Whooo! Just had to drop a quick post here cause I'm all excited.
I Just bought tickets for the Police reunion tour in Oakland on June 13th...
The first two records I ever owned were Bussiness as Usual by Men at Work, and Synchronicity by The Police... and then they went and broke up before I was of concert going age.
Never thought I'd get to see them live some day... I'm pretty stoked!
Any other Police fans here? |

Well, I was a fan of the Police way, way back. I may have been of concert-going age when Synchronicity came out (if my mom drove me, anyway), though I don't think they ever made it anywhere near the backwater where I lived (err...and continue to live).
I also owned Synchronicity on vinyl (probably still do, somewhere).
On the topic of "First Two Albums I Ever Owned", mine are probably less auspicious, though no less deeply rooted in the Top 40: Asia:Asia and Survivor: Eye of the Tiger (I think). |

Oh yeah! I'm a huge fan of The Police. I used to own all of their albums on Vinyl.
My best friend and I used to rock out covering their tunes... he on drums, me on guitar. I think our favorite album was Regatta de Blanc though we could play everything on Outlandos.
*wipes a tear from his eye*
I used to have dreams of playing Driven to Tears on stage in dingey bars. But then driving the crowd wild with my mimicing of Andy's amazing solo. I had practiced that song so many times that I could see the exact fingering and timing in my dream.
As I obsessed as I am with their music, I don't think I'll be shelling out the money for the concert. I live in Oakland, so maybe I'll just hang around outside the venue and record it. :) |

I think the first two Vinyl records I bought on my own were Regatta de Blanc and Outlandos D'Amour. My mom was a great Sting fan in the 80's (I still like the Dream of the Blue Turtles album for nostalgic reasons) and I grew up with him, but it was me who bought all the Police stuff. I'm not sure if I'd want to see them live in concert today though... Sting has become a boring old fart, and this reunion tour.. well.. I think I'll wait for a DVD, but that one I will watch for certain. |

Heh... some of us are really showing our age.
...now I -know- some of you are at least as old as I am... and older.
That's awesome, BKatt! My first two albums were Synchroncity and uh...*clears throat* Footloose....

Awesome... if I could do more than one concert, I probably would. Wouldn't mind seeing them in L.A. with the Foo Fighters opening... but that, and everything else, is a bit far from us. But heck.. seeing how the concerts have been selling out in like, 15 minutes or so.. I think I'm alright just going to the one.
Oh, and by the way, if anyone is considering going to one of the shows (that havent gone on sale yet) and doesn't mind dropping an extra $100 to get tickets.. ThePoliceTour.com has pre-sale tickets for fan club members that you can get. Thats how I got mine. There is a limit of 4, but you can buy tickets a few days before the public sale. (the june 13th show doesn't go on sale to general public till monday) Since I'm going with the wife and two freinds of ours, I figgured $25 tacked on to the price of each ticket is a small matter if you consider that it means we actually -get- tickets.
I don't really know what their reasoning for the $100 membership fee is... a bit steep if you ask me... but split four ways... *shrugs*
oh, and Imperious... Footloose? *coughs*
;P

Nice...
Makes you wonder what ever happened to those old vinyl records... well, makes -me- wonder anyway. I have no idea where they went. My parents probably threw em out when I joined the Navy.
And yeah, I was 13 when Sychronicity came out, so I could have gone if my parents took me... but oh my cow, my parents were into country music. *bangs head on the wall trying to get the memories out* so no chance of that.
My best friend and I used to rock out covering their tunes... he on drums, me on guitar. I think our favorite album was Regatta de Blanc though we could play everything on Outlandos.

groovy! yeah, I picked up the bass about a year ago... or has it been two... *scratches head* well, anyway... the buddy of mine who gave me lessons encouraged me to practice with police songs.. started with simple ones like Walking on the Moon, and Roxanne... and worked into more difficult ones... Miss Gradenko, Sychronicity II...
Stings bass lines are usualy fun to play.. even the simple ones. Usually lots of room for the song to breath... and much more noticeable when you screw up. And when you try learning how to play them.. you notice little flourishes he throws in at times that my fingers simply refuse to reproduce (like the little turn around flourish he throws in on Shadows in the Rain that he redid on Dream of the Blue Turtles... also a nostalgic album for me as well, Casa)
and I've discovered that sometimes what sounds like a simple thing to play, really is more complex than you may have thought. for instance, Every Breath You Take sounds like a completely straighforward bass line throughout the song... except that on the chorus (bridge?) he's playing the note and its octave at the same time.. well, interchangeably.. every other pluck.. or so... I don't know if I'm explaining it properly since I don't know any of the proper musical terms, but... it's not easy to play. well
And anyone who can play bass -and- sing.. just boggles my mind. I cant for the life of me wrap my head around it.. strumming an acoustic guitar and singing, I can come close, cause you are usualy singing at the same tempo/rythm whatever, as you are playing... (though I really don't play the guitar.. so in that respect, it's pretty hideous) but getting my mouth and my hands to work completely independent from one annother... HA! Much respect to singing bass players.

Well, I don't know about boring old fart or not.. I never really followed his solo career a whole lot... but getting to see the Police back together for a concert of that great old material...? I'm down with that. I can't imagine I'll be dissapointed.
You scored big time BKatt!! get me a friggin' T-Shirt I'm Jealous!! Love the Police although they weren't one of my first 2 albums those were Depeche Mode: Speak and Spell and Duran Duran: Duran DUran :)
sweet! You know, at first I absolutely hated both Duran Duran and Depressed Mode... but it was a clique thing.. I hated it because the freaks listened to Depeche Mode, and the girls all swooned over Duran Duran. But eventually I started liking it because... well, it was good stuff. And both of those bands are still in my CD rotation to date. |

5 more days...
Hey Imperious, how was the Seattle show?
For anyone interested... I got a kick out of Stewart Coplands post on his forums.. about their first disaster gig in Vancouver. An enjoyable read.. he has a good writing style. (at least -I- like it)
Reading subsequent concert reviews on ThePoliceTour.com, it sounds like they are working out the kinks with every show, and starting to gel more, so maybe around the time I get to see them they will be in top form.. smoothed out all the rough edges by then, yet early enough in the tour to not be getting tired of it (Andy is 65 freekin years old, for cyring out loud)
can't wait...
And the day after the show, (we are staying overnight) we get to go out to Scoma's sea food restaraunt down at the warf in San Fan... their sautéed scallops are the BEST EVER! |

Wow. You'll be in the hood.
My friend, the drummer who I used to jam out police songs with, will be going to the Oakland show. The wife and I will be watching their kid.
So say hi for me. Should be fun. |

Does anyone else remember Dana Carvey's stand-up routine involving Sting? I remember it being quite funny and I just thought well since it's A post about the Police than People might appreciate the slight diversion from the main police topic.
Well I'm sorry, But I can't seem to be able to find the clip from the show that he did it in. Never fear for those interested party's I'm going to continue looking for it. If I find it, I'll post the link. |
