New Areas - Some Constructive Criticism
Posted: 18 Jun 2007 03:46 AM
A few of us where traveling around last night (depending on timezones of course) and ended up coming across some of new stuff that had suddenly sprung up. We spent a couple of hours being sailed about to a bunch of very awesome looking areas. They all look fantastic. Though I thought that considering it is new, some feedback would be useful, and some constructive criticism?

We quickly found that there is an elf/half-elf restriction on the entire transport system. Another player and I were discussing the matter, and we both agreed that though there are most likely very good reasons why such a restriction exists, we still both thought that the restriction made in such an inflexible mechanical manner was a little too much. We could think of many RP-able ways which one might bypass such a restriction.

Restrictions that work in the opposite manner, giving privilege to a small group work well. Such as the Ferein dock, where elves/half-elves are able to travel for free, though others must pay. The reverse seems not to work as well, and in many cases (such as ours) makes having fun, rping and exploring new places, a little difficult. Another example of this was the flying machine, which would not transport Helkrisians. Once again, for a good reason. The creator of the machine was a servant of Vilyave. Though unless he is gifted with magical sight, it is difficult to understand how he could differentiate so easily between a Helkrisian and any other resident of Vives.

I am not sure exactly what a agreeable solution would be. Perhaps a steep fee for elves would be appropriate. Such could cover various rp situations such as where the elven traveler might bribe the ferryman, or perhaps could represent the gold they used to gather and purchase some makeup to apply a convincing disguise, etc. So basically, the extra gold does not necessarily have to simply mean an elf must pay more, but can also represent the extra effort that is required for them to be able to travel by those means.

Once again, this is just a little feed back. Not a complain (I don't even have a single elven or half elven character ; ) ). The areas all look wonderful, and the level of detail is exceptional. It would just be great if it could be shared with everyone.

There are other travel systems going to be implemented as an alternative. I don't think it's spoiling anything to say that Corbin's already put things into motion which will open up some of those ports via the Coralyn (and at 1/4 the price too). Expect it as of 3-24-0.

The Inner Sea is already free for Elves.

The Brandibuck/Paws route is already open to everyone via the Wave'opper.

All the other places are accessible by land already. There are some land routes about to be opened up near/around there too - I've been meaning to expand the Kusin/Jusin business, and Shira and Rita's routes, for a while, as well as... oooh, no. I won't say. The other travel thing is just too cool to give away.

This was a test run to see if the scripts I'd implemented worked (as people may have noticed, I've been ironing the bugs out of the scripts - thank you all for your patience... and for ruthlessly slapping me around with trouts until it finally worked).

The one place that probably won't be accessible is the island... if/when Gladden stuff happens, it won't matter anyway.

I'd meant to put up a couple of IC posts but it takes sooo long to write stuff up. I figured peeps would prefer it if I chucked this stuff IG first and did the posts later. The posts will come, umm, when they're done. Still got some bugs and stuff to iron out and some other areas to work on.

PS. I've had the major travel hotspots marked out and been planning the travel system overhaul for over a year now... so never fear, all the major places will be available for everyone to travel to in one form or another!

Pffft, why would Helkrisians (or for that matter Naruthians) want to go to Aerialle? I never thought that it's in their dogma to be smitten with the full fury of the mythical River Smitten, source of all smiting and smiteliness and anything smitelikeliness. Really, it'd make no sense for them to stroll around there even for a brief second just to yell "Gasp! Scandalous!" - Aerialle is different from the Cold Lands or Fiirhallen, the fact that's it's waaaaay above ground should hint that!

WickedArtist: I think he needs a proper elf.
WickedArtist: A christmas elf!
Tasra: Any sort of elf that actually smiles ;o

Gasp! Scandalous!!!

Then again, I'm pretty sure some Helkrisians would want to be able to quickly travel to, say, Icy Vale.

I think that was Pretzel's point here.

Bumberknobwobblycog air taxi service has been discontinued to Icy Vale because Fabius thinks Helkrisians are oh so unfabulous.

Yeah, that was the point I was making in that case. : / I wasn't suggesting that Helkrisian characters be allowed into that silly place in the clouds.
And I, nor none of my Helkrisian pcs have nothing to do with the disappearance of that lovable little gnome in the Icy Vale. *Glances left to right* ...Honestly.

Argh! *pokes iCal in his toolbar and sends a PM to Ritz*

Edit: With Vives2 in the works I never take these updates and redesigns for granted. Thanks Fictrix and everyone else who is hard at it!
