Not if it's bo-staff skills or computer hacking skills. |

It depends on what you think of as "doesn't matter"
:) |

A rank in a skill that can surpass the highest possible DC that can be implemented (I don't know if there is a cap on what the NW game engine will allow) |

She's dead, it helps the silent aspect.
Here we go. Adding "move silently" points to her can't help, since she doesn't autonomously move, and corpses are awful silent as it is.

Your question can be answered at NWNWiki. Most such questions can. I've seen contributions there from at least one of the Vives DMs too (PDW).
Ignoring RP-oriented skills like bluff, persuade, and intimidate (lore is an rp skill for Emma too...I really don't think in Vives you need a lore skill beyond 20 to identify magic items), there are a few skills that lose their benefit after a certain point:
Tumble: The DC to beat an attack of opportunity is 15. Ergot, you don't need a tumble score higher than that if that's your purpose for taking the skill. Tumble, however, also adds to your AC (+1 for every 5 ranks, not including ranks from a dexterity modifier).
Disable trap: If you're not a rogue, you can't disable traps with a DC higher than 35. Unless you're disarming traps in combat all the time, that argues for no more than 15 points in this.
Search: Same as with Disable Trap above. Only rogues can find traps with a DC higher than 35.
Set traps: The highest set DC is 65, meaning more than 45 points is gratuitous...but...do you have 2,000 hours available for playing Vives 1 to get 45 ranks in set traps?
UMD: I'd say seventy points (see my comment regarding set traps) is the maximum you'd ever need, but on Vives, its probably a lot less than that. We don't have too many +10 Unholy Avengers of Speed and Freedom kicking around.
A last, obvious comment is that your dexterity, intelligence, charisma, and racial bonuses will add to certain skills, meaning you should be taking less than the maximum useful ranks, too.
Also, the Disable trap/Set trap synergy bonuses should be taken into account. Having five ranks in disable traps means you get a +2 to your set trap rolls, and five ranks in set trap gives you +2 to your disable trap rolls.
It probably doesn't need to be said, but....
Craft armour, craft weapon, craft trap are nearly useless in Vives.
Cheers,

It probably doesn't need to be said, but....
Craft armour, craft weapon, craft trap are nearly useless in Vives.
The first one effects your chances on altering armour appearance. The more expensive something is the harder it is to work it and the more it costs to change it. Having some skill means you'll take less tries (in general) and so, save more money . The same is to be said for craft weapon. Both are completely vanity related.
The third however is far from useless.
That said, all skills are role playing skills: An acrobatic performer relies on tumble more then your average rogue would. A blind character will never stop working their listen skill. A good treasure hunter will learn new tricks for searching their entire life. A resourceful and learned ranger might study trap setting learning not just the placement, but the ins and outs of them - looking to find ways of placing traps to herd animals or monsters away from an area to make it safer for travelers. From the mechanical aspect of things there are certain limits the system places. Vives constantly pushes those limits, opens up new meanings to any skill. And we have a DM team that makes use of those new limits. Letting your role playing be limited by the numbers can easily keep you from experiencing all that there is to offer. The same can be said for the crafting system.
The opinions and views expressed herin are indepentantly held, and Vives is not responsible for any written, read, or implied meanings. Thank you. :)

There is no limit.
If you want to be the best at a skill in Vives, you need to play countless hours and max out said skill at every level up.

Re: Question about skills Posted: 23 Mar 2007 07:28 AM |
The clothes horses (whoreses?) have spoken!
Like Veran and Moriarty I've put points into craft armor w/ most of my characters early on, and squander time dying and altering armor... that's even on my application to play on the server (I thought it was just me!). There's probably plenty more. I know people home in on Talion (and probably once did w/ Daimon too) when they need "alterations" to their kit.
That said, I don't think the DC for changing armor appearance ever gets above 15. Or is that weapons...? Ach, easy to figure it out.
The rp skills question (bluff, intimidate, persuasion, etc.) has come up before on the forums and it seems like a matter of personal choice and character development. Some consider it a terrible waste, especially when some classes get so few skill points to begin with. I sure don't.
Moriarty, you said the craft trap skill was far from useless? How so? |
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about dying."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means lying in the ground with dirt on your face and holding your breath forever."

Hmm, that's probably best left unsaid. It's potentially abuseable. |
