Vives II Suggestions: Factions

I just spent some time searching around for this topic, and the closest I came to seeing this discussed was Fenarisk's thread on PW's and Their Evolution in which it was only touched upon:

How will factions be handled amongst players? I mean actual RP factions, not necessarily NWN's technical term.

Saana was RPing with Fia today, discussing Fia's walk by the walls of Naillamne, and suddenly I was thinking "why are Naillamne wizards always hostile to every player character?" If a character actually could belong to Naillamne, shouldn't they be free from Naillamne hostility?

Just a thought of mine. I'm always getting these and inadvertently causing stress amongst the builders. Sorry.

So I guess this is a two fold question:
One) is it with the spirit of Vives to have players who belong to different IG guilds, factions, nations etc. I'm talking about organizations that are actually embedded in the world and not necessary the variety of guild that is only player supported. I am aware of Vives' "guild" policy. I suppose I am talking mostly about aspects of player background - ie. being Midoran as opposed to Clan Artio etc.... Although it would be nice to be able to join a group after your character was made. In essence allowing this to be a bit dynamic.

Two) is it possible to have NPC's scripted to treat PC's differently based upon what organizations, nations etc... they belong to? In Vives we have special stores, which I think are a nice touch. But NPC's in your home turf otherwise don't necessarily seem to "know" you. Although thinking about this presently, I suppose Midoran's do attack elves on site, right? Or is that only when a DM is on.... In anycase that is the sort of thing I am talking about - Midorans attacking Elves! I want to see that. I'd also like to have the option of playing someone from Naillamne and having friends there, even if every other NPC on the server attacked me on sight. Extreme cases these may be, but I hope at the end of this ramble you have an inkling of what I am rambling on about ... seemingly without end.... on and on... and... on.

Yes, NWN2 makes this very easy. PDW and I are all geeky-excited about the ability to use parameters with NWScript.

It is possible now in V1; but difficult. The most we have are gender/deity/race/class checks (and those are quite difficult to implement if you want to check for multiple combinations... very tricky to write a conversation for, because you can only check for one at a time - or have to write a brand new script and increase the object count).

The lack of "faction" oriented quests/conversations is more due to the immense effort required to implement them as static quests/conversations. Hence why we stick to basic things like restricted areas and shops (Latonei Oakhouse, Tel'Elena, etc). We would much rather spend effort making content which is accessible to as many PCs as possible, than setting up restricted areas all over the place.

NWN2 and the effort required to build things in NWN2 will make the amount of restricted areas virtually nil. As it should be. Even IG guilds/factions sometimes cause us problems. Cliques will form, or players will huddle together in their secret areas, making it impossible for anyone who might want to RP with them to find them.

V2 is already inherently set up to make it a lot easier to check a player's background. Subraces have been set up to be tied in with nationality (rather than being the demented DND definition of a subrace). If we wanted to get really granular, we could even set up History Feats that break this down even further (eg. Elf subrace, with History Feat of Ferein). However, I do not envision this happening in the initial release. Perhaps in later releases. If you do the maths, it's a lot of History Feats to implement. So not initially, but very likely in a future patch, once V2 is up and running.

We will have a lot of diversity in V2; but hopefully a lot less focus on factions, and a lot more on individual PCs and their unique stories. Less stories of "the gods did this" or "this nation did that" level (maybe even no stories of that level, in fact). More stories of "this player did this" (Scoopers refurbished his shovel; Willom talked to the sacred undead trout; Xaranthir built a portable hole) level. It's more fun that way for PCs and DMs, and more fair too.
