In no particular order:
Serai Rosen Marlena PDW PD DiabloStan BKatt Kalannar Illistynn Chief Robber Barron Bolgryn LowFatPretzels Vulpina Vince Klortho Imperious Wicked Keen
And all the rest of you who I know I forgot to mention but still made my earliest experiences on Vives absolutely amazing, and really helped breath some life into the place. Guys and girls, come back and visit us! Some of us actually miss you! I know a few of you must still be lurking around here. |

I'm certain as to why two of those people aren't on. I have a good idea why three people aren't present. And I have a faint inkling about the reason behind the absences of four others.
It's very unfortunate, but almost none of those seem to be willing to return. ):

Serai is putting in a lot of overtime hours at work. She still checks the boards however and reads what folks are occupying their spare time with.
Mmm... spare time. Need some of that.

That's right I'm onto you RB!
Robber Barron lost Robber Barron's login password...and the Arrogant Worm one. And I haven't logged in since May, in any guise, honest.
I still check the boards. It's hard to have played as much as I did and not be curious about how it's all going to end.
Marlena had moved on to WOW last I spoke to her (a long time ago, admittedly).
I'm still waiting for Rosen to write her great American novel, and to read it. No insult intended to anyone, but she was the best writer Vives saw, at least in the time since I had joined the server.
Vince Klortho is a developer and DM on a NWN2 PW that, I believe, is now up and running.
And I bought NWN2 last May, loaded it up, and started playing on an NWN2 PW (Not VK's, his wasn't up at the time).
This may sound indelicate, but playing on Vives 1 right now, to me, would seem ever so slightly like joining the orchestra on the Titanic. I'm tuning in to see how it all ends, but character building and character development here looks to have an abrupt end coming.
It's nice to not be totally forgotten. I miss roleplaying with most of the names on Talos' list, and with those of you I see in-game when I check out the forums. Vives was the first multiplayer computer game I really got into (I just can't count online scrabble and trivia games in that), and for that it will always hold a special place in my heart.
I do hope to run into many of you folks in that amorphous sea of anonymity that is online RPGs. We just might not know it .
Cheers,
Me. |

You know, I'm seeing an awful lot of excuses and not very much getting back in game.
Maybe I wasn't clear in the thread title.
*peers around*
And I have an idea on why some of the people on my list aren't around any more, and blame the rest of them on NWN2 already, but just because you move away doesn't mean you can't come back and visit.
Barnas, I've seen you on the registered users list, you get back here too!
This may sound indelicate, but playing on Vives 1 right now, to me, would seem ever so slightly like joining the orchestra on the Titanic.
I'd like to remind you, in case you've forgotten, the band played on. They didn't let some silly iceberg and imminent death get in their way.

Re: Hey, you! Yeah you! Get back here! Posted: 07 Sep 2007 01:20 PM |
With all due respect, playing any game system is like buying a ticket on the Titanic. Player attrition to "the next best thing" I expect will always happen despite my own personal desire that NWN1 remains viable forever. As a player, I take my character's development one day at a time because I just can't count on it not being stopped cold by any number of things, including RL committments or events. If Vives1 dies tomorrow, I would be content with the fun I've already had (heck, the price was right) and move on to the next bit of fun with a new one.
I expect this sort of game system withering to be much harder on developers. Looking at the sheer size of the NWNVault community content and the established and sound performance of NWN1 it seems hard to leave behind for something that is still in its infancy and struggling to overcome its own hurdles within the community, including the admittedly steep learning curve toward learning the tools (vague assessment of the situation, for those in the know, my perception may need to be altered). Will there always be players willing to join NWN1 servers or will NWN2 claim them all because it is in fact better or has the potential to be better? Or will the kinks in NWN2 toward making a richer world be too slow to get knocked out before another online game system claims the players? |

I hear ya Talos... and I would also like to tip my hat to the various faces that have drifted across the sea of Vives... all the personalities who have left their mark on this universe we have collectively created, and more personally, on myself as well.
And a thank you to T'mok If Vives1 dies tomorrow, I would be content with the fun I've already had (heck, the price was right) and move on to the next bit of fun with a new one. for reminding me to look at it with the eyes that see how much fun I have had here over the years, playing along side some gifted roleplayers, and memorable characters, rather than the "ok, any moment now the iceberg is going to hit" eyes.
As to the why I am not in game much these days... I sort of wish it -was- the "I have found a new and incredible game that has ensnared my affections, so that I have no time for anything else" excuse... But alas, mine is one of simple (or rather, drastic) shifting of RL commitments and time/availability.
I still find it astounding that so much of a “normal” persons life is taken up by work. Leaving seemingly very little time for doing things we really enjoy. Why does it have to be run this way? I would like to lodge a formal complaint to the management, and ask that our days can be flipped, needing to only put an hour or two into doing “work” (and to be fair, it should be split up into... oh, no more than 5 to 20 minute blocks, scattered throughout the day) and giving us long stretches of hours upon hours in which to do things that are fun, creative and fulfilling.
In any case... I’m still in the orchestra (even if it’s... ‘hanging onto the railing with one hand, and a kazoo in the other’) I’ve just got a lot of work to do in the boiler room, and don’t get up on deck to play much these days.
But again, thank you all for doing your part to transform Vives into something beautiful. And I’ll see you on my smoke breaks... kazoo in hand. *smirks* |

Well, it's good to get some replies at least. I still hope a few more of those strays come by and at least say: "Hi, here I am, haven't been ate by wolves yet!"

I still exist, and occasionally check the forums. And I am almost certain that I have not been mauled by a pack of wolves.
I find it hard to play these days, being in the crazy timezone that I live in. And I am also drawing near to finishing up my final year at uni. |

| I rarely find anyone on the server in my timezone anymore so I have not felt motivated to play as of late. I have not been active the past year or so because of this. Just checking the forums and waiting for Vives 2 and hoping more people from the GMT - GMT +2 timezones will join. Because of this my main character has become a stranger to the current events and I do not feel like he is fitting in with what is happening. Feels more like Garrak is a relic from the past quietly watching the world die away while still holding on to some distant memories. To be honest I have been looking around for another NWN2 PW but find it hard to leave Vives which has become a second home so to speak. I am hoping Vives 2 will bring more people from my timezone. |

Re: Hey, you! Yeah you! Get back here! Posted: 15 Sep 2007 03:35 PM |
At first when I saw this thread, I was going to write how I felt that the fact that the End is coming makes me want to grab a bowl of popcorn and get a front row seat because I want to see how it ends, as if it was a great movie, not a sinking ship. After Garrak’s post I was going to write that I, too, hope that there will be more GMT(+) people playing Vives 2. I'm such a lazy writer.
Now, after reading lots and lots of old posts and shoutouts, I feel... depressed. Until now, I hadn’t really thought about how many great players have disappeared. It sucks! I’ve passed the point where I could happily craft alone for hours and hours and it really bums me that when I’d be able to play (which is considerably less than it used to be), most of the time there’s no-one around. Apart from Ritz, who seems to be aiming for ”the most hours spent IG” title with Tris ;). Actually, if it wasn’t for him, I’d probably have called it quits here, not being able to keep up with what’s going on in the world since I’m never around during the ”golden hour”, to borrow Renter’s expression. And naturally, since the golden hour is in the middle of the night for me, I’ll miss most of the events as well, unless I force myself to stay awake/wake up ridiculously early (and apparently damage my health by doing so). </whine>
My point is... err, I don’t really have a point, other than wanting to get this out of my system and telling that I miss the olden times! *sniffles* |

I know, it's so depressing. I re-read the whole log when Karli got turned to a statue, and when Alton imploded Vrodo. Read some of the old shoutouts as well, great times.
Edit: And I nearly forgot about the poor gnome who was sacrificed to a trash-bin. Another of my favorite experiences.
Maybe that whole sinking ship feeling is what's ran most away. If there was something to counteract that feeling, there might yet be hope of getting more folks back in game. People invest a lot of time in their characters on Vives just to get to a point where they can be useful, so knowing it's all going to come to an end shortly (well, eventually) makes you wonder why bother.
Sure nothing lasts forever, no one plays the same games for the rest of their lives, but to be told "Hey, we're almost done here, this server will at some point soon be no more." kind of saps you of any desire to bother with it.
Something to think about at least. |

Re: Hey, you! Yeah you! Get back here! Posted: 16 Sep 2007 09:20 AM |
NWN2 has sold how many copies? I'm pretty sure that it has not reached the number that NWN1 has.
I have checked Vives at each log in for the last week...not a single player in game. So I go some where else...no fun to role play by yourself. Besides...I have dm and guild leader responsibilities elsewhere now.
I do miss the old days when you could log in and see 10-12 players on Vives never were you on alone for long.
I also have a new job and less time to play.
And as for Talos...follow your own advice. Haven';t seen you or anybody else logged in.
It is a shame to me to see such a large and varied work go to a refuse heap. Vives was the first world I ever played. It was fun, infuriating, challenging enlightening. Thanks all who took part.
As for Vives 2 I don't have the hardware to run it well and likely won't have NWN2 for months. My understanding of the new version is that there will be some great obstacles to running a world as large as Vives is on and NWN2 server. It might be done with several servers and portals though. Or even one static mod and say another for event mods. Of course this is all just heresay so feel free to correct my misinformation. |
