Help On Pancakes Syrup :) Posted: 31 May 2007 07:30 AM |
Hi mates, long time no see unfortunately for me, NWN is not an option atm, and with it vives. But here I am asking for your help.
I have a very special friend, who was born in US, she often speaks about that syrup you guys use in pancakes, and yes theres no such thing around here.
I made some research, and from what I could see, maple syrup is usually the best, am I wrong?
I just don't know what is the best around there, I found brands like... Lob Cabin, Rowse Maple Syrup, and Aunt Jemima, those were some I found and that I could import.
I wanted to make her a surprise, but to tell the truth, I have never even tried this kind of syrup so I ask you guys for some help. |
Why search around when the answer is within you...?

| Depends on if she's talking about the generic maple syrup type stuff that most in the U.S. eat, like Log Cabin or Aunt Jemima, or genuine maple syrup. Most syrups are flavored corn syrup; real maple syrup tastes pretty different and costs about twice the price. Amongst the popular ones, I don't have a favorite, seem the same to me. |

| You can't go wrong with Log Cabin or Aunt Jemima, if she's American she'll drink either out of the bottle :) |

Log cabin and Aunt Jemima are not maple syrup. They are artificial as Timik has said.
I have no idea about the other, although "maple" is in the title. I'd go for that and hope for the best. |

Like I said if she's an American she'll love it, there are few purists when it comes to syrup, the sales numbers prove it ;) |

*shakes head in disgust* Thats like saying, "Well wine in a box sales a lot. It must be good. Right?"
If you bought her this crap it would be a crime to society.

Some "Wine in a box" is pretty good Just as with screwtops (over the more traditional cork) it's actually better for the wine. |

I don't care if it is artificial or not, its all about the taste of it, and probably some kind of breakfast tradition, here in europe theres no tradition in eating pancakes and also no syrup, wichever it is. So it doesnt really matter if it is good for health or not, or if it is the real maple or not, I just want to make her a surprise with american pancake syrup LOL
I guess that Aunt Jamima will do the trick cuz I found some online shop in UK that has this one for sale, and buy it in US would probably bring me some troubles in the customs since it is a food product, wich requires inspection. |

I'm with you DSM. This syrup incident goes to show that the stereotypical image of the philistine American has been co-opted, adopted, and apparently naturalized in the UK.
They need to plant maple trees and lay off the SPAM.

I knew one of the New England folks would come through with contact for the real tree blood...
I've noticed that in the store genuine maple syrup seems to be required to be packaged in smaller, shapely glass jugs with dainty finger-loops on the neck...which I'm sure drives the price up in both manufacturing and shipping, but is probably required to instill a sense of perceived value.
Tastes pretty good though |

oh c'mon! Maybe it's because I grew up in South Africa, but when I came to the States, I was blown away by the fact that you could drive up to a restaurants WINDOW, and pick up food without even having to get out of your car!! And it didn't take long to realize that Tang tastes better than real orange juice, that fake grape flavor is better than real, and that even if it does cause cancer yellow dye #5 makes my Twinkies look GOOD! ;) The only thing that i didn't care for here in the U.S. was the Coke and the chocolate. You just cant beat real cane sugar. :)
EDIT: Ara some of the best winery's in Australia and South Africa (two of the best wine producing countries IMHO) are switching to screw top, and rubber corks, better wine for us!!! |

Well let me put it this way. Lets say you’re in Philly and you say to yourself "hey I feel like a sandwich with steak in it." You /could/ purchase one of the best tasting sandwiches ever concocted also known as the Philly cheese steak and bask in its wonderful orgasmic yummyness. Or go buy a cheese steak hotpocket. The mistake is almost at the same level as saying a face shaped bottle of burned sugar tastes the same as real maple syrup.

Re: Help On Pancakes Syrup :) Posted: 01 Jun 2007 01:10 AM |
There are two kinds of syrups us real Canadians use
Maple syrup (not maple like, or partially somewhat has a little bit in like) and Molasses. Yummy!
The stuff like Aunt Jemima is mostly high fructose corn syrup with flavourings. Great stuff if you wish to push yourself along the way to diabetes.

Re: Help On Pancakes Syrup :) Posted: 01 Jun 2007 03:30 AM |
I have to throw my vote in with Paul, DSM-IV, and Henesua... 100% pure maple syrup just can't be beat! I could care less about if it is better for you or whatever... it just TASTES about a thousand times better than that artificialy flavored corn syrup crap...
when we go out for breakfast, I don't ever order waffles or pancakes, because no one ever serves real maple syrup (except places like Cracker Barrel.. or I sometimes bring my own maple suyrup in a single serving bottle)
Johe, you are a sick man...
T'mok, I know what you mean about the dainty bottles... but personally I get my maple syrup in a gallon jug.. grade B, too.. (less refined, so it has a stronger maple flavor)
And like DSM-IV said... if you are doing this to impress her.. I can't believe she would be impressed by Aunt Jemima.. or Log Cabbin... that stuff is barely edible, in my book.
It would be like buying her a Whitman's sampler instead of some Godiva chocolates... you would only be shooting yourself in the foot!
Don't listen to Johe.. get her some REAL, 100% pure maple syrup!
[Edit] totally assuming it is a "she"... but even if it isn't, and it's just a friend... friends don't let friends eat low quality syrup! (just like friends don't let friends eat low quality chocolate) |

Re: Help On Pancakes Syrup :) Posted: 01 Jun 2007 04:06 AM |
I think you're all nuts, I don't like anything on my pancakes except for buttercream, or maybe a very nice warm fruit compote. I DO like real maple syrup, the stuff from back east, but it tastes like candy... so I don't eat it for breakfast, I have the little maple candies for desert if I'm really craving some.
I wouldn't eat this for breakfast. Tasty though.
I, however, am a firm believe in a good solid breakfast every morning consisting of a large amount of heavy carbs, and usually eat several large bowls of cold cereal or oatmeal. If I'm going to have pancakes, it's not to end my evening fast, it's for brunch. Sometimes, if I'm looking for that super sweet pancake fantasy that "log cabin" syrup seems to provide our general populace, I'd rather blend some really really expensive cream cheese, and slice up some sugar coated strawberries. |

Alright, I just assumed grade B was less refined than the Grade A Light Amber, Grade A Medium Amber, and Grade A Dark Amber... but it turns out it's simply a matter of what kind of sap the tree gives. Usualy it gets darker as the season gets later... but sometimes they get the dark stuff early, and sometimes they can still get the light stuff late.
*shrugs* Guess it's up to the trees
Here is the syrup we get. (only, this is the 32 oz.. where we get the half gallon. (yeah, turns out it's a half gallon, not a gallon ))
But look... you can even get it from Amazon.com

Alright now this is turning into an obsession sheesh! it's friggin' syrup, go with mrs butterworth, and if you act now they'll throw in a free box of Eggo frozen pancakes PACKED with yummy preservatives that are very good for you! For a mere 50 cents more you can get your pancakes with m&m's in 'em. Oh and don't forget the Tang...*thinks* hmmm that'd be a good catch phrase... :P |

</lurk>
I'll leave Tang to the boy sprouts...
But I have to confess having been raised on the cheap stuff (Mrs. Butterworths, Auntie J, Log Cabin) I did not take immediately to real maple syrup. I even tapped trees with some old dairy farmer when I was in scouting and I didn't like the taste of the real stuff. I have to think that each has its place. I have both in my refrigerator.
This redeemed real maple syrup for my unsophisticated palate: winter carnival in Quebec City with my college friends (I went to school in Maine), they poured boiled maple syrup onto a slab of ice and pulled it like taffy around a stick, and handed it to you steaming and kind of gooey to eat. Gods that was fantastic!

You're d@mn right it's an obsession! I'm that way with any food.. or drink.. I want it to actually taste good. :P
Pure, all natural, organic, full fat, REAL food, just tastes better than the over processed, artificialy flavored, low fat, genetically modified, bastardized crap that seems to be the norm for most people.
IMHO
Give me real sour cream, with all the fat... give me a well crafted microbrew, over that watered down horse piss like coors or budweiser... give me ripe juicy tomatoes from the local farmers market (or better yet, your own garden), instead of the mealy bland ones from the supermarket... give me dark, rich, flavorful chocolate, over hersheys.
And I'm not even a food-a-holic... Some times I can even forget to eat. But when I DO eat, I like it to taste good. I don't know how so many people can keep eating substandard junk. Three cheers for marketing... and gulibility. *slight sarcasm* |
