles on a comfy cushion with the de Breenie insignia* Archibald De Breenie: So, what is it exactly that Captain Corbin was looking for? Monah Bonesetter: *lines up a few items including four strange-looking and smelly helmets* Alaric: Hmmm.... Monah Bonesetter: Barret, look at this. Archibald De Breenie: *turns and looks at Monah, curious* Jarook: *looks at the old assortion of items* Jarook: *wrinkles an eyebrow* Alaric: *shakes head* Alaric: These are interesting artifacts but.... Monah Bonesetter: *shows Archibald the corner of a rolled paper*
Monah has inspected the old map discerning a sketch with some text adjacent describing a strange necromantic artifact, and its location at sea where it was sunk in a sealed black crate....
Archibald De Breenie: *eyes widen, though he quickly resumes a normal gaze* Interesting...*a short nod to her* Alaric: The item is supposed to glow. Alaric: Is this all that was found? Jarook: *just stands there* Barret Victor: We took everything from the island that wasn't bolted down Archibald De Breenie: Glow....? I think.....hmm...perhaps...*going through this things* Monah Bonesetter: The item is supposed to glow, you say? Archibald De Breenie: The Captain seeks this? *holds out a small stone* Jarook: *looks curiously* Alaric: *looks at the stone* Alaric: Most disappointing.... Archibald De Breenie: disappointing? Barret Victor: Your disappointment is disappointing Monah Bonesetter: You don't see what you are looking for? Alaric: Please. Let me see everything you found.
Our noble heroes are still notably laden with booty.
Archibald De Breenie: *shrugs* Very well...Most of it is simple clothes Archibald De Breenie: There are several scrolls....a common leather belt...leather gloves Jarook: *takes one of the fish helmets and tries to eat it* Jarook: Ptui! Jarook: *throws the helm back into place* Monah Bonesetter: A pair of leather boots, we left behind. Monah Bonesetter: Oh, and this. Alaric: *stooping over the things looks up to monah* Archibald De Breenie: *Watches him carefully* Alaric: Yes? Monah Bonesetter: *pulls a rolled paper from under her cloak and displays it* Archibald De Breenie: *Frowns as she displays it* Monah Bonesetter: *still held rolled in her hand* Archibald De Breenie: hardly glowing *mutters* Alaric: *inspects it carefuly* This ... Jarook: Is map. Monah Bonesetter: Surely this is not what Captain Corbin is looking for? Alaric: *his eyes brighten* May I take this a moment? Monah Bonesetter: *nods and passes it to him* Alaric: Thank you. Archibald De Breenie: *a quick shake of his head, directed to Monah, then sighs* Alaric: I'll be below just a moment. Alaric: Excuse me Alaric: *makes his way to a locked door behind de breenie* Monah Bonesetter: *returns Archibald's impatient look*
Alaric steps through the door and locks it behind him.
Monah Bonesetter: Do you have a boat, De Breenie? Archibald De Breenie: Well, good then...I happened to like this little stone *shrugs at Monah* Archibald De Breenie: *turns and shakes his head at her* Archibald De Breenie: [Whisper] you got a good look, no? Barret Victor: *Yawns and stretches* I wonder how much further. Monah Bonesetter: [Whisper] I did. Monah Bonesetter: *tries on one of the anchovie-smelling helmets* Barret Victor: *Keeps his gaze steadily out to sea* Archibald De Breenie: Anyone else think this whole thing is a little....odd?
Alaric returns with excitement on his face.
Alaric: *relocks the door* Alaric: You have done well! Monah Bonesetter: What is odd Archibald? Archibald De Breenie: Nothing, dear....nothing at all...*looks up at Alaric* Have we? Alaric: Corbin will keep the map. Alaric: And he has... one last request. Monah Bonesetter: *removes the helm and looks at Alaric* Archibald De Breenie: request? Alaric: *nods* Jarook: Speaks. Monah Bonesetter: yes Barret Victor: Spit it out already Alaric: *sighs* Archibald De Breenie: *arches a brow at Barret but says nothing* Alaric: If you would, help us retrieve the ... Alaric: item on the map, we will further reward you. Barret Victor: /Further/ reward us? Barret Victor: What reward have we gotten so far? Archibald De Breenie: a leather belt, Barret *Dryly* Alaric: *smiles somewhat nervously as if he does not want to make this request* Monah Bonesetter: *smiles* The captain can count on us for assistance. Barret Victor: When you say us, you mean you Archibald De Breenie: *frowns* Well, actually --maybe-- he can Jarook: Yus, Jarook will help Korbin. Archibald De Breenie: Hold a moment, good fellows.. Alaric: *clears throat* Barret Victor: Frankly, this "item" we could be retrieving could be a lich for all we know Jarook: Leech? Archibald De Breenie: I'm happy to do a good deed and be kept in the dark --once.....but.... Alaric: *smiles* Alaric: If you would.... *gestures toward the four fish head helmets* Archibald De Breenie: a de Breenie has honor, and it will not besmirch centures of tradition. Jarook: Slimey hats? Archibald De Breenie: those? *makes a face* Jarook: *takes one* Jarook: *sniffs* Alaric: Ahem... Alaric: yes. Archibald De Breenie: *get his items* Alaric: The final item lies underwater. Monah Bonesetter: *smiles at Archibald holding one of the helmets in her hands* Alaric: It was placed there by Jarlus the Red. Barret Victor: Oh joy Archibald De Breenie: ahhh, yes....Jariud the Red *nods sagely* Jarook: Sound important. Where his skull? Archibald De Breenie: I remember him well..... Alaric: And these helms... are your means to get to it. Alaric: The map was found with them, yes? Jarook: *sniffs the helm* Monah Bonesetter: It was. Jarook: Jarook sees! Alaric: *nods* Jarook: This helm turn us to fish! Archibald De Breenie: Good, good, wear a slimey helm, go underwater, and...eh....find what exactly? Alaric: A black crate. Jarook: *nods* Archibald De Breenie: Of course, my dear *smiling evenly at her* but --what-- exactly is it? Alaric: *grins nervously* Alaric: Good. Alaric: Heave to, lads! Alaric: *shouts to the sailors* Barret Victor: You didn't answer the question Jarook: Much secrets.... Barret Victor: What is IN the crate? Archibald De Breenie: *a hand on the railing, looking out to the sea, muttering to himself* Alaric: The crate has the item Corbin is looking for. Alaric: *grins nervously again* Barret Victor: No bloody duh it does Barret Victor: What is the item? Alaric: I uh... Alaric: don't know exactly. Alaric: *looks down ashamed* Jarook: Korbin keep secrets... Monah Bonesetter: Does anyone know how to use this pitchfork? Archibald De Breenie: [Whisper] Don't let her search the crate first....remember, they talked together for a while at the inn, all by themselves Monah Bonesetter: And... who hasn't taken a helmet?
THE CORALYN slowly makes it way south east and comes to a halt over a sunken lagoon. SHIPWRECK ISLAND lurks on the horizon.
Barret Victor: Right Barret Victor: Alright, let's get us there Archibald De Breenie: *clears throat, pausing in his muttering* I haven't Archibald De Breenie: *a pointed look at Barret* Jarook: Giant fork... what use for? Monah Bonesetter: *smiles* Torturing things. Alaric: *sets a rope over the side* Jarook: Jarook not torture. Jarook kill. Monah Bonesetter: *casually* No really it's for fishing. Alaric: You will need the helmets to breathe under water Archibald De Breenie: Does this look as stupid as I think it does? Monah Bonesetter: *removes her cloak* You look magnificent. Jarook: Hm. They made one Jarook's size. Barret Victor: You look like a De Breenie Archibald De Breenie: *snorts* Thank you, dear *dryly* Monah Bonesetter: And your gills are pink and healthy. Barret Victor: Let's go Archibald De Breenie: Go? Can't see where I'm going?!?!?1 Monah Bonesetter: *pulls on a strange pair of flippered boots* Jarook: Smell like anchovies. Archibald De Breenie: Jarook, can I ask you to carry a couple of things?
We now sink beneath the waves with our heroes clad in fish head helmets.
Monah Bonesetter: *uses flippers to paddle on along the bottom* Jarook: *swuish swoosh* Barret Victor: Sharks to the right
A hammerhead shark swims into view to butt heads with Jarook. Jarook wins - eventually.
Archibald De Breenie: Ja...rooookkk....glug glug glug Jarook: Blaab! Barret Victor: Empty
Catching the scent of blood, sharks swarm the party again and again. The pressure of a league of water weighs them down, but still our heroes fight on ultimately winning a respite.
Jarook: *grabs the shark and bites a chunk off him* Jarook: *doesn't because he has a helmet on* Jarook: *just slices a chunk off* Archibald De Breenie: another chest over hereb.. Barret Victor: Almost out of bandages Archibald De Breenie: disbb waybbb Archibald De Breenie: *points* Jarook: Empties. Archibald De Breenie: nothingbbbbb
A final shark catches them unawares and almost carries De Breenie off.
Archibald De Breenie: thisbbb isn't funbbbbb.... Barret Victor: No fooling
At last the sharks beaten off, the party finds a sunken ship. A black stone cube rests in the sands bathed in a shimmering light. A man-shaped spirit formed of water and the remains of an old sailor's uniform paces about the cube.
Jarook: Sppbiritbbb of Waterbb! Archibald De Breenie: uh oh Barret Victor: Gotta take it out though Barret Victor: The crate is there Barret Victor: Attack it with ranged weapons Barret Victor: And spells
They unleash their magics upon it. De Breenie casting it in a miasma of webs. Monah twists her new octopus ring and summons many black tentacles.
Barret Victor: Nice shot Jarook: It caught in webbbb!
The water spirit easily evades the entanglement flowing away from the mess and toward them.
Jarook: It come! Archibald De Breenie: ummm...uh oh Water Elemental: Stoppp p pppp! Archibald De Breenie: did it say...stopbbbb? Barret Victor: I think so Barret Victor: What do you want? Monah Bonesetter: Shhhhhtop as she sayepth! Archibald De Breenie: Barret! Don'tbb give it ourbb namesbbb! Water Elemental: Stopppp pp ppp p Water Elemental: *bloop* Jarook: Hellboob water spbiritbb Water Elemental: Have youuu commmbbebeb to rescuebbb me? Barret Victor: Do you need rescuing? *Bloob bloob* Archibald De Breenie: maaayyyyyyybe Water Elemental: I havebbb bbbeeene tiedbb here forbbb manybbb years. Barret Victor: Why are you tied there *blub blub blub* Water Elemental: Ibbb wasbb a sailorrbbbb Water Elemental: tied to thisbbb crate. Archibald De Breenie: *turns back to her, a slight frown* Archibald De Breenie: Are you related to Captain Corbin, oh water spirit? Water Elemental: Nobbbbb Barret Victor: *Blub blub* We'll free you if you give us the contents of the crate Water Elemental: Captin Jarlusbbbb was mybbb capbbtain Barret Victor: And garuntee us safe passage back to Port Royale Archibald De Breenie: the red? Barret Victor: I suspect he was voluntold Water Elemental: I wasbbb hitbb bovbber the hebbbead Water Elemental: and tiedbbb to the crabbbte Archibald De Breenie: I see *blub blub* Any chance you know what's in that crate? Water Elemental: binbbnding meeebbb to thissbbb waterbbb Archibald De Breenie: Oh good *dryly* didn't wanna make this any easier that it already was.... Barret Victor: And the thing binding you to this water is...? Jarook: No? Jarook think it very complicated. Water Elemental: *looks into the crate ... flows into it actually* Water Elemental: *flows out* Archibald De Breenie: Actualy, Jarook, that's sorta what I meant but....eh....nevermind Water Elemental: A devibbce of strabbbbnge magicbbs Monah Bonesetter: Somesa itemplable of Ppppppower that Corblin wanptsable. Barret Victor: Can you hand it to me? Water Elemental: If youbbbb tabbbe itbb frobb thebb wabbter... i willbbb bee freebbb Monah Bonesetter: P-P-P-Perhaple it will *Blub* broaden his reachuble over the seas? *blurb* Barret Victor: We will take it from the water *blub blub* Archibald De Breenie: Wait a minute! Archibald De Breenie: *glares at Barret* We'd hab no ideab whab it isbbbb Barret Victor: This is true Barret Victor: Go forth and examine it Archibald De Breenie: I likeb disb waterb elementalb as much as the nextbb spiritbbb, but... Monah Bonesetter: We hab our taskuble uble uble *glurp* Archibald De Breenie: Uhh....can I look at it *blub* Water Elemental: *nods in a swirl of bubbles* Archibald De Breenie: Yeah, uh...Jarookbb...comeb wit me, pleasebb? Barret Victor: *Blub* We have a task from Corbin *blub blub* and a task to the greater good of the world. *Blub blub* The latter is more important Jarook: Okayb. Archibald De Breenie: *looks at the crate cautiously, one final glance at the spirit before opening it up*
A sly Mako shark slithers through the water toward them to take a bite out of De Breenie - a very large bite.
Archibald De Breenie: aaaauggghhhhhbbbbbbbb ......I ambbb slainbbbb... Jarook: Bad shark...
The water spirit intervenes, and the two slay each other.
Barret Victor: *Tries to patch Archibald's wounds* Monah Bonesetter: *kick-paddles over to the group*
Unbeknownst to the group, a magic from within the glowing black cube acts upon Archibold, stalling his spirit from escaping to the lands of the dead. Archibald's body floats toward it.
Monah Bonesetter: Thap shark came oup of nowhereth. Jarook: *taps the crate* Jarook: *tries to open it* Barret Victor: *Blub blub* Monah Bonesetter: The blood might attrapppp more. *blorp* Jarook: Shark destroy water spirit.
The force within the black box draws Archibald's soul back into his body. As he awakes he feels the lingering grasp of the unnatural magic.
Archibald De Breenie: umm....carefulbbb Archibald De Breenie: --something-- in there...I think....saved mebbbb Archibald De Breenie: *backs away slightly* Perhapsbbb... Monah Bonesetter: Can you open it Jarookth? Jarook: Will trybbb. Jarook: *hefts his axe over the box* Jarook: *BLOOB!* Archibald De Breenie: Wait! Jarook: *the smash was pathetic anyway. you can't really swing a weapon in a high-pressure underwanter environment* Archibald De Breenie: I mean...this doesn't make sense....if it can survive this....it wn't break easily Barret Victor: We might as well just bring it up *blub blub* Jarook: It stonebb. Archibald De Breenie: Looks very heavy...will take more than us...and I don't know...*trails off* Monah Bonesetter: *feels the surfaces and raps on it with the dagger hilt* Jarook: Has idea! Jarook: Tamebbb shark... shark carry for usbbb. Barret Victor: Sounds good Barret Victor: Sounds good Archibald De Breenie: nobody picks locks...eh...assuming it has one? Jarook: *bites his fingers and lets the blood mix with the water to attract a shark* Archibald De Breenie: No, wait! Archibald De Breenie: That's a horriblebbb ideabbb Monah Bonesetter: *runs her fingers along several grooves that occur in rings along the box's surface* Jarook: Too latesbbbb. Jarook: Kill all sharks, mebbebbb. Archibald De Breenie: gggrrrreeaaatttt Barret Victor: We could drag it to the rope Archibald De Breenie: *watches Monah* Findbb somethingbbb? Barret Victor: And let THEM haul it up Archibald De Breenie: I don't know if I want to haul it up.... Jarook: It too heavy. Stone.
A goblin shark is drawn to the blood and nips Jarook. Jarook tames it with the back of his hand.
Jarook: Bad shark! Goblin Shark: *whimpers a bubble* Archibald De Breenie: *inspects the box, looking for any sort of impresssions or holes* Barret Victor: Try and get it to haul the crate Barret Victor: We won't know what's in it anyways Jarook: It very small sharkbbb. Archibald De Breenie: No way a shark could haul this..not by himself Jarook: Maybe... we tame whalebbb... Archibald De Breenie: *rolls watery eyes* Jarook: or... octupusbb... Jarook: *pats the pet shark* Barret Victor: I still say drag it and have the crew lift it out Archibald De Breenie: NO! Archibald De Breenie: It may have saved my life, but I don't know why it did or what it is Barret Victor: Well we can't stay down here forever Archibald De Breenie: I say we tell him we can't fnd it. *looks pointedly at Monah* Jarook: We promisebbb. Archibald De Breenie: We don't know who Jarlus the Red ...or what this does.....it would be foolish to do this Jarook: *checks if the box has a lid and finds one*
As soon as his attention is off the shark it takes a nip out of Barret. Jarook disciplines it by cleaving it in two.
Jarook: Not listenbbb for longbb. Archibald De Breenie: So...... Barret Victor: I still say we haul it up Jarook: Yusbbb. Archibald De Breenie: Of all people, Barret, I'm surprised *glares at Jarook* You just agreed with me! Barret Victor: If worst comes to worst, we can kill everyone on board Archibald De Breenie: WHAT?!?!?!? Jarook: Yus!!! Archibald De Breenie: did that water spirit addle your mind? Barret Victor: I'm just laying possibilities out Jarook: Maybbbbee other cratessbbb got helpbbb. Jarook: Nobbb. Jarook: *kicks the box* Archibald De Breenie: Uhhh....Jarook? Archibald De Breenie: Perhaps we ought not to kick the black box of power? Barret Victor: Well, we can't stand around here forever Barret Victor: I say we bring it back, and go from there Archibald De Breenie: I say we head back, without the crate. Jarook: Yusbbb. Jarook: Bring backbbb. Jarook: We need ropebbb. Monah Bonesetter: Corpin knowps more apout this thatpth we doop. He wanth it so we rope it ubb.
While they discuss their options all of the shark corpses are pulled toward the black box. As they reach the light they turn to kelp. A forest of kelp grows magically out of the sandy sea bottom, and up between the legs of our heroes to tower over their heads.
Jarook: We atatcked by kelpsbbb! Jarook: *cuts them!* Archibald De Breenie: Yes, but I don't know much about Corbin either! Archibald De Breenie: *add blub* Jarook: *cut swing cut* Monah Bonesetter: I hap rope-a-lope! Archibald De Breenie: they "volunteered" a man to watch over this thing....That should tell us something!!!! Jarook: Man dead. Shark kill Barret Victor: True Jarook: *bloob* Monah Bonesetter: These marps are made for rope. *glarp* We tie on ad pulp! Archibald De Breenie: Jarook, stop! As a pumpkin-brother, I ask you to stop Jarook: Stop whatbbb? Jarook: Spiritbbb bacckbbb! Archibald De Breenie: tying the box with the rope Water Elemental: *drawn to the box* Monah Bonesetter: *starts to cut seaweeds at their bases* Monah Bonesetter: *slash slash through the water* Archibald De Breenie: Bah....no one is listening....do what you willl! Jarook: It okay, The Bbbbbbbbbbbbrie. Jarook: It save your lifebbbbb... Barret Victor: Let's just get it up and out of here Barret Victor: Tie some rope on, and let's go Jarook: Rune Casterbbb making ropebbb... Archibald De Breenie: But for what purpose....why didn't corbin tell us....*shrugs* whatever you think --paladin-- let the consequences lie on your head Barret Victor: *Nods* Let's go Monah Bonesetter: *throws a loop of rope and waits for it to settle around the box* Jarook: Yusbbb. Monah Bonesetter: *throws another and ties it off* Barret Victor: If necessary, we can scuttle the ship, and walk back Archibald De Breenie: *snorts derisively*
Monah ties up the box with a net of kelp and rope. She holds another coil in her hands and assesses the swim to the surface.
Monah Bonesetter: I have the rope, and I have these flipppppers on my feet. *ploop* Monah Bonesetter: I can swimp the rope to the surface. Barret Victor: Alright Barret Victor: Do so Monah Bonesetter: *looks waaaaaay up to where the light penetrates the depths* Monah Bonesetter: *flippers up onto the top of the box* Archibald De Breenie: wait a minute! Monah Bonesetter: *looks down at Archibald* Archibald De Breenie: Where did she get those? Barret Victor: I don't know, and frankly I don't care Monah Bonesetter: Same place I found the helmeps. Monah Bonesetter: *bloop* Barret Victor: Now, go Monah Barret Victor: We've been here long enough Jarook: Jarookbb think this bad newsbb... but Jarook *blurb* know thatbb if goes wrongbb, he kill everyonebbb infectedbbb... Archibald De Breenie: she's going to be the one who --- conveniently-- is up on top with the rope? Monah Bonesetter: *flippers up towards the surface*
With the magical flippers Monah swims to the surface, loops of rope uncoiling behind her. She breaches the surface, one last kick jettisoning her to the deck of THE CORALYN where she flops unceremoniously, the last loop of rope still in her hands. Meanwhile BELOW THE SURFACE, Archibald still argues caution.
Archibald De Breenie: This is quite possibly the worst idea and plan ever! Barret Victor: *Ties the rope onto the box and gives some sharp pulls* You could be right Barret Victor: You could be wrong Barret Victor: But just standing looking at it doesn't give us any answers at all Archibald De Breenie: Even If I'm wrong, it's still the worst idea Archibald De Breenie: We don't have to bring it up!
The rope pulls taught, and the black box begins to rise pulled in heaves by Corbin's crew.
Archibald De Breenie: Too late now *sighs* Jarook: This is matter of honour. Archibald De Breenie: Whose honor? Jarook: All of us! Barret Victor: Let's climb on up Archibald De Breenie: *sighs* Very well
Our sunken heroes try to swim upwards to grab hold of the black box and climb the rope, but the weight of their gear and the muck of the sea bottom holds them in place. The water spirit returns to watch the source of its curse pulled away.
Archibald De Breenie: Well, water spirit, I hope there is at least good news for you
The black box rises out of sight and the spirit fades, a look of relief on its face. Another rope glides down from above. It sinks to the floor improperly tied to the ship. Another is sent in its place this time tied properly to the railing, ad our heroes at last climb from the sea with the help of THE CORALYN's crew.
Monah Bonesetter: *watches crewmen heave aboard the metal tuna* Monah Bonesetter: *and De Breenie* Alaric: Heh.. look what we caught Barret Victor: Whooo, that was rough *blub blub* Archibald De Breenie: *sputters* so what's this all about...where's the crate? Alaric: We stowed it below Archibald De Breenie: Yeah....and that's it? Alaric: And .... *finger held up* Alaric: your payment. Barret Victor: I don't think this is Corbin's ship at all. We haven't even seen him. I say we scuttle it and make our way back with our new found swimming masks Monah Bonesetter: Its a long walk. And there are a lot of sharks down there. Alaric: *hands you a bag of coins* Archibald De Breenie: *nods to Barret, looking back at Jarook* Alaric: *hands each of you a bag of coins* Archibald De Breenie: Stop right there! *points crossbow at Al* Monah Bonesetter: You can trust that the Coralyn is Corbin's ship. It is named for his mother. Barret Victor: *Straps his shield on his arm and draws his sword* Jarook: *spills the coins fron the bag into a cavity in one of his skulls* Barret Victor: Ships can be repainted Alaric: *blinks* Archibald De Breenie: I want to see Corbin...now! IF this is really his ship Monah Bonesetter: *hisses* THEY HANG MUTINEERS! Alaric: *holds a hand to still the crew* Barret Victor: Aye Archibald De Breenie: They hang spies too *eyes Monah pointedly* Jarook: This not Korbin's ship? Barret Victor: Draw your axe Jarook Alaric: *sighs* Jarook: *growls* Has Jarook been lied to?! Barret Victor: We think so Barret Victor: Bring out the chest and Corbin Alaric: *holds up his hands* Archibald De Breenie: I don't know. But this is fishy....pardon the pun Monah Bonesetter: *quiets and steps back from the party* Barret Victor: In fact, your entire ballast needs to be searched Alaric: Hold on. Lets not be too hasty. Archibald De Breenie: You've been nothing but hasty, --sir-- Barret Victor: Lest you have more than one black crate Alaric: Corbin! *calling down through the grate* Jarook: *motions to grab Alaric by his clothes* Jarook: Blood shall spill this night! Archibald De Breenie: hold, Jarook!
Corbin strides over to the grate still below decks to answer their demands.
Corbin: What is this all about? Archibald De Breenie: I want to know about the crate, Corbin! Barret Victor: Corbin, come up Barret Victor: With whatever is in the crate Barret Victor: Otherwise, we're scuttling your boat Corbin: We can talk in Port. I'm a bit busy at the moment. Barret Victor: Well we're not, but we can make ourselves busy real fast Corbin: I wouldn't recommend it. Alaric will make short work of the lot of you. Jarook: *seething* Jarook is betrayed! Barret Victor: We've been making a lot of short work of a lot of big work you've given us Corbin: And I believe you've just been paid. Barret Victor: Chump change at that Corbin: Now if you'd kindly put the weapons away we can get you home. Archibald De Breenie: WE talk in Port Royale BEFORE we dock! Corbin: Just put the weapons away. Archibald De Breenie: I'm not entirel sure the Queen would be happy about a powerful black box in her city...neither would Jessup for that matter.... Jarook: *growls* Monah Bonesetter: *disrobes and pulls on a dry skirt and blouse* Archibald De Breenie: And I don't have to tell you the reputation that the de Breenies' have with the Queen *sniffs, putting away his crossbow*
Rather than bother with them further Corbin returns to whatever mysterious business keeps him below decks even amidst a potential mutiny.
Alaric: Are we ready to calm down? Barret Victor: I am perfectly calm Barret Victor: But this high air of secrecy is more than a little suspicious Archibald De Breenie: That black crate saved my life down there, sir. dont' expect me to be so willing to go along with this little setup Jarook: If Jarook is betrayed, then he will not rest until the corpse of Korbin and his crew lay before him in blood! This, he swear in blood! *motions to cut his wrist horizontally with his axe, allowing the blood to pour on the deck* Alaric: *looks at the blood then to Jarook* Alaric: *shakes head* Alaric: Let me get to my work. Monah Bonesetter: *sits* Alaric: *calls to the crew to get busy* Jarook: Yus. You go work. Archibald De Breenie: You have my word as a de Breenie there will be no violence....unless we are forced to it. Archibald De Breenie: *looks over at Monah* As for you. *glares down at her*
The crew had been watching the exchange, knives at the ready, waiting for the signal to pounce. Yet at Alaric's signal they returned to their work and THE CORALYN was once more at full sail, heading home to PORT ROYALE. The hours pass tensely. The crew is silent. All silent save for one obscure voice from below decks, possibly Corbin's, possibly someone else.
Monah Bonesetter: I'm sure there is an adequate explanation. I'm just not sure we're entitled- Monah Bonesetter: What? *slight trace of defensiveness* Jarook: There is no honor in Korbin and his crew. If Jarook reaches land safe, Korbin is still enemy. Archibald De Breenie: If you were as willing to go along with every endeavor as you were this one, I have no doubt you'd be dead by now! *eyes narrow* Not a word from you once, not any sort of discussion save let's move forward. Monah Bonesetter: You had doubts. I did not. Archibald De Breenie: And why not? Monah Bonesetter: Who can say? Archibald De Breenie: I asked questions, but as always, you blew them off Monah Bonesetter: You saw what I did? Archibald De Breenie: What do you mean? Monah Bonesetter: That map, and the accompanying text. Archibald De Breenie: What about it? *impatient* Monah Bonesetter: With our help, Captain Corbin recovered something of great power, perhaps. And it is returning to Port with us. Archibald De Breenie: You don't even care what it might do? Barret Victor: Well, yes, but we don't know if it's a GOOD power or a BAD power Archibald De Breenie: You're hardly one to talk, Baret *quietly through clenched teeth* Monah Bonesetter: Is that your concern? Archibald De Breenie: Shouldn't it be? Monah Bonesetter: It just seems so abstract. Better to ask if Corbin is a good person, or a bad person. Jarook: *growls at Frog as he passes too close* Archibald De Breenie: *laughs* Oh you're good, my dear. I can see why he likes you. *shakes his head* Pointless...*sighs, turning around* Monah Bonesetter: *smirks* He does not like me. Alaric: Here we are. Archibald De Breenie: well that makes two of us...*curtly* Barret Victor: Thank the gods Barret Victor: Get me ashore Archibald De Breenie: No! Jarook: Yus. Alaric: Frog. Archibald De Breenie: We're going to have a lttle talk Monah Bonesetter: *gathers her cloak around herself*
THE CORALYN returns to PORT ROYALE. Frog, with that perennial grin, takes our heroes to shore. The familiar sight of the docks is a relief for some if not all, but nevertheless that is where Frog ties up the skiff and urges them to disembark.
Seamus "Frog" Lund: 'ere ye are. *grins* Archibald De Breenie: well, yes...about that talk.... Barret Victor: I do not know yet what we have set in motion tonight Barret Victor: But I am sure we will know later Archibald De Breenie: right....*dryly* time to get some sleep, Barret? Jarook: Jarook not afraid. Barret Victor: You have no idea Monah Bonesetter: We will see the Captain again I think. Then you all can question him directly. Barret Victor: By the way, the pay was slim too Archibald De Breenie: *walks up to Frog, getting in his face* You tell your captain that I wish to see him as soon as he's able. *finger in his face* Seamus "Frog" Lund: *smiles unperturbed* Seamus "Frog" Lund: Rigth o Archibald De Breenie: Unless he wants the De Breenie family on his bad side...and that woulnd't be good Barret Victor: For such an artifact of power, a few hundred gold here and there ain't much Monah Bonesetter: There was this, as well Barret. Seamus "Frog" Lund: 'orbin's a good man. I bet ye kin negotiate wit 'im next toime Jarook: Korbin is like goblin. Sneaky, lying.... Archibald De Breenie: Riiigghhht. Sure thing there, --Frog--..... Seamus "Frog" Lund: *shrugs* Archibald De Breenie: And --what-- are you saying, deary? Barret Victor: That trident doesn't do any of us much good Monah Bonesetter: If Barret isn't happy with his share, he an sell this. Since none of us can use it. Monah Bonesetter: Or for that matter, you could Archibald. Barret Victor: I'm not so worried about the gold Monah Bonesetter: Or you Jarook. Barret Victor: But I would rather have gotten something useful out of all this Archibald De Breenie: Rest assured dear, I'm not taking anything from you Jarook: Jarook not care for gold. Jarook do this for battle-brother Korbin. He not that anymore. Archibald De Breenie: Now here's your share of the gold I found... At least I am an honorable man. Monah Bonesetter: Why don't you hear from him before you go off the deep end. Monah Bonesetter: So to speak. Archibald De Breenie: Oh, I will. Jarook: Yus, speak to Korbin. See what he say. If words are like lying Goblin, or honor Orclun. Monah Bonesetter: That's quite a bit of gold, Archibald. Jarook: *looks at the gold and shrugs, letting it pour into the skull with the rest of it* Monah Bonesetter: I also found something else. Archibald De Breenie: Trust me, dear, It's all I can do to give your share without retching. Take it Monah Bonesetter: Perhaps I have something that will interest you. Barret Victor: I am off to the Four Winds Monah Bonesetter: I found this ring, with those helms and flippers. Archibald De Breenie: What? *cross* Barret Victor: Perhaps we shall cross paths again Archibald De Breenie: Good night, Barret Jarook: Honor to you, sleepy paladin. Monah Bonesetter: You saw me use it, against that spirit we met at the black stone box. Archibald De Breenie: and? Monah Bonesetter: It is yours if you want it. If no, I need nothing more. Monah Bonesetter: Keep your gold. Jarook: Jarook leave too. Axe rusty from water. Need to sharpen. Archibald De Breenie: *stews for a minute, then finally a loud sigh* fine! fine, fine...give me the ring Monah Bonesetter: *looks from Jarook to Archibald* Archibald De Breenie: against my better judgment Archibald De Breenie: you want no gold? Jarook: Goodbyes. Archibald De Breenie: And only because you saved my life.... Archibald De Breenie: goodbye, Jarook Monah Bonesetter: Goodbye Jarook. Archibald De Breenie: What --is-- it with you and Corbin anyway? Monah Bonesetter: *moves in to share a secret* Monah Bonesetter: He hates me. Monah Bonesetter: And I find that irresistable. Monah Bonesetter: Remember that, Archibald De Breenie. Archibald De Breenie: So you said *quietly* But why...ehh....why? Monah Bonesetter: Superficial reasons. He doesn't know enough to hate me for any other. Monah Bonesetter: Again, when you speak with Corbin I think you should ask him. Archibald De Breenie: I will, deary. Have no doubt of that... Monah Bonesetter: Good. Monah Bonesetter: And goodbye, Archibald. Archibald De Breenie: *considers her once more, unsure* Archibald De Breenie: Hmmm....Indeed....*arches a brow* Well, I look forward to it, mark my word as a de Breenie Archibald De Breenie: Nothing's ever easy, is it? *sighs to no one in particular* Novus Aristi Healer: *sighs* Nope Archibald De Breenie: Well, I suppose you of all people would know *chagrined smile* Novus Aristi Healer: But that Corbin is a good man. Archibald De Breenie: Is he? *turns quickly* Archibald De Breenie: You know of him? Novus Aristi Healer: He's the one who's been supplying us. Novus Aristi Healer: Food. Medicines... Archibald De Breenie: Really? *skeptical* Novus Aristi Healer: *nods* Archibald De Breenie: *snaps fingers* the rowers....dang, I had forgotten. Novus Aristi Healer: Takes very little from his trade. Archibald De Breenie: Mentioned something about the greater good, though I thought it was a ruse of sorts Novus Aristi Healer: Alaric? Archibald De Breenie: *shrugs* Perhaps it was him, I don't know. I thought the term was used by you all....the Aristi I mean, but it's all I know Novus Aristi Healer: Corbin's pilot, Alaric, .. I know him from Ladriel. Novus Aristi Healer: He's one of us. Novus Aristi Healer: Good man. Novus Aristi Healer: *nods* Archibald De Breenie: He....is? *face suddenly downcast* Novus Aristi Healer: *shrugs* Archibald De Breenie: Well, I feel rather....*pauses, then looks up at the man* nevermind....well, thank you for that Novus Aristi Healer: But even good men make mistakes now and then. Novus Aristi Healer: Who knows? Archibald De Breenie: Indeed. Novus Aristi Healer: Anyway.... Novus Aristi Healer: I need to get back to work. Novus Aristi Healer: Take care of yourself, De Breenie. Archibald De Breenie: Of course. Thank you again. Archibald De Breenie: Indeed, indeed *muttering*

A 10-page missive is sent to the captain of the Coralyn. Full of flowery and garish language, it is part ode to de Breenie greatness, part lecture on loyalty, tradition and values, part mildly veiled threat to the captain and part query to make an appointment for a meeting. With a little effort, it could be distilled into such:
Dear Captain Corbin:
I take great umbrage at being shanghaied by your cast of ne’er-do-wells into an expedition to acquire some artifact of which you are apparently reticent to speak, especially when I lost my life on said trip only to be revived by means which are not yet clear.
Such behavior not only reflects poorly on your judgment and personae, but threatens the city and its inhabitants, many of whom have already suffered greatly. I pray you will think of others beyond just yourself.
As a devout and acknowledged defender of Port Royale, it is my duty to investigate this threat you have brought into the city. I demand a meeting with you to discuss said artifact and what it is you intend to do with it.
I have hesitated to bring this to the attention of the Queen and my fellow nobles, as my colleague, Barret Victor, has vouched for you. But given his recent behavior and dubious background, you can see how this would hardly allay my fears. It will be my duty to report you to the appropriate authorities with much alacrity if you will not agree to said meeting.
I await your response.
Sincerely,
Archibald Stanton Rosemont de Breenie IV

Re: A Call to Adventure on the High Seas Posted: 31 Oct 2007 07:10 PM |
Corbin skims segments of De Breenie's treatise during visits to the toilet over a handful of days.
"This is getting out of hand," he says at last to the narrow walls about him while sitting on the throne. A lamp dangles rocking on a hook overhead. While he needs the light for reading primarily, it burns the stink to his satisfaction as well.
In the hold outside, the thing with his mother's voice trips over a bucket and topples over in a mess of mops and sudsy deck swabbings. "Corbin!" it calls. She. It. Whatever.
"Out of hand," he says between clenched teeth. He finishes his business and fastidiously puts himself back together. The lamplight plays across his elegant yet strong features as he examines himself in the mirror. I'm more noble, more lordly than any DeBreenie could dream of... and more the bastard.... "Curse you, father," he curses before catching himself.
He emerges at last with the lamp extinguished. With one hand he helps the patchwork lump to its feet not daring to look at it. "Easy there, Coralyn," he whispers. "It takes awhile to get your sea legs."
The thing lets out an unintelligible howl of a lament.
"As soon as I figure this out we'll have you in one piece, but I need you to wait quietly for me here."
"OK, Corbin," it says in a manner uncannily like his mother's and then it reaches out to push a loose lock of hair back around his ear.
He flinches stuck between revulsion at the thing and revulsion at himself for enjoying the contact.
"Just wait for me down here when we return to Port. I will have to leave the ship for awhile, but will return later."
It nods. "But its so dark."
"Frog will set lanterns over the grates."
"Thank you. You've been so good to me."
A tear rolls down his cheek. "Right," he says. "Well... back to work." Before his boots hit the deck once more he puts his rakish grin and swagger on for display. His crew does not let on that they can see his pain. Appearances. Keep up appearances, he says to himself, repeating the mantra his father had taught him as a boy, the same mantra that had kept his parents apart.
"..have got to keep up appearances." |

Re: A Call to Adventure on the High Seas Posted: 02 Nov 2007 06:35 PM |
A letter, sealed with the de Breenie insignia, is sent to:
Barret Victor c/o The couch in the front of the fireplace The Four Winds Inn
Sir Victor:
This message is meant for all of my retinue but I fear that Jarook and the badger girl are illiterate and everyone else is no doubt too wrapped up in themselves to give the matter a second glance. I suspect that bard fellow would look over the document, fail to see a musical note and wander off to go find a drink.
But I digress.
You mentioned to me that you had spoken with Captain Corbin and that your fears and concerns had been allayed. I too now have spoken with Captain Corbin concerning the matter of our recent expedition aboard the Coralyn and the finding of the artifact within the black crate. And I can only reach one inescapable conclusion.
Barret, you are an idiot.
The captain was, at best, evasive in his answers. He remarked that the artifact is too powerful to be used publicly and is worried about its potential to be misused. Yet, at the same time, he sees no problem using it himself for his own ends even as he acknowledges that he hasn’t managed to use the artifact as intended and cure his mother. Nor is there any indication of what has happened to said mother and how she came to be that way. The Aristi say the captain is a good man, and perhaps so, but when family is involved, one can become blind to common sense and good advice.
We must act, Barret. Surely, you must realize that.
The Coralyn remains docked in the harbor, although I have noticed that its skiff carries people to and from the ship on occasion. We must watch over the ship, follow its crew when it lands and scour (discretely!) the city for any news of Captain Corbin, his family and any recent stories that might shed some light on this situation.
While I am too well known in the city to engage in such subterfuge, and you are likely to fall asleep at a moment’s notice, the badger girl may prove to be good at such activities should there be a way to make her realize the importance of what’s going on. Jarook may be also helpful given the crew is likely to stay in lower Port.
Let us meet soon to discuss our next steps.

((This seems as good a place to put this as any))
Anyone looking in the Four Winds to find Barret sleeping in his normal couch will no longer find him there. If guards and rangers and the like are asked, they will say that they have seen him sleeping out under the stars further and further from civilization every night. |

The Coralyn Berthed in Port Royale Posted: 08 Nov 2007 09:53 PM |
The Delivery
The Coralyn makes berth in Port to unload supplies. Corbin comes ashore with several crew all armed to guard the goods. One of the crewmen stands out from the others, a shambling oaf of a man with a misshapen and scarred face. Perhaps he was once run over by a cart or perhaps several times. Then later perhaps he was tended to by a quickling doctor with a rusty razor. Just the appearance of this frightful mess of a man keeps even Jessup's thugs at bay. The delivery is a success.
Some say the man's name is "Chris".
Then curiously Corbin continues out of Port on foot with the cart still heavily laden. Some of the crew and the oaf follow with him.
Later it is said that a large delivery was made at the Seven Sisters.
Corbin does not return. When his crew returns to the Coralyn, there is no sign of Chris. |

Embarrasing.
Embarassing is what it was. And if it was the best Captain Corbin could do, and surely he had been the one to send her, then Archibald was hardly impressed.
That the woman's name had been Coralyn, the same as the ship? What a giveaway. And then to try to pretend she was noble? She didn't even look like a Voorhies. And he knew all of them...or at least the females.
Then there had been the way she had ridden a horse. And smoked. And drank from a flask. And pick-pocketed a scroll from him, which he had pretended not to notice.
Was this the best Corbin could do? It seemed odd, given that he seemed relatively slick. And why send her anyway? What was he trying to gain? Or was it simply just a grand coincidence?
No, he shook his head, sitting back in his chair at the Four Winds. Something was going on, more pieces on the board being introduced. Otse the badger girl had followed Corbin and his crew to the Seven Sisters, where rumor had it a large package had been dropped off. Was it the crate, or whatever had been inside it? Did this mean that his mother had been cured, or he had just given up? And why send this woman, who didn't seem to have many skills at all?
He was glad he had feigned interest in her, told her he wanted to meet her privately. He smiled faintly, drumming his fingers on the table absently.
Yes, Coralyn Voorhies...or whoever you are...I will look forward to meeting you again very shortly. |
