Time away and returning culture"shock" for elven relatives
Posted: 20 Mar 2007 03:52 PM
Boy, Elves and Half-Elves will have a divine shock if they've been away for long and log back in after having logged out in what is now Midoran Territory. That, however was not my case recently, so I appreciate the DMs for being so kind as to take the time to go over this with me IG when I made a foolish decision after being away for too long.

SO, that said, let's get to my concern: If an elf/ half-elf logs into Midor right now, they will be killed by Midoran with a divine purging. It doesn't matter if there's NPCs nearby or not, it seems. To a person who hasn't been IG for a while that will come as a complete surprise, and possibly a high XP cost. If you wander into their camp (even justifying it as OOC) you'll get what you deserved for bashing trough a fortification, but if you "pop inside the walls", well, it could be a real unpleasant suprise welcome. --I can already see the DMs getting slammed with case after case of returning Player who's been out for a while, or logs in an elf they left in Midor before or during the visas 5-6 months ago. And the DMs probably do already get slammed with those.--

I'm assuming that the respawn in the Midoran Infirmary has been disabled: that would make for a very non-humorous ZAP-SPAWN loop! So, is there a way that returning PC-elves can avoid an instant penalty for returning to Vives after a time from having logged out in what are now Midoran Lands? Maybe elven PCs who log in "inside" Midor could be automatically "teleported" by some default script so that they log in "outside" Midoran territory? Maybe it's already been fixed, I don't know. Last night's folly was my fault due to impatience and lack of information, but I'd hate for innocents to suffer due to such a dramatic change.

THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS FOR ELVEN-TYPES THROUGH MIDORAN TERRITORY! My lesson learned folks is that IG means IG AND Role Playing, and if you think you can do anything IG OOC, it better be in the player's Lounge, otherwise contact a DM first or forget about it. That's in the rules and the essential information, and I know it too. I was just being impatient and was ill-informed. So once again: thanks for taking the time DMs, Dorian Alltos, and Bereil Yadashem; Vives is still my favorite place to play, and --in my opinion-- the BEST place to play so far.

Maybe it's a moot point. I'm sure there's a post I've missed since I've been away for so long. Even the regular players I've seen IG for the past 1-2 weeks have been mostly new. Anybody who wants to help me with my re-education is welcome to PM me or respond here. Anyways, officially now, Kalannar is in the Vale and should be able to find his way to the excavating event tonight! He's been "hermitting" for a long time now, so I can't wait to get back and game with you folks again!

K.I.

((PS: Thank you to "The Shadow", "The Ranger" and " : " (Possibly "Whisper"?) for their time taken to help me adjust to the situation, for hearing me out, and for the warp to The Icy Vale, where Kalannar has been according to my recent forum posts and the one to come. Sorry for any frustration, misunderstanding, and for valuable IG time lost, guys. You're a wonderful crew, and I don't mean to seem ungrateful. If I did, I'm sorry. Especially, I want to thank you for helping me to find the Post that tells us how to save Chat Logs IG. That will actually save Gb's of memory in tgf files that would have been used otherwise, and HOURS in posts copying dialog when I incorporate IG RP to forum posts in the future. Maybe that will compensate for the time I'll spend earning back lost XP! ;D ))

Firstly, the smite effect on the Plains will not kill in one hit if the character is at full health, or shouldn't, it isn't an instant death.

Secondly, by now most elves, loyal to Ferein at least, will have been avoiding Midor like the plague since well before the occurrence of recent events so the logging on of one inside Midor is unlikely. Also those places where death and a subsequent respawn meant arrival in Midor have in fact been changed, again a lot of them were altered before recent events so that issue is unlikely.

If it had been the case (which it wasn't in yours) that a player had logged on to say the Great Plains after a long absence and run into difficulty then obviously allowances would be made.

This wasn't the case in your instance, as we explained to you, which is why the answer you received was given.

ELVES!

Can a gnomish contraption REALLY save time, after all?
Posted: 21 Mar 2007 12:10 PM
So I tried the Game Chat Log (A very cool gnomish contraption, by the way,) And suffice it to say, I'm not sure how much of a time saver it will be for journals. I know, you can set your text to not comment on everything including damage to enemies, etc. . . I'drecommend you reduce command tracking (Right click on the talk window border) if you're hoping this will save time.

BUT:
Both log windows are together in the history, entered by time of occurance: confusing buzz.

"You have now entered a PvP/ non-PvP area". . . every transition.

Regenrating equipment? 1hp, 1hp, 1hp, 1hp, ad infinitum.

Every time you change equipment: more buzz.

Commands are redundant: "casting spell abc". . . "casts spell abc". . .

Talking to pets? Every commad in the guidance outline will be tracked.

The labels are distracting: we already know it's our chat log history, right? Date time may not be all that necessary, unless you'e making a legal documentation later.

You're the kind that likes to study your battles occasionally, like when you take on strange foes that you haven't before, and want to know what stats it is that's diseasing and killing you? THAT is going to be pages and pages of who-hit-who. (See redundancy above)

The log is a simple wordpad-type simple text file so there are no shortcuts to erase all the [chat history window] labels. . . this means you'll spend hours editing aything you had dreamed of putting into a forum post. . .

Maybe screenshots aren't such a bad idea, after all! Wink Ironically, I'll probably use it anyways (however not as cut/paste for posts): the few bytes are worth the added possibility of convenience later, forgotten names I want to dig out for journal logs, etc. I guess as with many inventions they dont work how you may have intended them to, however they develop strengths of their own with time.

Maybe if they found a way that the contraption track each type of history separate: exploration w/ dialog, Battle separate. . . even if the 2 windows were tracked in separate histories?

K.I.

PS,RE: midoran's will being done: Yup I stated below that I understand, I won't be pushing the issue. Wink Just being back I was having nightmarish imaginations of all the things that could go wrong with the new changes. Maybe I'll Blog/Post a rough copy and save it for a day before posting ideas in such circumstances. Sometimes more info comes out IG that explains things anyways.

Oh,and with the divine damage, he had recieved 130 hp the first time which was around or above the amount he had when he entered. On re-log he took the smiting first, then finally the magical-already-dead damage. All I saw was him fall, and then in the onscreen log (gnominsh contraption not installed yet at the time) showed magical damage last, so I couldn't track how much smiting damage was done on a fresh log. (I'm not really interested in doing it again to find ot how much either!) Let me correct what I said previously that Elves WILL be KILLED: there is a chance they MIGHT SURVIVE, especially at the higher levels.

It was emotionally healing to be a part fo the excavation that would bypass that whole situation that was so distressing. AND fun too. The Icy Vale and Divider Chain will be more accessible. Anyways, thanks again for the time and help. Especially for the warp later. Vives has changed so much due to war and the Atalan attacks, Kal has a lot of re-learning to do. (As do I.) ;)

Yes. The gnomes have a solution for everything and hence the creation of....

GREP

Using this function with a find and replace function in text documents renders GREP your best friend. That is what i use. I set up a grep to find all that [window chat log] and time date etc... nonsense, while hooking it up to a find/replace function. I replace that stuff with nothing, which essentially deletes the extraneous text.

BBedit is a really good text edit software, that has grep find and replace built in - and has a functional free verion. Unfortunately it is Mac only. Anyone have a similar bit of software for ... you know those beige boxes the rest of you use. And if you are into Unix command line... Grep is built in. You just need a little shell script.

I don't have my GREP expression handy at the moment, but i am sure there are enough gnomes to help you out here.

Famous last words:

Vulpina> Hey!! IRC didn't boot m.....
